Federal Tax Collection Controversies In The Era Of Drye, Steve R. Johnson Jan 2001

Federal Tax Collection Controversies In The Era Of Drye, Steve R. Johnson

Articles by Maurer Faculty

By "tax collection controversies," I mean cases in which it has been established that the taxpayer owes additional taxes, those taxes remain unpaid, and the IRS is attempting to enforce collection out of the taxpayer's assets. Such cases are numerous and involve attorneys in general legal practice as well as tax specialists. For example, the taxpayer may be your client for non-tax matters, and may expect you to handle her tax collection controversy as well. Or, your client may not be the taxpayer herself, but instead someone who co-owns property with the taxpayer. Your client expects you to make sure …

"Just As Good As They Are": Voices Of Contemporary Women Involved In Farming And Ranching In North Dakota, Heidi L. Dyrstad

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine the current experiences of women involved in farming and ranching in North Dakota. Specifically, women from across the state of North Dakota were interviewed to further our understanding of their lives as they experienced and reacted to the changing nature of agriculture. Interviewing was employed as the primary method of investigation to allow the women's voices to be conveyed directly to others.

Through analysis based in grounded theory methodology, three descriptive assertions emerged from the interview data, and they are as follows: (1) The women involved in farming and ranching in this …

Upper Rio Grande Basin: Finding Flexibility In Federal Reservoir System Operations Within The Web Of Water Laws, Policies, And Institutions, Gail Stockton, William Deragon, Lisa Robert

Law of the Rio Chama

An intricate structure of water laws, policies and institutions in the upper Rio Grande basin provides the framework for operation of nearly a dozen federal reservoirs and related projects by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Bureau of Reclamation. These two agencies are responsible, respectively, for controlling and safely passing flood flows, and for storing and releasing water for agricultural, municipal / industrial use and other uses. The institutions encountered or affected by the Rio Grande as it flows from its headwaters in Colorado to Fort Quitman, Texas, include two counties, as many local governments and a myriad …

Cleaning Up The Tracks: Superfund Meets Rails-To-Trails, Clifford J. Villa Jan 2001

Cleaning Up The Tracks: Superfund Meets Rails-To-Trails, Clifford J. Villa

Faculty Scholarship

For more than one hundred years, railroad cars rumbled and roared along tracks in the Coeur d'Alene River Basin, serving the mining industry in the Panhandle of northern Idaho. As in many parts of the American West, the history of railroads in northern Idaho largely reflects the history of mining in the region. The first gold was discovered in this area in 1883, the same year that the area saw its first line of the Northern Pacific Railroad. In 1885, the Bunker Hill mine was established near the present town of Kellogg. Four years later, the first rail line of …

The Uniform Mediation Act: To The Spoiled Go The Privileges, Scott H. Hughes Jan 2001

The Uniform Mediation Act: To The Spoiled Go The Privileges, Scott H. Hughes

Faculty Scholarship

The Uniform Mediation Act, as currently written and approved by NCCUSL, may unnecessarily cause the destruction of self-determination in many cases. The provisions demonstrate favoritism for mediators and may result in damage to the integrity of the process. Further, the nature of the provisions restricting the parties access to the exceptions to the privilege may both increase the number of lawsuits against mediators and also encourage wrongful behavior on the part of disputants. None of this will ultimately inure to the benefit of mediation as an institution. If it is necessary to have a privilege for mediation, certain elements should …

Adolescents And Sport : A Case Study Of Boys' Drop-Out From Basketball, P. N. A. Jelovsek Jan 2001

Adolescents And Sport : A Case Study Of Boys' Drop-Out From Basketball, P. N. A. Jelovsek

Theses : Honours

This thesis was designed to acquire comprehensible awareness of specific drop-out cases from basketball, specifically adolescent boys between the ages of twelve and fifteen, at Cockburn Basketball Stadium and hence abate the incidence of adolescent drop-out. My intention was to uncover what happened to these adolescents and what led them to decide to stop playing basketball. I also wished to ascertain what meaning these adolescents ascribed to the events that occurred whilst playing which led them to decide to stop playing. The Cockburn Basketball Association had 190-plus junior teams in semester 1, 1996 and only 86 junior teams in semester …
