State-To-State Migration During 1975–80 And 1985–90: An Analysis By Age, Race, Sex, And Education, Joseph Augustine Smith-Buani

Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation uses 1980 and 1990 United States census and administrative data to analyze interstate migration during 1975-80 and 1985-90, and to assess the effects of several determinants on state-to-state migration by age, race, sex, and education. Descriptions are presented of migration rates, migration stream volumes and efficiency ratios, indexes of differential migration, and regional fixed-effects regression models using theories, techniques, and methodologies from recent migration literature.

Regression analysis shows race, education, age, and sex having independent effects on interstate migration rates. A polytomous logistic regression model is used to investigate how selected variables affect the probability of state-to-state migration …

Obituary Of Frances W. Peabody (Frannie Peabody), 98, Of Portland.

Maine News Index – Portland Press Herald

Full Newspaper Article Attached as PDF.

Frannie Peabody was born in 1903, but her life as an AIDS activist began in 1983 when her grandson was diagnosed with the disease. At that time AIDS was still considered a marginal disease that only affected people at the fringes of “respectable society.” Mrs. Peabody worked passionately to bring AIDS into the mainstream and made us see that this devastating disease can touch any life, as it had touched hers so deeply. She will long be remembered as a founder of the Peabody House hospice and The AIDS Project, dual organizations that now …

Volunteer Motivations For College Students: Reasons For Initial And Continued Involvement In Voluntary Community Service Organizations, Tanya K. Refshauge

Theses and Graduate Projects

This descriptive study explores the motivations of college students for initial and continued involvement in community service organizations. Subjects held leadership positions in a specific collegiate volunteer organization and responded to a survey designed to elicit motivations for initial and continued involvement with voluntary service organizations. The survey also collected demographic characteristics of the sample population. Results indicate altruistic motivations are most important followed closely by egoistic motivations. This study distinguished between "ego affiliation motives" and "ego enrichment motives" and found them both to be important factors. No significant difference was shown between initial and continued motivations, although a change …

Mammy: From Pancakes To Grenades, Nichol Michelina Pagano

Theses & Honors Papers

From an image draped in calico and flipping pancakes to a figure wearing pearls and throwing hand grenades, Mammy exists as part of America's cultural heritage since the beginning of the nineteenth century. The Mammy character evolved in American iconography from the subservient kitchen Aunt Jemima to a modem aggressive woman ready for military combat. Early depictions of Mammy show her as being very humble, plain in dress and appearance, and subservient to her white masters . In From Mammy to Miss America and Beyond, Sue Jewell states, "[Mammy] is portrayed as an obese African-American woman, of dark complexion, with …
