Genetic Diversity In The Bo'an, Salar, And Dongxiang : Co-Resident Muslim Populations In Gansu Province, P.R. China, Thomas Baric
Genetic Diversity In The Bo'an, Salar, And Dongxiang : Co-Resident Muslim Populations In Gansu Province, P.R. China, Thomas Baric
Theses : Honours
Patterns s of genetic diversity within and between three co-resident Muslim populations from Gansu Provence in the Peoples Republic of China were examined and the results contrasted with historical information. This study of members of the Bo'an, Salar and Dongxiang communities will contribute to a clearer understanding of the origins and migratory patterns of Muslims in PR China, and more generally the effect of population subdivision on gene pool structure and composition. Ten autosomal and live Y-chromosome microsatellite loci were genotyped to determine allele distribution patterns. Subsequently, the D-loop region of mitochondrial DNA was sequenced to complement the autosomal and …

School-Community Links : Taking Cricket In Sport Education Beyond Bell Times, Adrian Lister
School-Community Links : Taking Cricket In Sport Education Beyond Bell Times, Adrian Lister
Theses : Honours
The aim of this study is to provide an in-depth analysis of several schools and their attempts to forge school-community links with local clubs during a season of SEPEP Cricket. This research complements ongoing research of the SEPEP curriculum model by focusing on the type of school-community links possible during a season of SEPEP Cricket. Teachers suggested a range of school-community link strategies that sought to increase the participation of students in community sporting programs through links developed with school sport and physical education programs. Adopting quantitative and qualitative research methods, mainly survey and interview data collection procedures, the perceptions …
Pearson's Paradox : An Emergent Social Reality, Anthony Dews
Pearson's Paradox : An Emergent Social Reality, Anthony Dews
Theses : Honours
In his speech The Light on the Hill Noel Pearson criticises the nature of contemporary social reality in Australia. In his view this social reality is co-dependent in portraying Indigenous Australians as victims and non-Indigenous Australians as guilty. The result has been the generation of a welfare mentality to the structural disadvantage of Indigenous Australians. I conclude that the debate Pearson has initiated is ongoing. This debate has adopted ideological overtones consistent with emphases on individual and community development and these emphases are emerging in policy. However I suggest that governments are seeking to divest responsibility for individual and community …
The Personal Is Political And The Political Can Be Very Bloody Personal : Family Farming In A Deregulated Dairy Industry, Terese Reid
Theses : Honours
This qualitative study considers the links between the political ideology that led to the deregulation of the dairy industry in July 2000 and the personal lived experiences of dairy farming families at a grass roots level. The post-deregulation experiences of dairy farming families within the South West region of Western are investigated through an engaged critical ethnographic methodology. A critical analysis of the political policies relating to dairy deregulation, is also incorporated within the study's methodological framework. The underlying aims of critical ethnography are emancipation, empowerment and liberation. The central purpose of this research is to give the daily farming …

Living With Hepatitis C : A Literature Review, & The Physical, Psychological And Social Impacts Of Hepatitis C And The Effects On Quality Of Life, Narelle Cockman
Theses : Honours
Hepatitis C (HCV) is a blood borne virus that affects the liver. It has become one of the most widespread blood borne viruses in Australia, now reaching epidemic proportions within the population. Given that HCV is a chronic long-term illness, with long term effects, a positive diagnosis potentially impacts on various aspects of' a person's life. The aim of this paper was to review HCV related research to examine what it is like for people living with the virus and the possible personal and social impacts of a positive diagnosis. The nature of HCV, including current incidence and prevalence rates, …
Muscle Responses To High-Intensity Eccentric Exercise : A Comparison Between Untrained And Highly Resistance-Trained Subjects, Gregory T. Morgan
Muscle Responses To High-Intensity Eccentric Exercise : A Comparison Between Untrained And Highly Resistance-Trained Subjects, Gregory T. Morgan
Theses : Honours
Eccentric exercise, which is when the muscle produces force as it lengthens, has been shown to result in decrements to muscle functions. This study was designed to investigate whether there was a difference between the muscle responses of untrained (n = 8) and resistance-trained (n = 8) individuals after a bout of high-intensity eccentric exercise of the elbow flexors. All subjects were males aged 18 to 45 years and recruited based on specific training criteria. Subjects performed l0 sets of 6 maximal eccentric contractions of the elbow flexor muscles on an isokinetic dynamometer. 10 seconds rest was provided between each …
Docile Bodies Of Water : Artificial Wetlands And Imagineered Suburbs, Steven Philip Mckiernan
Docile Bodies Of Water : Artificial Wetlands And Imagineered Suburbs, Steven Philip Mckiernan
Theses : Honours
Artificial wetlands are becoming an ever more visible feature of the landscape of Perth and the Swan Coastal Plain. They are appearing in the centre of new suburbs and also in the remediation of stormwater systems. Crucially wetlands have been a denigrated and abused part of the landscape. Imported landscape aesthetics have seen the function of wetlands as being an impediment to progress and the development of land. For indigenous Aboriginal peoples of the land, Nyoongar peoples, wetlandspaces (Giblett, I996a) are crucial to their inclusive understanding of 'country'. Intertwined with notions of spirituality, stewardship, and food source among others. With …
Exploring What Men's Perception Of A 'Good' Family Is, And How This Understanding Shapes Their Roles And Functioning Within Their Family, Grahame L. Paull
Exploring What Men's Perception Of A 'Good' Family Is, And How This Understanding Shapes Their Roles And Functioning Within Their Family, Grahame L. Paull
Theses : Honours
This study was based on the belief that the dynamics of personal relationships is the basis of social life and personal well-being. There is growing support in the literature however suggesting that the gap between men's family relationship functioning, and their ideals of how life ought to be is widening. The purpose of this research therefore was to explore through men's own experiences what their perception of a 'good' family is, and how this understanding shapes their roles and functioning within their family. Using the three concepts of family as a symbolic structure of meaning, masculinity and cognition, as the …
The Case For The Electromagnetic Commons An Ecocultural Intervention In Australian Spectrum Management, Scott Smith
The Case For The Electromagnetic Commons An Ecocultural Intervention In Australian Spectrum Management, Scott Smith
Theses : Honours
In the globalised world of the electronic, information age, there is one resource that increasingly appears to play a pertinent role in the future of our communications systems. The electromagnetosphere is an ecological region that is largely unacknowledged outside of scientific circles: it is one of those naturally-occurring phenomena that we simply take for granted. But with developments in communications technology we have learnt to tap the energies of this natural phenomenon, and in tum have developed a complex system of management and regulation where a 'property-mimicking' regime of allocation and licensing is in place. There are movements however, to …
The Effect Of Moderate +Gz On Cervical Muscle Strength Of Raaf Trainee Pilots Flying Pc-9 Aircraft, Elissa Jane Burton
The Effect Of Moderate +Gz On Cervical Muscle Strength Of Raaf Trainee Pilots Flying Pc-9 Aircraft, Elissa Jane Burton
Theses : Honours
External stimulus/loading initiates adaptations within skeletal muscle. Whilst performing flying manoeuvres under +Gz it has been previously found that the cervical area has the highest loading. The purpose of this study was to examine cervical muscle response to moderate +Gz force (+4-6Gz) loading generated during RAAF pilot training. Cervical muscle strength was monitored in nine RAAF pilots completing an eight-month flight training course and ten controls matched for gender, age, height and weight. Cervical muscle strength and range of movement were measured at baseline and at eight months using the Multi-Cervical Rehabilitation Unit (Hanoun, Canada). Also measured, using EMG, was …
The Assessment Of Satellite Remote Sensing As A Tool For Determining Sea Surface Temperatures In Nearshore Environments, Fabienne Faskel
The Assessment Of Satellite Remote Sensing As A Tool For Determining Sea Surface Temperatures In Nearshore Environments, Fabienne Faskel
Theses : Honours
The use of satellite remote sensing for environmental management applications has seen a marked increase over the past decade. Remotely sensed data are obtainable for a variety of parameters, such as mineral exploration, species migration, and for determining sea surface temperatures (SSTs). This study examined whether satellite remote sensing is a viable option for determining SSTs in coastal waters, as traditionally this application has only been applied to open-ocean, offshore waters. SSTs in the nearshore waters of Rottnest Island, Western Australia, were determined using in situ temperature loggers and remotely sensed satellite data. Initially the accuracy of the satellite sea …
What Features Of Interactive Multimedia Technology Maximise The Motivation Of Primary School Aged Children Learning Music Theory?, Nick Netis
Theses : Honours
This study was conducted to find out what features of interactive multimedia elements best engage children between the ages of 8 and 12 in the process of learning music theory. Previous research into similar areas has indicated that multimedia technologies, such as CD-ROM, arc advantageous in teaching musical theory. A commercially available software application, Musicolour, that uses multimedia delivery of musical theory lessons, was analysed to identify the elements that the students found motivating. These features included the use of a combination of audio cues, graphical cues and interactivity. The findings were analysed to determine which multimedia elements or combination …

Using Habitat Characteristics And Predictive Gis Modelling To Aid In Conserving The Heath Mouse (Pseudomys Shortridgei) In Lake Magenta Nature Reserve, Kirsty Quinlan
Theses : Honours
The Heath Mouse (Pseutlomys shortridgei) was formerly widely distributed in Western Australia and Victoria. However, now it is known only to exist in areasof fragmented habitat. Heath Mouse populations have not been investigated in Western Australia, as it was thought to be extinct in the state until its rediscovery in 1987. It is known from only tour locations, and from these, the highest numbers known are probably the 18 captures of this mouse from five years of trapping in Lake Magenta Nature Reserve. Given the few numbers of Heath Mice, the purpose of this study was to identify …
The Effects Of Ageing On The Myocardium, Alana J. Mason
The Effects Of Ageing On The Myocardium, Alana J. Mason
Theses : Honours
Investigating the causes of ageing on the myocardium is especially important for the future health of Australia's ageing population, which is increasing due to increased life expectancy (AIHW, 1999). Cardiovascular disease is currently Australia's greatest health problem ( AIHW, 1999), and since the aged population is most commonly affected by this disease (HSVD, 1999), investigating the causes of ageing of the myocardium and the predisposing factors of cardiovascular disease is important for the future health of Australia's ageing population. In this study, male and female Wistar rats [young (11 = 8, aged 12-30 weeks old), middle aged (11 = 6, …
Adequacy Of Terrestrial Fauna Surveys For The Preparation Of Environmental Impact Assessments In The Mining Industry Of Western Australia [Thesis], Jason L. Fraser
Adequacy Of Terrestrial Fauna Surveys For The Preparation Of Environmental Impact Assessments In The Mining Industry Of Western Australia [Thesis], Jason L. Fraser
Theses : Honours
The Environmental protection Authority has indicated that terrestrial fauna surveys as undertaken for the purpose of preparing Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) are not providing adequate information to enable decision-makers to assess development impacts on biodiversity and ecosystems. In the absence of a protocol to assess current standards of terrestrial fauna surveys, 'best practice' was defined through discussions held with an 'expert panel', and quantified through a questionnaire. This study examined current standards of terrestrial vertebrate fauna surveys, prepared for the purpose of EIA, with 'best practice' as defined by relevant expert opinion. Strengths and weaknesses of terrestrial fauna surveys were …
Fathers' Self-Perceptions Of Their Parenting Role Identity And Its Impact On Levels Of Father-Child Involvement: A Comparison Of Married And Contact Fathers, Natasha M. Vawser
Fathers' Self-Perceptions Of Their Parenting Role Identity And Its Impact On Levels Of Father-Child Involvement: A Comparison Of Married And Contact Fathers, Natasha M. Vawser
Theses : Honours
It has been extensively documented that contact fathers decrease involvement with their children after divorce (Amato & Booth, 1996). Role theory purports that this pattern of father involvement after divorce is a result or contact fathers experiencing parental role ambiguity. The constraints of visitation make it difficult to maintain parental roles previously performed in the marriage (Ihinger-Tallman, Pasley & Buchler, 1993). American research has provided support for role theory: however no known equivalent research has been conducted on Australian contact fathers. This study replicated Minton and Pasley's (1996) research with 46 contact and 64 married fathers. Participants completed the Self-Perceptions …
Back Stress And Assistance Exercises In Extreme Weightlifting, Adam J. Beard
Back Stress And Assistance Exercises In Extreme Weightlifting, Adam J. Beard
Theses : Honours
The purpose or this study was to test the suitability or selected assistance exercises to strengthen the low back for the Olympic lilts in elite weightlifters. Four subjects were filmed by a five-camera Motion Analysis system operating at 120Hz. The subjects completed both or the Olympic lifts (Snatch and Clean) at a near one repetition maximum and four assistance exercises (Bent-over Row, Clean Pull Deadlift, Romanian Deadlift, and Good Morning) at an intensity typically performed at a routine training session. Peak moments, compressive and shear forces about the L5/S1 intervertebral joint were calculated via a top-down inverse dynamics model. Comparisons …
Mine Dewatering In Arid, Saline Environments In Western Australia: The Response Of Biota Emerging From Rehydrated Sediments, Charelle Harkins
Mine Dewatering In Arid, Saline Environments In Western Australia: The Response Of Biota Emerging From Rehydrated Sediments, Charelle Harkins
Theses : Honours
Mine dewatering is a critical part of the mining process to prevent flooding of underground or open pits, to allow for the excavation of the available resources. Groundwater is abstracted from underground pits to the surface through extraction bores. The issue of where to discharge the excess water is a major concern. The use of natural wetlands is one option for mine water discharge. Saline lakes in arid areas are ideal receiving environments for discharge options, acting as evaporation facilities for the storage and disposal of excess mine water. Mine water discharge into ephemeral lake systems modifies the volume of …
Documentary Photography/Postmodern Commodities, Allan Radich
Documentary Photography/Postmodern Commodities, Allan Radich
Theses : Honours
This honours project is divided into two parts. Part one is the written thesis. Part two is the photographic component. Part one discusses some of the practices and discourses associated with 'documentary' photography. Some documentary practices and discourses of the past can be seen to be culturally divisive. These practices and discourses were based on being, white, male and European. This ideology and its discursive modes are in conflict with contemporary photographic practices and the relevant social and cultural theories that define it. The thesis defines the discourses and practices of the modernist and postmodernist documentary photographer. It highlights the …

Palestinian Private Property Rights In Israel And The Occupied Territories, Stacy Howlett
Palestinian Private Property Rights In Israel And The Occupied Territories, Stacy Howlett
Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law
As the birth pangs of an emerging Palestinian state rage on, one question bars settlement, reconciliation, and peace: who is entitled to the land? On a macrocosmic level, this question has and will be answered through diplomatic negotiations, political pressure, and violence. The microcosmic question of the disposition of private property, however, must be taken into consideration before any lasting peace agreement can be reached.
The rights and interests of Palestinian refugees and Israeli settlers with respect to the land they have an interest in must be balanced with national needs for territorial continuity and peace. By tracing the transfer …
The Grass Will Not Be Trampled Because The Tigers Need Not Fight, Markus G. Puder
The Grass Will Not Be Trampled Because The Tigers Need Not Fight, Markus G. Puder
Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law
This Article examines the relationship between the Federal Republic of Germany and the German Democratic Republic, and explores whether the German experience may contain lessons for the relations between the People's Republic of China and Taiwan. The Author's analysis of the German situation begins with a discussion of the relations between the separate German states, with a particular emphasis on how that relationship was shaped by the Basic Treaty. That document provided for the promotion of peaceful relations, recognition of independence and sovereignty of each nation, as well as a normalization of the diplomatic relations. After ratification, the Bavarian State …
A Brave New Lochner Era? The Constitutionality Of Nafta Chapter 11, Steve Louthan
A Brave New Lochner Era? The Constitutionality Of Nafta Chapter 11, Steve Louthan
Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law
In the eight years since its adoption, NAFTA Chapter 11 has escaped significant scrutiny from academics and journalists alike. However, with the recent filing of several Chapter 11 expropriation claims involving U.S. states, Chapter 11 has begun to gain some notoriety in the press and sparked at least two legal symposia this past year.
This Note begins by highlighting the recent Methanex Chapter 11 claim involving the State of California. Methanex, a Canadian chemical manufacturer and importer, claimed $1.6 billion in damages over California's ban of the chemical MTBE. Despite the EPA'S classification of MTBE as a possible carcinogen and …
