Monoclonal Light Chain–Mesangial Cell Interactions: Early Signaling Events And Subsequent Pathologic Effects, William J. Russell, James Cardelli, Ed Harris, R. John Baier, Guillermo A. Herrera

Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications

Glomerulopathic monoclonal light chains (G-LC) interact with mesangial cells (MC), resulting in alterations of mesangial homeostasis. Early signaling events control mitogenic activities and cytokine production, which in turn participate in the subsequent pathologic events. Mesangial homeostasis is affected in two very different ways, depending on whether the G-LC is from a patient with light chain deposition disease (LCDD) or light chain–related amyloidosis (AL-Am). In contrast, tubulopathic (T)-LC chains from patients with myeloma cast nephropathy do not significantly interact with MC and result in no alterations in mesangial homeostasis. Therefore, understanding early events in the monoclonal LC–MC interactions is fundamental. MC …

Clearly Canadian--Hill V. Colorado And Free Speech Balancing In The United States And Canada, Donald L. Beschle Jan 2001

Clearly Canadian--Hill V. Colorado And Free Speech Balancing In The United States And Canada, Donald L. Beschle

UC Law Constitutional Quarterly

Two doctrines have equally influenced and informed the debate regrading the scope of the First Amendment free speech guarantee: absolutism versus the balancing of competing interests. Despite the language of the United States Constitution that suggests the application of absolutes, the courts have often resorted to balancing in the resolution of cases. This Article examines the debate by comparing the different approaches taken by the courts in the United States and Canada. This examination reveals that perhaps the two doctrines do not need to negate each other in their application, and that a recent decision by the United States Supreme …

On Oysters And Other Life Lessons: Art Teacher’S Perceptions Of Social Class And Schooling, Kimberly Cosier

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

I had to be taught that the world was not my oyster. As a child I was quite sure that I was destined for a wondrous life of adventure and distinction. I was the first born in my family, the first child, the first grandchild, the first niece; everyone was crazy about me. My mother swears that on the day I was born my father floated across the room, so filled with joy and pride that his feet literally glided above the floor as he held me in his arms for the first time. I realize now that this is …

Granting Forgiveness Or Harboring Grudges: Implications For Emotion, Physiology, And Health, Charlotte Vanoyen-Witvliet, Thomas Ludwig, Kelly L. Vander Laan

Faculty Publications

Interpersonal offenses frequently mar relationships. Theorists have argued that the responses victims adopt toward their offenders have ramifications not only for their cognition, but also for their emotion, physiology, and health. This study examined the immediate emotional and physiological effects that occurred when participants (35 females, 36 males) rehearsed hurtful memories and nursed grudges (i.e., were unforgiving) compared with when they cultivated empathic perspective taking and imagined granting forgiveness (i.e., were forgiving) toward real-life offenders. Unforgiving thoughts prompted more aversive emotion, and significantly higher corrugator (brow) electromyogram (EMG), skin conductance, heart rate, and blood pressure changes from baseline. The EMG, …

Constitutionalism Of The European Union: Judicial Legislation And Political Decision-Making By The European Court Of Justice, Christoph Henkel Jan 2001

Constitutionalism Of The European Union: Judicial Legislation And Political Decision-Making By The European Court Of Justice, Christoph Henkel

Journal Articles

The focus of this article shall be the case law of the European Court of Justice. Despite recent proposals as well as other actions of the Member States to reform the Community Treaties, the expansion of judicial review by the European Court of Justice remains the driving force behind the development of constitutionalism of the European Union. In fact, the European Court of Justice and its case law play the most dominant and consistent role in the integration process. In doing so, the case law of the Court of Justice in part reflects the judicial activism comparable to early U.S. …
