All Institute for Community Inclusion Publications
This monograph presents the results of secondary analysis of the RSA-911 database from the Rehabilitation Services Administration. All successful VR closures for individuals with mental retardation, cerebral palsy, and epilepsy for six data points between 1985 and 1998 were investigated. Trends in competitive labor market and extended employment (sheltered workshops) closures were examined. The use of supported employment in the VR system and its outcomes were also discussed. Findings include increased incidence of competitive labor market closures and supported employment services, with a decrease in extended employment closures.
Comparisons of successful VR closure outcomes to trends in the general labor …

The Greater Boston Region: Industry Mix Affects Growth, David Terkla
The Greater Boston Region: Industry Mix Affects Growth, David Terkla
Economics Faculty Publication Series
Overall prosperity in the Greater Boston region masks the extreme diversity among its cities and towns. Some areas have experienced robust growth in relatively high paying industries. Others have faced growth only in low-paying jobs, accompanied in many cases by a substantial decline in high-paying sectors. By examining the area’s five subregions in terms of industry types, wage levels, and employment growth, we begin to see reasons for these differences.

Economic Currents: The State Of The State Economy, Alan Clayton-Matthews
Public Policy and Public Affairs Faculty Publication Series
While the state’s economy is still growing, albeit at a much slower rate than in the 1990s, there is a risk of a serious deceleration of economic activity. The evidence we have still favors a “soft landing” for the economy, but the risks of recession appear to have risen substantially.

This article adopts a novel separation of powers framework to analyze the Rehnquist Court's recent decisions under the Commerce Clause and Section Five of the Fourteenth Amendment. We demonstrate in historical terms how the Court's methods for assessing the constitutional adequacy of federal laws have changed dramatically since the mid-1990s, and we argue that these new methods are undermining the proper role of Congress and producing a significant shift in the balance of power between the Branches. We identify two distinct methodologies employed by the Rehnquist Court that have resulted in growing disrespect for Congress - the "crystal ball" and …
Hoarding By Elderly People, Gail Steketee, Randy O. Frost, Hyo-Jin Kim
Hoarding By Elderly People, Gail Steketee, Randy O. Frost, Hyo-Jin Kim
Psychology: Faculty Publications
Although hoarding has been studied in adults, little is known about problems of hoarding by elderly people. This study used a structured telephone interview with elder services providers to investigate hoarding behaviors in relation to functional impairment, cognitive deficits, and physical and psychological conditions in 62 elderly clients. Most elderly hoarders were female, unmarried, and lived alone. Extensive clutter was associated with significant impairment, interfering with basic hygiene, and posing a serious physical threat for many elderly clients. Clients were rarely insightful about their collecting and often resisted change, rendering interventions generally ineffective. Never-married status was associated with more severe …
Crossing The Line: Case Studies Of Identity Development In First Generation College Women, Phyllis A. Wentworth, Bill E. Peterson
Crossing The Line: Case Studies Of Identity Development In First Generation College Women, Phyllis A. Wentworth, Bill E. Peterson
Psychology: Faculty Publications
In this paper we present four case studies of adult women from working class backgrounds who attended Hillside College (a pseudonym for one of the “seven-sister” colleges) during the early 1990s. Although research on women has led, over the past few decades, to a more complex picture of the contexts in which women develop their identities, one important context that has been underexplored is social class. Drawing on data from three lengthy interviews with each of our four participants, our purpose was to explore the identity concerns of adult women from working class backgrounds in their experience getting to and …

Welfare Reform On American Indian Reservations: Initial Experience Of Service Providers And Recipients On Reservations In Arizona, Shanta Pandey, Eddie Brown, Leslie Scheuler-Whitaker
Buder Center for American Indian Studies Research
In this article we document trends in welfare caseloads and some initial experiences of service providers and welfare recipients on reservations within Arizona under Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF). We document the issues and concerns of state and tribal service providers as they implement the legislation on reservations that are often geographically isolated and which lack infrastructure, jobs, childcare and transportation.
We also record experiences of women with children on reservations with the 1996 federal welfare legislation. These families experience similar barriers when trying to move from welfare to work as do their counterparts across the country; however, these …
A Dynamic Programming-Based Approach To Microarray Image Comparison And Registration, Sunil Bosco Rodrigues
A Dynamic Programming-Based Approach To Microarray Image Comparison And Registration, Sunil Bosco Rodrigues
Masters Theses
"Microarray technology is increasingly used as a means of high throughput analysis of human, non-human and plant genomes. Manual methods of array production have inherent imperfections and variations of the quality of output data derived from these arrays. A dynamic programming-based approach is presented to validate the quality of such data prior to insertion into evolving databases in order to assign reliably, genetic aberrations to bio-medical functions. Dynamic programming is used for comparing normal and tumor microarray image pairs and a cost function is developed which gives a value representing the difference between the images. Quality of the image pairs …

The Determinants Of Successful Micro-Ipos: An Analysis Of Issues Made Under The Small Corporate Offering Registration (Scor) Procedure, James C. Brau, Jerome S. Osteryoung
Faculty Publications
In this article we extend the existing IPO literature to the case of micro-IPOs by analyzing a sample of Small Corporate Offering Registration (SCOR) documents from the U.S. state ofWashington. Through theory, we identified variables that should impact the probability of success or failure in a SCOR offering and then empirically tested them. Empirical support was found for the relevance of (1) marketing mechanisms and expenses; (2) ownership and governance factors; (3) business life cycle stages; and (4) signaling factors consistent with our theoretical predictions.

Impaired Splenic Function In Systemic Amyloidosis: Diagnostic Importance Of Peripheral Blood Film, F. Bilwani, Salman Adil, G. N. Kakepoto, Mohammad Khurshid, A. Ahmed
Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine
We describe case of a 40 year old male, who went on to developed systemic amyloidosis 3 years after the diagnosis of chronic renal failure. The diagnosis of systemic amyloidosis was suspected upon a routine examination of periheral blood film showing features of hyposlenism. We would like to highlight the importance of examination of pheripheral blood film in patients with renal failure for the diagnosis of extensive systemic amyloidosis which occasionally leads to functional hyposplenism, recognized by the presence of abnormal red cell morphology and reduced splenic uptake on isotope scan1.
Retention Of New Members Into The Caffin Avenue Seventh-Day Adventist Church, David W. Hinds
Retention Of New Members Into The Caffin Avenue Seventh-Day Adventist Church, David W. Hinds
Doctor of Ministry Projects
This study attempted to identify the reasons why new members stop attending church one to six months after they are accepted into membership of the Caffin Avenue Seventh-day Adventist Church and to find ways to reduce the number of individuals who drop out. The introduction analyzes the biblical and theological basis for a higher retention of new converts. It considers principles found in the book of Acts and concerns for lost membership. A review of relevant literature on the assimilation of new members was done to provide an overview of the problem and to gain insights into reducing the number …

Preaching By Discovery: A Training Program To Help Lay Speakers Develop A Style Of Preaching That Motivates To Action, Michael A. Mnich
Doctor of Ministry Projects
Problem
Many Seventh-day Adventist congregants do not act upon the sermons they hear. Lay preachers often preach in small, rural, Seventh-day Adventist churches. This project sought to develop a six-hour seminar to train lay preachers to preach in a way that motivates hearers to action.
Method
A literature search was conducted on motivational principles in psychology, education, the Bible, and the writings of Ellen G. White. These principles were used to develop the Preaching by Discovery seminar, which was given to the lay preachers of three small rural Seventh-day Adventist churches in Kansas. After the six-hour weekend seminar, lay preachers …

The End Of School Desegregation And The Achievement Gap, David J. Armor
The End Of School Desegregation And The Achievement Gap, David J. Armor
UC Law Constitutional Quarterly
After nearly five decades of school desegregation mandated by federal courts, school districts throughout the nation are being released from court orders, leading some civil rights proponents to complain that ending school desegregation will deprive minority students of educational benefits. This article argues that ending school desegregation will not have any appreciable impact on the academic achievement of African American students. To the extent that desegregation had academic benefits, those benefits have already occurred. Despite the extensive desegregation of American schools during the 1970s and 1980s, a large black-white achievement gap remains, and there is credible evidence that this gap …

Anti-Vibrator Legislation: The Law Is On Shaky Ground, Nicole Schilder
UC Law Constitutional Quarterly
This Note confronts the absurdity of laws that ban the sale and production of sexual devices. These laws are imbedded in the obscenity statutes of Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, Texas, and Virginia. The Note commences with a history of sexual devices in the United States. The Note proceeds to use the 11th Circuit case of Williams v. Pryor and cases from Colorado, Georgia, Kansas, Louisiana, and Texas to demonstrate that anti-sexual device statutes are unconstitutional because they infringe on the privacy right or, in the alternative, are overbroad and thus must fail under the rational basis test.

Reovirus 1/L As A Model To Study The Induction Of Optimal Immunity At Mucosal And Systemic Sites, Sherry Renee Crowe
Reovirus 1/L As A Model To Study The Induction Of Optimal Immunity At Mucosal And Systemic Sites, Sherry Renee Crowe
MUSC Theses and Dissertations
Achieving protective immunity at mucosal sites is critically important for effective immunization against pathogens that colonize the host via the wet epithelium. We utilized reovirus 1/L infection of mice to study immunization strategies for the induction of optimal humoral and cell-mediated immunity at mucosal surfaces. The humoral and cell-mediated responses at mucosal and systemic sites were monitored following upper respiratory tract, or systemic inoculation. Utilizing these models, we found that the combined upper and lower respiratory tract inoculation resulted in optimal humoral immunity proximally (in the respiratory tract), distrally (in the oral, gastrointestinal, and urogenital tracts), and systematically. This immune …

Walk In My Shoes: College Students' And Their Parents' Predictions Of Their Own Health Practices If They Were Each Others' Age, Amy B. Clineff, Colleen Frantz, Charles I. Brooks, Jean P. O'Brien
Modern Psychological Studies
College students and their parents completed a survey of their present health practices. They then completed the same survey for health behaviors they thought they would practice if they were either between the ages of 18 - 22 (for the parent respondents) or 45 - 55 (for the student respondents). The results generally showed the students predicted they would lead healthier lifestyles if older than their parents actually do, and the parents would lead less healthy lifestyles if younger than their children actually do. This distortion of each others' health practices, however, depended to some extent on the specific health …

Staff and Faculty Work
This article examines the impact of electronic technology on libraries and scholarship. It focuses on some of the challenges of using electronic resources in research libraries, which include the cost of acquiring electronic formats and the effect that such expenditures have on other library services and collection development practices. The article also explores how electronic resources have changed the way students and scholars conduct research. The goal of this essay is not to criticize or condemn electronic formats but, rather, to illustrate that electronic technology is simply one tool, among others, for the dissemination of information. As such, electronic resources …
