Comparison Of Heart Rates Between Deep Water Running, Treadmill Running, And Cycling, Jennifer Nicole Padilla Jan 2001

Comparison Of Heart Rates Between Deep Water Running, Treadmill Running, And Cycling, Jennifer Nicole Padilla

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Deep water running (DWR) has become an alternate training technique among injured runners. DWR uses similar movements as running and can be a training modality for injured runners. It has not been well established whether the heart rate (HR) in water exercise and land exercise is the same when the workloads in the water and on land are identical. Using runners and swimmers, this study determined if the HR during treadmill running (TR), cycling, and DWR at 60% and 75% of MaxVO2 were different. Ratings of perceived exertion (RPE) between runners and swimmers during TR and DWR were also compared. …

Marya Zaturenska's Depression Diary 1933-1935, Mary Beth Hinton Jan 2001

Marya Zaturenska's Depression Diary 1933-1935, Mary Beth Hinton

The Courier

IN THE DEPRESSION-ERA DIARY of the poet Marya Zaturenska (1902-1982), one meets many of the most influential writers and artists ofthe time: there is Archibald MacLeish at a literary tea, Edward Hopper at the Whitney Museum, Dorothy Parker at a political meeting, T. S. Eliot and Herbert Read at dinner in London. Figures from a more distant past often appear in Zaturenska's insightful commentary on the books she is reading. To her diary, now at Syracuse, she also confides her literary hopes and struggles, her exquisite aesthetic perceptions, her maternal feelings, and her overwhelming anxieties about money, health, and the …

Negotiating Victorian Feminism: Anne Thackeray Ritchie's Short Fiction, Manuela MourãO Jan 2001

Negotiating Victorian Feminism: Anne Thackeray Ritchie's Short Fiction, Manuela MourãO

English Faculty Publications

First paragraph:

Best known for her autobiographical introductions to the collected works of her father, William Makepeace Thackeray, and for her biographical essays on several famous writers, Anne Thackeray Ritchie has repeatedly been considered most important as a source of inside information regarding her famous contemporaries. From Dickens to the Brownings, from Tennyson to James, she counted many of the canonical British nineteenth- and early- twentieth-century writers as her friends and often wrote to and about them.2 The scope of her work, however, is much wider and deserves closer scrutiny than it has so far received.

Spiritual Coping And Well-Functioning Among Psychologists, Paul W. Case, Mark R. Mcminn Jan 2001

Spiritual Coping And Well-Functioning Among Psychologists, Paul W. Case, Mark R. Mcminn

Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program

The work of psychologists can be stressful and demanding, which calls for an understanding of how psychologists cope with the stress of their work and how they prevent distress by establishing habits of well-functioning. Previous studies on psychologists’ well-functioning and coping behaviors have not considered the role of spiritual practices in the life of the professional. 400 psychologists (69% response rate) returned questionnaires rating their levels of distress, coping behaviors, methods of well-functioning, and religious coping. No overall differences were observed in levels of distress between more religious and less religious psychologists. Spiritual practices, especially attending religious services and prayer/meditation, …

Sustained Remission In A Case Of Lupus Nephritis With Cyclosporin Therapy, M A. Rabbani, S M. Shah, A Ahmad Jan 2001

Sustained Remission In A Case Of Lupus Nephritis With Cyclosporin Therapy, M A. Rabbani, S M. Shah, A Ahmad

Section of Nephrology

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) in severe form still presents a major therapeutic challenge. Aggressive treatment of severe renal lesions has improved the prognosis of renal disease over the last decade. However, this benefit is quite frequently offset by the side effects and toxicity of the treatment. Moreover, the disease may appear to be poorly responsive to treatment with steroids and cytotoxic drugs. We report a case of lupus nephritis that relapsed despite having adequate steroid and cytotoxic therapy, but later was successfully treated with cyclosporin. Fifteen months after discontinuing the treatment with cyclosporin, the patient continued to remain in remission.
