Public Relations And Branding On The Web, Gayle M. Pohl Jan 2001

Public Relations And Branding On The Web, Gayle M. Pohl

Iowa Journal of Communication

David Snyder, a trend analyst and Life Styles Editor of the Futurist states sales via the Internet totaled $6 billion in 1998 and could reach $300 billion by 2002. He says the use of the Internet is doubling every 100 days and people are getting more comfortable conducting transactions over the use of branding to make products and services and images stand out. A strong brand can transcend the product by tapping into consumer needs. In fact, organizations would be wise to think in terms of global brands to take advantage of economies of scale. This article addresses the issue …

Coping Responses Among Aged Home Health Care Clients : A Qualitative Study, Bobbie Kay Grother Jan 2001

Coping Responses Among Aged Home Health Care Clients : A Qualitative Study, Bobbie Kay Grother

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

As people age, they are faced with roles and activities that challenge their intellectual or physical capabilities. People, however, are pragmatic by nature; they seek to use what "works" when faced with predicaments that test their mettle. The purpose of this research has been to understand how aged home health care clients try to maintain valued selves in the face of their declining functional abilities. Data were drawn from qualitative methodological techniques (e.g., participant observation, observational data, and unstructured interviews). In order to provide some structure to this data, a theoretical orientation grounded in symbolic interaction was used in lieu …

Poverty, Democracy And Public Libraries, Kathleen De La Peña Mccook Jan 2001

Poverty, Democracy And Public Libraries, Kathleen De La Peña Mccook

School of Information Faculty Publications

A central feature of public librarianship in the United States is that librarians have worked to develop aclimate of openness by defining library policies to create an institution where all are welcome. In 1990 the American Library Association adopted the policy, “Library Services for the Poor,” in which it is stated , “it is crucial that libraries recognize their role in enabling poor people to participate fully in a democraticsociety, by utilizing a wide variety of available resources and strategies.” ( ALA Handbook of Organization , 1999-2000, policy 61). This policy was adopted because there had been a shifting level …

Effect Of Strength Training And Other Activities On Physical Self-Concept Of Females, Denise Cooksley Glew Jan 2001

Effect Of Strength Training And Other Activities On Physical Self-Concept Of Females, Denise Cooksley Glew

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The past few years have seen an increased interest in the psychological benefits of exercise. The personality factor of self-concept typically remains relatively stable throughout adulthood unless a person's life experiences cause it to change. Physical self-concept, a dimension of self-concept, deals with how an individual views themselves and has been found to be affected by exercise. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of strength training on the physical self-concept of female college students. The study used a pretest, post-test, quasi-experimental design. The Physical Self-Concept Subscale of the Tennessee Self-Concept Scale was used to measure physical …

Gang Aft Agley, Carl E. Schneider Jan 2001

Gang Aft Agley, Carl E. Schneider

Articles

In my last contribution to this column (HCR, July-August 2000), I argued that the law of bioethics has repeatedly failed to achieve the hopes cherished for it. I presented evidence, for example, that most doctors breach the duty of informed consent, that advance directives do not direct patients' care, and that repeated legal attempts to increase organ donation have failed to find the success predicted for them. I closed that column by promising to try to explain this chastening experience. It would, of course, take a lifetime of columns to capture all the reasons the law of bioethics …

Does Your Mediator Measure Up?: Standards Of Practice For Family And Divorce Mediation, Andrew Schepard, Ann Milne Jan 2001

Does Your Mediator Measure Up?: Standards Of Practice For Family And Divorce Mediation, Andrew Schepard, Ann Milne

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

In most states, mediators are largely self-regulated. However, a variety of means have been developed to ensure that mediation services are provided in a competent and professional manner. Some regulation has been undertaken by state governments, courts, and professional associations. In addition, the Model Standards of Practice for Family and Divorce Mediation have been adopted by the American Bar Association (ABA), the Association of Family and Conciliation Courts (AFCC), and other state and local family and divorce mediation groups.

Pomo Parenting, Barbara Stark Jan 2001

Pomo Parenting, Barbara Stark

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

According to the 2000 census, fewer than 24% of American homes are composed of a married couple and their minor children. As family forms proliferate, the meaning of 'parenting' is in flux and an issue of increasingly urgent concern. June Carbone's From Partners to Parents and Nancy Dowd's Redefining Fatherhood explain the transformation of parenting, explore the consequences and propose a range of strategies for dealing with them. This review compares their competing visions and explains how both contribute to a larger project of postmodern family law.

My thesis is that these books represent a major contribution to that project, …

Ideologies Of Discrimination: Personhood And The 'Genetic Group', Janet L. Dolgin Jan 2001

Ideologies Of Discrimination: Personhood And The 'Genetic Group', Janet L. Dolgin

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

‘Ideologies of Discrimination’ considers the implications of the new genetics for understandings of personhood and for understandings of the relationship between people in groups. In particular, the essay delineates and examines the emerging notion of a ‘genetic group’ and considers the social implications of redefining families, racial groups and ethnic groups through express, and often exclusive, reference to a shared genome. One consequence of such redefinition has been the justification and elaboration of stigmatizing images of and discrimination against such groups—especially those, such as Jews and African-Americans, that have long been identified with specific somatic characteristics. A few worrisome trends …

The Cost Of Reducing Scientific Uncertainty Concerning Hormesis: A Commentary, Vern R. Walker Jan 2001

The Cost Of Reducing Scientific Uncertainty Concerning Hormesis: A Commentary, Vern R. Walker

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

Professor Cross provides a preliminary examination of how the regulatory structure of the United States might deal with the reality of hormetic effects. My comments focus on only one aspect of that issue: the scientific uncertainty in fact finding about hormetic effects, and the cost of reducing such uncertainty to an acceptable level. Under federal law in the United States, administrative actions are generally unlawful if a court finds them to be 'arbitrary or capricious. In practice, this means that in order for a rulemaking, licensing decision, or administrative order to be lawful, there must be a rational basis for the …

Domestic Violence And International Law: Good-Bye Earl (Hans, Pedro, Gen, Chou, Etc.), Barbara Stark Jan 2001

Domestic Violence And International Law: Good-Bye Earl (Hans, Pedro, Gen, Chou, Etc.), Barbara Stark

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

In Good-Bye Earl, the Dixie Chicks ("Chicks") tell an old, all-too-familiar story. After high school graduation, a young woman looks for opportunities in her small town and "all she could see was Earl." A short, miserable marriage later, she files for divorce. But Earl "walked right through that restraining order and put her in intensive care." Before leaving the hospital, she telephones her old friend. They cook a special batch of black-eyed peas for Earl, which soon makes him "a missing person who nobody missed at all."

This is not a song about vigilante justice; it is a song about …

Juror's Perception Of Recovered Memory, Type Of Trauma And Adult Witness Demeanor, Donna Marie Vigilante Jan 2001

Juror's Perception Of Recovered Memory, Type Of Trauma And Adult Witness Demeanor, Donna Marie Vigilante

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

College students judged the testimony in a civil trial in which a childhood memory had been recovered after 20 years. Participants were 108 students (n = 79 female and 29 male) enrolled in undergraduate psychology courses. The design was a 2 X 2 X 2 between subjects factorial design which investigated effects of the type of incident (sexual abuse/hit-and-run), how the memory was recovered (therapy/wedding), and type of testimony (assertive/emotional). The study determined that mock jurors were likely to perceive the plaintiff's testimony as credible when she testified she was sexually abused as a child rather than when she was …

Improving Compliance: Listening To The Patient's Perspective, Faith Coleman Jan 2001

Improving Compliance: Listening To The Patient's Perspective, Faith Coleman

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

A large number of patients do not follow medical advice for reasons generally unclear to the health care provider. Significant morbidity and mortality can be outcomes of noncompliance. The purpose of this naturalistic inquiry was to study and clarify from the patient's perspective, issues identified as influencing the ability to comply with provider recommendations. Data collection and analysis occurred simultaneously as a fluid process of organizing and synthesizing qualitative material into categories or themes that emerged to illuminate a phenomenon. Seventy-six percent of participants described themselves as 100% compliant though they did not take medications as prescribed or failed to …

International Water Law For The 21st Century: The Contribution Of The U.N. Convention, Stephen C. Mccaffrey Jan 2001

International Water Law For The 21st Century: The Contribution Of The U.N. Convention, Stephen C. Mccaffrey

McGeorge School of Law Scholarly Articles

In May, 1997, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Convention on the Law of the Non- Navigational Uses of International Watercourses, a treaty that largely codifies the general principles of international water law. While not entirely free from controversy, the Convention has already been influential and will doubtless continue to be well into the 21st century. This paper provides an overview of the Convention, comments on some of its salient provisions, and considers its future influence.
