The Role Of Microsimulation In Longitudinal Data Analysis, Douglas A. Wolf Feb 2001

The Role Of Microsimulation In Longitudinal Data Analysis, Douglas A. Wolf

Center for Policy Research

The term “microsimulation” has been linked to a range of tools and techniques that are finding growing use in empirical social science applications. This paper considers one such area, namely the potential for microsimulation to serve the needs of the data analyst, in contrast to the more common use of microsimulation by the model user. Furthermore, the focus is on longitudinal rather than cross-sectional data analysis. The paper identifies several types of longitudinal data modeling approaches in which microsimulation is particularly relevant, suggesting algorithms with which to conduct such microsimulations. Microsimulation can be used to extend the range of inferences …

Tidal Asymmetry In An Estuarine Pycnocline 2. Transport, David A. Jay, Cynthia N. Cudaback Feb 2001

Tidal Asymmetry In An Estuarine Pycnocline 2. Transport, David A. Jay, Cynthia N. Cudaback

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Flood currents in shallow estuaries are driven by an along-channel barotropic and baroclinic pressure gradient that increases monotonically toward the bottom, while friction retards near-bottom currents. Therefore, in many estuaries there is a middepth maximum in flood currents. We explore this phenomenon using a simple three-layer model in which each layer has vertically uniform currents and constant density. In this model the middle layer is of intermediate density and grows by shear-induced entrainment from the other two layers. This very simple model produces a middepth maximum in flood currents and simulates observed currents in the Columbia River entrance channel within …

Single Rabbit Stomach Smooth Muscle Cell Myosin Heavy Chain Smb Expression And Shortening Velocity, Thomas J. Eddinger, Daniel P. Meer Feb 2001

Single Rabbit Stomach Smooth Muscle Cell Myosin Heavy Chain Smb Expression And Shortening Velocity, Thomas J. Eddinger, Daniel P. Meer

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

Isolated single smooth muscle cells (SMCs) from different regions of the rabbit stomach were used to determine a possible correlation between unloaded shortening velocity and smooth muscle (SM) myosin heavy chain (MHC) S1 head isoform composition (SMA, no head insert; SMB, with head insert). α-Toxin-permeabilized isolated single cells were maximally activated to measure unloaded shortening velocity and subsequently used in an RT-PCR reaction to determine the SMA/SMB content of the same cell. SM MHC SMA and SMB isoforms are uniquely distributed in the stomach with cells from the fundic region expressing little SMB (38.1 ± 7.3% SMB; n = 16); …

The New Psychological Contract: Implications Of The Changing Workplace For Labor And Employment Law, Katherine V.W. Stone Feb 2001

The New Psychological Contract: Implications Of The Changing Workplace For Labor And Employment Law, Katherine V.W. Stone

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

In this article, Professor Stone describes the profound changes that are occurring in the employment relationship in the United States. Firms are dismantling their internal labor markets and abandoning their implicit promises of orderly promotion and long-term job security. No longer is employment centered on a single, primary employer. Instead, employees operate in a boundaryless workplace in which they expect to move frequently between firms, and between divisions within firms, throughout their working lives. At the same time, employers and employees have a new understanding of their mutual obligations, a new psychological contract, in which expectations of job security and …

Dose-Effect Relations In Simulated Psychotherapy As Measured By The Outcome Questionnaire-45.11, Brian J. Whitehall Feb 2001

Dose-Effect Relations In Simulated Psychotherapy As Measured By The Outcome Questionnaire-45.11, Brian J. Whitehall

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

Outcome assessment has been used to evaluate the length of treatment needed and has been disputed for some time. Changes within both mental health and health insurance companies have contributed to a trend toward time-limited therapy and the optimal number of sessions has become a central issue. This study sought to extend research in the area of treatment outcome. Specifically. it examined the efficacy of psychotherapy after five and ten sessions on the subjective well-being of university students. Three hypotheses were tested in th.is study: (1) Subjective Well-Being scores (as measured by the Outcome Questionnaire-45. l l) for the treatment …

Simulations Of Ice And Liquid Water Over A Range Of Temperatures Using The Fluctuating Charge Model, Steven W. Rick Feb 2001

Simulations Of Ice And Liquid Water Over A Range Of Temperatures Using The Fluctuating Charge Model, Steven W. Rick

Chemistry Faculty Publications

The temperature dependence of the thermodynamic and dynamical properties of liquid water using the polarizable fluctuating charge (FQ) model is presented. The properties of ice Ih, both for a perfect lattice with no thermal disorder and at a temperature of 273 K, are also presented. In contrast to nonpolarizable models, the FQ model has a density maximum of water near 277 K. For ice, the model has a dipole moment of the perfect lattice of 3.05 Debye, in good agreement with a recent induction model calculation. The simulations at 273 K and the correct density find that thermal motion decreases …
