Homeward (Chapter 6 Of The Book Between Gay And Straight: Understanding Friendship Across Sexual Orientation), Lisa M. Tillmann Ph.D. Jan 2001

Homeward (Chapter 6 Of The Book Between Gay And Straight: Understanding Friendship Across Sexual Orientation), Lisa M. Tillmann Ph.D.

Faculty Publications

“Homeward” is Chapter 6 of the book Between Gay and Straight: Understanding Friendship Across Sexual Orientation (AltaMira Press, 2001). Here I present events that took place during the spring 1997 semester and that summer. An issue that comes to the forefront is the binary (gay-straight) construction of sexual orientation and identity. I ask what it means to say, “I’m straight,” or “I’m gay,” and what options and experiences such a claim opens up and closes off. By exploring an attraction between myself and one of my participants, I question the popular wisdom that friendships between straight women and gay men …

Tales From The (Softball) Field (Chapter 3 Of The Book Between Gay And Straight: Understanding Friendship Across Sexual Orientation), Lisa M. Tillmann Ph.D.

Faculty Publications

“Tales from the (Softball) Field” is chapter 3 of the book Between Gay and Straight: Understanding Friendship Across Sexual Orientation (AltaMira Press, 2001). “Tales” marks the beginning of my academic journey into this community. It’s the fall of 1995, and I’m taking a graduate class on qualitative methods. Unexpectedly, the softball field emerges as a fieldwork site. As I become immersed in team members’ lives and stories, I begin exploring how to “work the hyphen” (Fine, 1994) between gay and straight, to practice research (and friendship) with and for my friends/participants.

Attorney-Client Confidentiality And The Assessment Of Claimants Who Allege Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, Robert H. Aronson, Lonnie Rosenwald, Gerald M. Rosen Jan 2001

Attorney-Client Confidentiality And The Assessment Of Claimants Who Allege Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, Robert H. Aronson, Lonnie Rosenwald, Gerald M. Rosen

Articles

Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) was first recognized by the American Psychiatric Association in 1980. A PTSD diagnosis requires an individual or individual's loved ones to have experienced a traumatic event that was a threat to life or physical integrity and caused the individual to react to the incident with a specific number of avoidance, reexperiencing, and hyper-arousal symptoms. Obtaining a PTSD diagnosis can be of great value to a personal-injury plaintiff who claims damages due to a traumatic event. Further, if the traumatic event is unquestioned and the individual reports the classic symptoms, a PTSD diagnosis is relatively easy to …

The Mental Health Provider Privilege In The Wake Of Jaffe V. Redmond, Robert H. Aronson Jan 2001

The Mental Health Provider Privilege In The Wake Of Jaffe V. Redmond, Robert H. Aronson

Articles

Many of the revisions to article V of the Uniform Rules of Evidence involved stylistic, nonsubstantive changes. In particular, all language was made gender neutral. The most substantial revision was to Rule 503, formerly titled "Physician and Psychotherapist-Patient Privilege." This revision broadened the scope of the privilege to include a general "mental health provider" privilege, in accord with the trend in the states and the U.S. Supreme Court's decision in Jaffee v. Redmond. In Jaffee, the Court recognized for the first time a federal psychotherapist-patient privilege and extended the privilege to confidential communications with a licensed social worker in …

Hot Topic: Grief In The Workplace, Penny A. Hazelton Jan 2001

Hot Topic: Grief In The Workplace, Penny A. Hazelton

Articles

In our death-denying culture, grief is a personal thing not shared with others. I believe that the events of September 11 have made us recognize that we cannot leave grief at the doorstep of our workplaces. Many of us were at work when the stories broke that day. Whether our grief is caused by the acts of terrorism or has a more personal context, we cannot deny that the symptoms of grief create stresses that affect people and, therefore, the work in our libraries.

Fighting The Probate Mafia: A Dissection Of The Probate Exception To Federal Court Jurisdiction, Peter Nicolas Jan 2001

Fighting The Probate Mafia: A Dissection Of The Probate Exception To Federal Court Jurisdiction, Peter Nicolas

Articles

Despite the complexity and confusion surrounding the probate exception to federal court jurisdiction-or perhaps because of it-it has been given scant attention in the literature. This Article seeks to fill the gap. Part II of this Article sets forth the current application of the probate exception in the lower federal courts. Part III of this Article examines the statutory and constitutional constraints on the federal courts' exercise of subject matter jurisdiction over probate and probate related matters. Part III concludes that the probate exception is a mere gloss on the statutory grants of subject matter jurisdiction to the federal courts …

State Escheat Statutes And Possible Treatment Of Stored Value, Electronic Currency, And Other New Payment Mechanisms, Anita Ramasastry Jan 2001

State Escheat Statutes And Possible Treatment Of Stored Value, Electronic Currency, And Other New Payment Mechanisms, Anita Ramasastry

Articles

Unclaimed property and escheatment is governed primarily by state statutory schemes. State unclaimed property statues require that after a specified period of time, unclaimed and abandoned property escheats to the states. The owner of the property may request return of the property upon proof of his or her ownership. Although several states have adopted the Uniform Unclaimed Property Act as their state escheatment statute,' there are variations in these state statutes. Nonetheless, all state statutes deal with traveler's checks and money orders; most also address gift certificates. Notably absent in all of the state statutes, with the exception of North …

The Durable Power Of Attorney's Place In The Family Of Fiduciary Relationships, Karen E. Boxx Jan 2001

The Durable Power Of Attorney's Place In The Family Of Fiduciary Relationships, Karen E. Boxx

Articles

The durable power of attorney is a deceptively simple document that allows one person to handle the affairs of an incapacitated person without court supervision. It is merely an agency relationship, established by a written document, that continues during the principal's incapacity. The durable power of attorney has been in widespread use only for about twenty-five years. It is very easy to draft, and its use escapes most court proceedings or even much need for legal assistance.

The durable power of attorney has therefore kept a low profile until now, and any attention it is now receiving focuses primarily on …

The Miccosukee Indians And Environmental Law: A Confederacy Of Hope, William H. Rodgers, Jr. Jan 2001

The Miccosukee Indians And Environmental Law: A Confederacy Of Hope, William H. Rodgers, Jr.

Articles

Two legal orphans have found each other. The older one is "Indian Law," a confused, embarrassing, and twisted body of legal rules that "explain" the relationships between the United States and its native peoples. The newer one is "Environmental Law," a complex and jumbled stew of cases and statutes that "prescribe" proper behavior between modern Americans and the natural world.

Both these children of the law are suspected of subversion—the one is tainted by advocates of separate sovereignties, the other by critics of the American way of life. For Native Americans and environmentalists, their recent legal merger is a confederacy …

Variation In Lipophorin Titres During Development In Solitarious And Gregarious Schistocerca Gregaria (Forskàl) (Orthoptera: Acrididae), D. O. Ogoyi, E. O. Osir

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

The levels of lipophorin, the principal insect haemolymph lipoprotein, were estimated during the development of solitary and gregarious phases of Schistocerca gregaria using single radial immunodiffusion. In the gregarious phase, lipophorin titres ranged from 6.69 ±0.57 mg/ml in the 3rd nymphal instar to 14.42 ±2.04 mg/ml in mature adults. The titres in the solitary phase were 3.33 ± 0.59 mg/ml in the 3rd nymphal instar and 8.44 + 0.67 mg/ml in mature adults. Peak lipophorin titres occurred in mature adults (14.42 ±2.04 mg/ml) and 5th nymphal instar (8.75 ±0.25 mg/ml) for gregarious and solitary locusts, respectively. Gregarious locusts had significantly …

Farmers’ Perceptions Of Importance, Control Methods And Natural Enemies Of Maize Stemborers At The Kenya Coast, M. J. Bonhof, A. Van Huis, F. G. Kiros, N. Dlbogo

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

A survey among 240 resource-poor farmers at the Kenya coast indicated that insect pests were considered to be the main production constraint. Over 70% of respondents mentioned stemborers to be the most important insect pest. Unlike the eggs and adults, stemborer larvae and pupae were frequently seen by farmers. Alternative gramineous host plants for pests were common near maize fields and were often not destroyed until after the first rains. Nearly all farmers left dry stems and stubble in the field after harvest. Farmers knew of many methods for controlling stemborers, but only 32 and 56% of farmers in Kilifi …

Distribution And Abundance, In Maize And Sorghum, Of Lepidopteran Stemborers And Associated Indigenous Parasitoids In Zanzibar, E. I. Nlyibigira, Z. S. Abdallah, W. A. Overholt

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Studies to determine the relative abundance and distribution of stemborer species and their associated parasitoids in maize and sorghum were carried out during the 1995-1996 and 19992000 cropping seasons on Unguja and Pemba, the two main islands of Zanzibar. Three stemborer species were found on both islands in maize and sorghum, with the exotic species Chilo partellns (Swinhoe) (Crambidae) being the most abundant and widely distributed species, accounting for 75.3 % of stemborer attack. It was followed by Sesamia calamistis Hampson (Noctuidae) and C/i. oriclialcociliellus Strand (Crambidae). Stemborer abundance was significantly higher in Pemba (1.47 ± 0.20) than Unguja (0.85 …

Biosystematics Of The Psyttalia Concolor Species Complex (Hymenoptera: Braconidae: Opiinae): The Identity Of Populations Attacking Ceratitis Capitata (Diptera: Tephritidae) In Coffee In Kenya, S. W. Kimani-Njogu, M. K. Trostle, R. A. Wharton, J. B. Woolley, A. Raspi

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

The identity of a species of Psyttalia, a parasitoid of tephritid fruit flies in Kenya, was investigated. Individuals reared from coffee infested with Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann) (Medfly) and two other tephritid species in Kenya were compared with individuals of Psyttalia concolor (Szépligeti) from a laboratory culture in Italy used in augmentative biological control of olive fly, Bactrocera oleae (Gmelin). Reciprocal crosses showed full compatibility, with production of viable female offspring. A preliminary morphometric analysis demonstrated that most individuals originating from Italy could be separated from most of those from Kenya based largely on differences in overall size.

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

This study focused on the suitability of four species of cereal stem borers for the development of five geographic populations of Cotesia sesamiae (Cameron). C. sesamiae, an indigenous larval parasitoid of gramineous stem borers, is widespread in Africa. Four stem borers, Chilo partellus (Swinhoe), Chilo orichalcociliellus Strand (Lepidoptera: Crambidae), Busseola fusca Fuller, and Sesamia calamistis Hampson (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), were offered to C. sesamiae for oviposition. Parasitoid individuals originated from five locations in Kenya. Biological parameters such as developmental time, percentage parasitism, progeny production, mortality of immature parasitoids, and proportion of female progeny were compared across host species. The two populations …

Greenhouse Trials Of New Bacillus Thuringiensis Isolates For Control Of Chilo Partellus Larvae In Sorghum, Michael Brownbridge Jan 2001

Greenhouse Trials Of New Bacillus Thuringiensis Isolates For Control Of Chilo Partellus Larvae In Sorghum, Michael Brownbridge

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Eight new Bacillus thuringiensis Berliner (Bt) isolates originally recovered from different source materials and geographic locations in Kenya were tested against Chilo partellus (Swinhoe) on sorghum grown in a greenhouse. All isolates had been demonstrated previously to be toxic to this pest. Bt strains were cultured in a liquid growth medium and preserved as powders for experimental application. Three-week-old sorghum plants (4-6 leaves) were artificially infested with 20 neonate C. partellus and sprayed 24 h later with Bt suspensions. Non-infested sorghum and infested non-treated sorghum served as the comparative checks within each experimental trial. Plant development and dead-heart formation were …

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Surveys were conducted to determine the species composition of stemborers and their natural enemies in maize and sorghum in 1999 and 2000 in eastern, northern, southern and western Ethiopia. The six species of stemborers found attacking maize and sorghum were Cltilp partellus (Swinhoe) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae), Busseolafiisca Fuller, Sesamia calamistis Hampson (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), S. nonagrioides botanephaga Tarns and Bowden (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), Rhynchaenus niger (Horn) (Coleoptera: Rhynchophoridae) and Pissodes dubious (Stroöm) (Coleoptera: Rhynchophoridae). Twenty species of primary parasitoids of eggs, larvae and pupae of Ch. partellus, B. fusca and S. calamistis were recorded. Other natural enemies, including predators, fungi and nematodes, were …

Lucas Rosa V. Park West Bank And Trust Company, Katherine M. Franke Jan 2001

Lucas Rosa V. Park West Bank And Trust Company, Katherine M. Franke

Faculty Scholarship

In July of 1998 something rather mundane happened: Lucas Rosa walked into Park West Bank in Holyoke, Massachusetts and asked for a loan application. Since it was a warm summer day, and because she wanted to look credit-worthy, Rosa wore a blousey top over stockings. Suddenly, the mundane transformed into the exceptional: When asked for some identification, Rosa was told that no application would be forthcoming until and unless she went home, changed her clothes and returned attired in more traditionally masculine/male clothing. Rosa, a biological male who identifies herself as female was, it seems, denied a loan application on …

Ecological Studies On Cucumber (Cucumis Sativus L.) Pest Spectrum, Yield Loss Assessment And Potential For Use Of Neem Products In Kenya, Tom Charles Mboya Matoka Jan 2001

Ecological Studies On Cucumber (Cucumis Sativus L.) Pest Spectrum, Yield Loss Assessment And Potential For Use Of Neem Products In Kenya, Tom Charles Mboya Matoka

All Master’s Theses

Cucurbit vegetable crops, especially cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) offer a good potential for urban and export marketing in Kenya. The crop also shows a promise for commercial production in Eastern African while pests are reckoned as one of the major production constraints. There is very little published information on the range and relative importance of different pests on the crop and appropriate control measures in the region. Exploratory studies conducted from November 1998 to August 2000 at KISE, Nairobi and November 1998 to March 1999 at Kibwezi, Eastern province in Kenya brought to focus arthropods (pests and natural enemies) associated …

The analysis reveals that the Ampang landfill leachate during its active life had high contents of sodium, potassium, chloride and ferum, with concentrations of 687 ppm, 785 ppm, 2500 ppm and 45 ppm respectively. Generally and as expected, the leachate collected before the landfiII closure was found to be more concentrated and contains more …

Epstein-Barr Virus Serology In The Diagnosis Of Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma From Sarawak, Madeline Wong Mei Fong Jan 2001

Epstein-Barr Virus Serology In The Diagnosis Of Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma From Sarawak, Madeline Wong Mei Fong

Student Works (2000-2009)

The Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is closely associated with nasopharyngcal carcinoma (NPC). The role(s) of EBV in NPC remains unclear but antibodies to two EBV proteins namely the viral capsid antigen (VCA) and early antigen (EA), are clinically useful diagnostic markers of NPC. The NPC scenario in Malaysia has been based on studies done on West Malaysian patients but not much has been described for NPC in Sarawak, East Malaysia. In this study, 164 NPC sera from newly histologically confirmed NPC patients were collected from the Radiotherapy Unit of Kuching General Hospital, Sarawak prior to radiotherapy. One hundred and forty seven …
