Neuro-Brucellosis In Children, Mohammed S. Bessisso, Mahmoud F. Elsaid, Sittina S. E. Elshazli, Hatim M. Abdelrahman, Mariam G. Alali, Ali R. Ali, Hamad M. Aljaber
Neurosciences
Brucellosis is an infection caused by gram negative cocobacilli (Brucellae). Presentation is usually non-specific and diagnosis depends on high index of suspicion. Nervous system involvement in children is rare as only 47 cases were reported until 1998. We are reporting two patients with neurobrucellosis. The first case was an 8-year-old boy who presented with papillodeoma, and neck stiffness of one month duration. Cerebrospinal fluid pressure was 360mm/water, protein 0.63gm/dl, and cerebrospinal fluid sugar/serum sugar 0.2/4.7mmol. Brucella titer was high in serum and cerebrospinal fluid. The second case was a 3-year-old girl with congenital hydrocephalus, with history of fever, loss of …
Re-Thinking The Summer Drenching Program, Brown Besier
Re-Thinking The Summer Drenching Program, Brown Besier
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
The summer drenching program has provided highly effective sheep worm control in Western Australia for many years - but recent research challenges its long term sustainability.
Trial results suggest that in large parts of the State, summer drenching is the main factor leading to the development of drench resistant worms. Alternative programs less likely to lead to drench resistance will require greater monitoring of worm burdens and panning pasture moves.
The Use Of Placebos In Clinical Trials: Responsible Research Or Unethical Practice?, Sharona Hoffman
The Use Of Placebos In Clinical Trials: Responsible Research Or Unethical Practice?, Sharona Hoffman
Faculty Publications
Developments in medical research have been occurring at a rapidly increasing rate during the past two decades. Expanding budgets, augmented computer capabilities, and new research tools have all dramatically enhanced research technology. Accompanying the proliferation of medical research are increasing concerns about research risks. This article focuses on placebo-controlled clinical trials. The use of placebos enables clinical investigators to compare results from subjects taking an experimental intervention to results from a group that is receiving an inactive substance, such as a sugar pill, in order to determine the efficacy of the new medication. In recent years, some surgeons have also …

An Analysis Of Anemia And Child Mortality, B.J. Brabin, Zul Premji, F. Verhoeff
An Analysis Of Anemia And Child Mortality, B.J. Brabin, Zul Premji, F. Verhoeff
Pathology, East Africa
The relationship of anemia as a risk factor for child mortality was analyzed by using cross-sectional, longitudinal and case-control studies, and randomized trials. Five methods of estimation were adopted: 1) the proportion of child deaths attributable to anemia; 2) the proportion of anemic children who die in hospital studies; 3) the population-attributable risk of child mortality due to anemia; 4) survival analyses of mortality in anemic children; and 5) cause-specific anemia-related child mortality. Most of the data available were hospital based. For children aged 0-5 y the percentage of deaths due to anemia was comparable for reports from highly malarious …

Freedom Fading: On Dementia, Best Interests, And Public Safety, Bruce Jennings
Freedom Fading: On Dementia, Best Interests, And Public Safety, Bruce Jennings
Georgia Law Review
Having Alzheimer's Disease does not make a person evil, but it does sometimes cause behavior that poses a danger to the person with dementia or to others. On what grounds can we justify overriding and restricting the liberty of a person with dementia? How far should such restrictions go? Who should authorize them and who should carry them out, and under what theory? Given that all behavior carries some degree of risk, what level of risk is acceptable? What should society tolerate as a part of the back- ground conditions within which most people conduct their lives? To what level …

In this report, placement of Rickettsia felis in the spotted fever group (SFG) rather than the typhus group (TG) of Rickettsia is proposed. The organism, which was first observed in cat fleas (Ctenocephalides felis) by electron microscopy, has not yet been reported to have been cultivated reproducibly, thereby limiting the standard rickettsial typing by serological means. To overcome this challenge, several genes were selected as targets to be utilized for the classification of R. felis. DNA from cat fleas naturally infected with R. felis was amplified by PCR utilizing primer sets specific for the 190 kDa surface antigen (rOmpA) and …
The Surveillance Of T-Lymphocytes In The Human Blood Stream, Ivan Temesvari
The Surveillance Of T-Lymphocytes In The Human Blood Stream, Ivan Temesvari
Masters Theses
T-Lymphocytes (T-cells), one of the many different lymphocytes, are the precursors of disease detection. Their primary purpose is to maintain a healthy immune system. They use the blood vasculature (blood stream) and lymphatic system to circulate throughout the body. Study of a T-cells journey throughout the human blood stream is useful to understand how they can detect disease, such as cancer, in an efficient and effective manner. T-cells are to be thought of as the good cells in our body searching to destroy the bad cells (cancer/infectious cells). The thymus lies in the anterior mediastinum, which is directly behind the …

A Review Of The Process Of Accessing Services For Children With Special Health Care Needs In North Dakota, Jana Schmidt
A Review Of The Process Of Accessing Services For Children With Special Health Care Needs In North Dakota, Jana Schmidt
Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects
It has been a concern of the Family Advisory Council of Children's Special Health Services, Bismarck, North Dakota, that many families experienced difficulties when trying to access information for medical, financial, educational, and family services for their children with special health care needs. The family members on this advisory board found the process of accessing services confusing and time consuming, and indicated that families were also unclear as to where to begin the process. An abundance of information provided at the time of their child's diagnosis made it difficult for families to make informed decisions about the most important and …
Cannabinoids And The Immune System, Thomas W. Klein, Catherine A. Newton, Herman Friedman
Cannabinoids And The Immune System, Thomas W. Klein, Catherine A. Newton, Herman Friedman
Molecular Medicine Faculty Publications
The effect of cannabimimetic agents on the function of immune cells such as T and B lymphocytes, natural killer cells and macrophages has been extensively studied over the past several decades using human and animal paradigms involving whole animal models as well as tissue culture systems. From this work, it can be concluded that these drugs have subtle yet complex effects on immune cell function and that some of the drug activity is mediated by cannabinoid receptors expressed on the various immune cell subtypes. However, the overall role of the cannabinoid system of receptors and ligands in human health and …

OBJECTIVE: Toxoplasma gondii is an an obligate intracellular protozoan parasite that causes toxoplasmosis. The infection is worldwide, particularly in warm and moist climates. Few studies have been conducted on the prevalence of subclinical or overt disease in Saudi Arabia. No population-based study was conducted or the seroprevalence of toxoplasmosis in humans in Saudi Arabia and this initiated the present study. The present study aimed at studying seroprevalence of Toxoplasma IgG and IgM antibodies in sera from 5 areas in the Eastern Region of Saudi Arabia. METHODS: A population based epidemiological approach, prevalence according to lifestyle (urban or rural), gender (male …
