Home And Classroom Learning Environment Correlates Of Academic Self -Efficacy In Middle School Mathematics., Thaddeus Theodore Claiborne Jan 2001

Home And Classroom Learning Environment Correlates Of Academic Self -Efficacy In Middle School Mathematics., Thaddeus Theodore Claiborne

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study investigated the relationship between home and classroom learning environment characteristics and middle school students' self-efficacy beliefs about mathematics. Specifically, the study examined linkages between sources of efficacy in the home and classroom learning environments and the strength of students' self-efficacy beliefs in mathematics. Social cognitive theory includes self-efficacy beliefs as a major source of human agency and functioning (Bandura, 1997). Enactive mastery experiences, vicarious learning (modeling), verbal persuasion, and physiological/affective states (emotional arousal) are four sources of human efficacy. While numerous studies have been completed linking self-efficacy to learning and achievement (Pajares, 1996b), no studies within schools were …

Theatre At Caffe Cino: The Aesthetics And Politics Of Revolt, 1958--1968., Wendell Corbin Stone Jan 2001

Theatre At Caffe Cino: The Aesthetics And Politics Of Revolt, 1958--1968., Wendell Corbin Stone

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Often considered the first off-off-Broadway theatre, Caffe Cino opened in December 1958 on a quiet street in New York's Greenwich Village. As proprietor Joseph Cino later explained, his goal was to provide a venue in which friends could enjoy coffee, conversation, and artistic events (including lectures, art displays, poetry readings, and play readings). Because of their popularity, the play readings quickly developed into fully-staged performances and supplanted all other artistic endeavors. By the early 1960s, the Caffe offered a demanding production schedule, with performances at 9:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m. every day and additional performances at 1:00 a.m. on the …

Remediation Of An Oil Contaminated Wetland And The Effects Of Crude Oil And Brine On Two-Year Old Loblolly Pine (Pinus Taeda) Seedlings., Dean Anthony Goodin Jan 2001

Remediation Of An Oil Contaminated Wetland And The Effects Of Crude Oil And Brine On Two-Year Old Loblolly Pine (Pinus Taeda) Seedlings., Dean Anthony Goodin

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The goal of this project is to introduce a successful remediation and restoration plan for a wetland and pine forest contaminated by an oil well blowout. A field study focused on the effectiveness of ammoniated bagasse (ABG) to enhance the bioremediation of the contaminated wetland. A comprehensive soil and vegetation greenhouse study investigated the effects of oil and brine on loblolly pine tree seedlings and the effectiveness of ABG to remove and remediate oil contaminated forest soils. The most effective, ecologically sound, and economical plan to remove the oil from the wetland was to burn the area. Once the area …

(3) Inner littoral of Carmen Island (ILCI) with strong marine influence, high transparency and extensive seagrass meadows. (4) Carmen inlet (Estero Pargo, ESP) with a net outflow of water and high turbidity. (5) Puerto Real inlet (PR) with a net inflow of waters, high transparency and seagrasses. During a 15-month sampling, 13,691 individuals of 79 different species were collected …

Development And Characterization Of Velocity Workspaces For The Human Knee., John Eric Fuller Jan 2001

Development And Characterization Of Velocity Workspaces For The Human Knee., John Eric Fuller

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The knee joint is the most complex joint in the human body. A complete understanding of the physical behavior of the joint is essential for the prevention of injury and efficient treatment of infirmities of the knee. A kinematic model of the human knee including bone surfaces and four major ligaments was studied using techniques pioneered in robotic workspace analysis. The objective of this work was to develop and test methods for determining displacement and velocity workspaces for the model and investigate these workspaces. Data were collected from several sources using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT). Geometric …

An Economic Analysis Of The Allocation Of Research Funding At The National Institutes Of Health., Janet B. Daniel Jan 2001

An Economic Analysis Of The Allocation Of Research Funding At The National Institutes Of Health., Janet B. Daniel

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Our model examines the allocation of medical research funds at the National Institutes of Health using public interest theory, incremental budgeting theory, and special interest group theory. We use the allocation of research funds among various diseases and measures of the burden of disease on the population to test the hypothesis that the N.I.H. is allocating funds on a pure public interest basis, to test for incremental budgeting effects, and to test for the influence of lobbying and other political variables representing special interest groups. We use pooled cross-sectional, time-series data in a one-way fixed effects model, and also use …

Body Condition, Leptin, And Reproductive Characteristics In Horses., Laura Roland Gentry Jan 2001

Body Condition, Leptin, And Reproductive Characteristics In Horses., Laura Roland Gentry

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A series of experiments was conducted to gain a better understanding of the effects of nutrition and hormonal manipulation on the reproductive processes of the horse. In Experiment 1, body condition score (BCS) and ultrasonic backfat measurements were highly correlated in mares, especially over the tailhead area. In Experiment 2, high BCS (HBCS) mares continued to ovulate during the winter anestrous period, whereas low BCS (LBCS) mares went deeply anestrous. Daily hormone concentrations were not affected by BCS, however, responses to hormonal challenges indicated cyclicity in HBCS mares and reproductive quiescence in LBCS mares. In Experiment 3, treatment of average …

Effects Of Lipids, Amino Acids, And Beta-Cyclodextrin On Gelatinization, Pasting, And Retrogradation Properties Of Rice Starch., Xiaoming Liang Jan 2001

Effects Of Lipids, Amino Acids, And Beta-Cyclodextrin On Gelatinization, Pasting, And Retrogradation Properties Of Rice Starch., Xiaoming Liang

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The primary purpose of this study was to determine the addition of lipids, amino acids, and beta-cyclodextrin effects on commercial rice starch gelatinization, pasting, and retrogradation properties by using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), rapid visco analysis (RVA), and x-ray diffractometry (XRD). Analyses from commercial rice starch showed that the presence of 0.6% monopalmitin (MP) increased the peak viscosity (PV), minimum viscosity (MV), and final viscosity (FV) by 38, 27, and 72 RVU respectively. The pasting temperature was also increased by 6°C, whereas the total setback (TSB) was increased by 45 RVU. Incorporation of lysophosphatidylcholine (LC) and lysophosphatidylethanolamine (LE) also showed …

Compression Of Three-Dimensional Magnetic Resonance Brain Images., Xiaojun Qi Jan 2001

Compression Of Three-Dimensional Magnetic Resonance Brain Images., Xiaojun Qi

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Losslessly compressing a medical image set with multiple slices is paramount in radiology since all the information within a medical image set is crucial for both diagnosis and treatment. This dissertation presents a novel and efficient diagnostically lossless compression scheme (predicted wavelet lossless compression method) for sets of magnetic resonance (MR) brain images, which are called 3-D MR brain images. This compression scheme provides 3-D MR brain images with the progressive and preliminary diagnosis capabilities. The spatial dependency in 3-D MR brain images is studied with histograms, entropy, correlation, and wavelet decomposition coefficients. This spatial dependency is utilized to design …

Effects Of Nitric Oxide Synthase Inhibitors On Equine And Bovine Follicular Dynamics And Steroidogenesis., Carlos Roberto Fontes Pinto Jan 2001

Effects Of Nitric Oxide Synthase Inhibitors On Equine And Bovine Follicular Dynamics And Steroidogenesis., Carlos Roberto Fontes Pinto

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Current scientific literature has shown that: (1) NO is a pro-ovulatory agent and inhibition of its production inhibits ovulation, and (2) NO has strong antisteroidogenic activity, especially on estradiol (E2) production by granulosa cells. The experiments described in this dissertation were designed to answer the following questions involving effects of NO on ovarian physiology: (1) is the inhibitory effect of nitric oxide synthase (NOS) inhibitors on ovulation irreversible (follicular atresia) or temporary (delayed ovulation)? and (2) what is the relationship between NO and hCG-induced preovulatory luteinization? Accordingly, cycling mares were subjected to treatment with NOS inhibitors (L-NAME or aminoguanidine) during …

Dementia Research: Ethics And Policy For The Twenty-First Century, Rebecca Dresser Jan 2001

Dementia Research: Ethics And Policy For The Twenty-First Century, Rebecca Dresser

Georgia Law Review

People in developed countries rank dementia among the most feared threats to human health and life. With an increasing portion of the U.S. population living into the seventh, eighth, and ninth decades, the incidence of dementia is on the rise. So is the incidence of dementia research. In an effort to lighten the burdens on future patients and caregivers, government agencies, pharmaceutical companies, and philanthropic organizations are devoting abundant resources to the study of dementia. Like most human endeavors, dementia research can yield both benefits and harms. On the positive side, research holds out the possibility of better medications and …

Thinking About Life-Sustaining Treatment Late In The Life Of A Demented Person, Thomas Finucane Jan 2001

Thinking About Life-Sustaining Treatment Late In The Life Of A Demented Person, Thomas Finucane

Georgia Law Review

This paper will consider a specific clinical situation: an elderly patient with dementia who becomes seriously ill, where treatment would likely be burdensome but might prolong life. Generic questions are described and the lawyerly Standard Paradigm is developed. Questions are raised about every step of the Standard Paradigm. Finally, there is a discussion of two treatment decisions that are commonly faced late in the course of advanced dementia: tube feeding and attempted cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
