Quality Of Life In A Heart Failure Population, Diane S. Rexford Jan 2001

Quality Of Life In A Heart Failure Population, Diane S. Rexford

Masters Theses

The purpose of this secondary analysis was to identify what impact nursing approaches had on quality of life over time in a heart failure population. The sample was those patients who were receiving home care for heart failure.

The theoretical framework was the King theory of goal attainment. This secondary analysis used data from the study by Dr. Kay Setter Kline, Home Care Outcomes for Heart Failure: A Test of Two Nursing Interventions. The specific tools utilized were a demographic tool and the Ferrans and Powers Quality of Life Index: Cardiac Version III. The subjects received nursing approaches from graduate …

Faculty And Student Perceptions Of Effective Clinical Teachers, Sylvia A. Counts

Masters Theses

The purpose of this descriptive study was to identify which characteristics of clinical teachers were considered most important by associate degree nursing (ADN) students and Acuity, and to investigate whether the perception of effective clinical teacher characteristics (ECTC) change as the student advances toward graduation. Imogene King’s conceptual framework for nursing served as the framework for this study. Faculty and students were surveyed using the Clinical Teacher Characteristic Instrument (CTCl). The collected data was analyzed using descriptive statistics. A Mann-Whitney U test was used to investigate if there were significant differences in perceptions between faculty and students. A Kruskal-Wallis test …

Nurse Managers' Responses To Chemically Impaired Nurses, Dorothy Taylor Moon

Masters Theses

The purpose of this study was to examine the attitudes of nurse managers toward chemically impaired nurses and to understand how managers respond to nurses in their charge. The research further examined whether certain demographic characteristics influenced the nurse managers' attitudes.

A descriptive research design with a probability convenience sample was used. The sample consisted of 83 nurse executives from throughout Michigan. The sample was randomly selected from the roster of the Michigan Organization of Nurse Executives (MONE). Data were obtained through a mailed survey.

Analyses of the data revealed that while managers held different attitudes and perceptions toward impaired …

Knowledge About Stroke In Adults From Rural Communities, Julie Billett

Masters Theses

Fifty middle to low-income adult clients of a rural family care center were surveyed in a descriptive correlational study in order to determine their abilities to identify the signs and symptoms of a stroke and their knowledge of stroke risk. Additionally, Pearson’s Correlation Coefficient was used to ascertain whether the participants’ level of knowledge was related to their actual stroke risk, as identified by the American Heart Association’s Stroke Risk Tool Descriptive analysis of the item responses revealed that the percentage of the sample correctly identifying individual signs and symptoms ranged from 44 to 77%. When actual stroke risk was …

The Significance Of Trust In The Research Consent Process With African Americans, Catherine E. Earl, Pamela J. Penney Jan 2001

The Significance Of Trust In The Research Consent Process With African Americans, Catherine E. Earl, Pamela J. Penney

Peer Reviewed Articles

Nurses and other health scientists face serious challenges in recruiting African Americans as research participants. The trend in published research shows a declining representation of African Americans in study groups, particularly in nursing and clinical trial research (Mouton, Harris, Rovi, Solorzano, & Johnson, l997; Shavers-Hornaday, Lynch, Burmeister, & Torner, l997; Plowden &Wenger, 2001). Published research involving African Americans has almost disappeared from the literature in major American Psychological Association journals since the l970s; the overall percentage of research studies involving African Americans is a mere 3.6% (Graham, l992).

A review of the literature offers reasons for African American’s lack of …

Hydrologic Events And Water Quality In The Pigeon River, Ottawa County, Michigan, Neil W. Macdonald, Richard R. Rediske, Jonathan E. Van Denend Jan 2001

Hydrologic Events And Water Quality In The Pigeon River, Ottawa County, Michigan, Neil W. Macdonald, Richard R. Rediske, Jonathan E. Van Denend

Peer Reviewed Publications

The Pigeon River drains a 16,765-ha agricultural watershed in western Ottawa County, Michigan and discharges into south-central Lake Michigan. Extensive areas of wetlands in the upper watershed were drained in the 1920s, causing significantly altered hydrology characteristics by flashy discharges during storms and periods of snowmelt. We studied stream chemistry and hydrology for a four-year period between September, 1996, and October, 2000, to determine water quality status, to estimate annual nutrient exports, and to evaluate the effects of different seasonal flow types. Results of our study confirmed that the upper reaches of the Pigeon River experience chronically degraded water quality, …

Increased Severity Of Hsv-1 Keratitis And Mortality In Mice Lacking The 2–5a-Dependent Rnase L Gene, Xiaodong Zheng, Robert H. Silverman, Aimin Zhou, Tomoko Goto, Byoung Se Kwon, Herbert E. Kaufman, James M. Hill

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Purpose: The2′,5′-oligoadenylate-dependent RNase L gene functions in the interferon-inducible RNA decay pathway known as the 2–5A system. The purpose of this study was to determine whether the absence of this gene affects the pathogenesis of herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) ocular infection in the mouse. Methods: HSV-1 (strain McKrae) was applied bilaterally to unscarified corneas of RNase L–null mice and congenic controls. To evaluate the severity of herpetic keratitis, slit lamp examinations (SLE) were performed every other day for 14 days. To study corneal histology and apoptosis, HSV-1–inoculated RNase-L-null and congenic control mice, as well as mock-inoculated mice (apoptosis …

The Marlboro Man's Secret Versus The Public Health: Trade Secrets And Unconstitutional Takings In Phillip Morris V. Reilly, Melanie Tang

UC Law Constitutional Quarterly

Trade secrets have traditionally been considered to be property interests under the law protected by the Fifth Amendment. However, in a series of decisions finding a Massachusetts tobacco product disclosure law to be unconstitutional, the Massachusetts district court departed from established Fifth Amendment takings case law, setting a precedent for successful "regulatory takings" challenges by private companies to public health, welfare, and safety laws. This Note discusses the novel interpretation of a property owner's reasonable investment-backed expectations advanced by the Phillip Morris holdings in contravention to Ruckelshaus v. Monsanto, as x ell as the misguided analysis of the character of …

Faculty Publications - College of Physical Therapy

Study Design: Case study.

Objective: To compare knee kinematics and moments of nongiving way trials to a giving way trial during a combined stepping and crossover cutting activity.

Background: The knee kinematics and moments associated with giving way episodes sugge motor control strategies that lead to instability and recovery of stability during movement.

Methods and Measures: A 27-year-old woman with anterior cruciate ligament deficiency reported giving way while performing a combined stepping and crossover cutting activity. P motion analysis system recorded motion of the pelvis, femur, tibia, and foot using 3 infrarec emitting diodes placed on each segment at 60 …

Psychologist Gender And Sex Bias In Diagnosing Histrionic And Narcissistic Personality Disorders, Kevin B. Erickson Jan 2001

Psychologist Gender And Sex Bias In Diagnosing Histrionic And Narcissistic Personality Disorders, Kevin B. Erickson

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study investigated the relative influence of gender and sex on psychologists' diagnoses of histrionic (HPD) and narcissistic (NPD) personality disorders. Gender was defined according to conventional behavioral norms, and included the categories of masculine, feminine, and androgynous. Sex was defined by biological features, and included the categories of male, female, and sex-unspecified. Psychologists were mailed a survey and asked to assign a single diagnosis to a clinical case vignette that was equally representative of DSM-IV (APA, 1994) HPD and NPD criteria, but which varied regarding the nine possible pairings of a gender and a sex. A total of 184 …

Beyond The Blackboard: Regulating Distance Learning In Higher Education, Leslie T. Thornton Jan 2001

Beyond The Blackboard: Regulating Distance Learning In Higher Education, Leslie T. Thornton

Vanderbilt Journal of Entertainment & Technology Law

It is not so surprising that traditional institutions of higher education have been relatively slower than businesses, for example, to embrace the potential of the new technologies, and have lost students to those institutions and businesses which have been more willing to change. But technology is playing an enormous role in the shape, size, and direction of education, and it's not waiting for the leaders of traditional institutions--or anyone else, for that matter--to join the club.

This Article examines the scope and impact of that role, specifically as it has developed through a new trend toward online "distance education" or …

Life On The Edge: Community And Trade On The Anglo -American Periphery, Pemaquid, Maine, 1610--1689, Neill De Paoli

Doctoral Dissertations

Seventeenth-century New England's northern frontier has been an important but poorly understood place of contact between a diverse array of English, French, and Indian actors who traded, socialized, and fought with one another over land, commercial and political alliances. The English fishing settlement of Pemaquid was a key player in this world. Pemaquid emerged as one of New England's earliest year-round settlements after its beginning as a migratory fishing station in the early 1610s. In those early years, Pemaquid benefited and paid for its strategic position on the northern edge of New England. It was situated in a region that …

Does The Individuals With Disabilities Education Act Exclude Gifted And Talented Children With Emotional Disabilities - An Analysis Of J.D. V. Pawlet., Laura Ketterman Jan 2001

Does The Individuals With Disabilities Education Act Exclude Gifted And Talented Children With Emotional Disabilities - An Analysis Of J.D. V. Pawlet., Laura Ketterman

St. Mary's Law Journal

Disabled children benefit from federal legislation which guarantees a free, appropriate education. While no federal mandate requires providing special education for gifted and talented children, the government encourages schools to offer gifted and talented programs. Gifted and talented children with emotional disabilities, however, often fall between these two groups and do not qualify for special education under any legislation. Unfortunately, in many gifted and talented children with disabilities the gift hides the disability—or the disability hides the gift. To compound the problem, legislation and recent court decisions fail to recognize that gifted and talented children have unique needs which should …

Director Accountability And The Mediating Role Of The Corporate Board, Margaret M. Blair, Lynn A. Stout Jan 2001

Director Accountability And The Mediating Role Of The Corporate Board, Margaret M. Blair, Lynn A. Stout

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

One of the most pressing questions facing both corporate scholars and businesspeople today is how corporate directors can be made accountable. Before addressing this issue, however, it seems important to consider two antecedent questions: To whom should directors be accountable? And for what?

Contemporary corporate scholarship often starts from a "shareholder primacy" perspective that holds that directors of public corporations ought to be accountable only to the shareholders, and ought to be accountable only for maximizing the value of the shareholders' shares. This perspective rests on the conventional contractarian assumption that the shareholders are the sole residual claimants and …

A Policy Makers Guide To Systemwide Assessment Programs, Margaret Forster Jan 2001

A Policy Makers Guide To Systemwide Assessment Programs, Margaret Forster

Policy maker's guides

This guide provides policy makers with research-based information about systemwide assessment programs. Good decision making at all levels of an education system is facilitated by easily accessible, relevant, and reliable information. Many indicators provide useful input to educational decision making; but the most important indicators are those which address the central concern of education: the promotion of student learning. Education systems monitor student learning—with the fundamental intention of promoting learning—by collecting, analysing and reporting student achievement data. Given that state, national and international achievement studies are both time consuming and expensive, it seems prudent to reflect on this effort: What …
