Differential Diagnosis Of Orofacial Pain I: Associated With Intracranial And Extracranial Structures And Psychogenic Disorders, Rodolfo Acosta-Ortiz Jan 2001

Differential Diagnosis Of Orofacial Pain I: Associated With Intracranial And Extracranial Structures And Psychogenic Disorders, Rodolfo Acosta-Ortiz

HPD Articles

Orofacial Pain (OFP) is a common problem among the general population and represents a condition that is potentially debilitating and deteriorating. The correct diagnosis is the principal base for an adequate management; in patients with DOF this may be a simple task or a very complex and frustrating experience for both, clinician, and patient. However, the clinician's knowledge of all possible pain condition that can affect the orofacial region can facilitate the diagnostic process. It is important to emphasize that is very difficult to diagnose something unknown for the clinician and even though "common things occur commonly", it is not …

Beer Before Liquor, Or Liquor Before Beer : A Research Review Of Binge Drinking Escalation In Greek-Letter Societies On College Campuses Today, Thomas M. O'Shea Jan 2001

Beer Before Liquor, Or Liquor Before Beer : A Research Review Of Binge Drinking Escalation In Greek-Letter Societies On College Campuses Today, Thomas M. O'Shea

Graduate Research Papers

In 1990 college presidents rated college student alcohol abuse as the problem that gave them the greatest concern (Boyer, 1990). However, one specific college campus population that seems to be more likely to binge drink is those students affiliated with the National Fraternities and Sororities.

The purpose of this paper is: • To focus on and define the concept of binge drinking • To establish specific data that show that binge drinking is a problem with fraternity and sorority members • To research and suggest possible solutions that college administrators may use to combat the binge drinking problem on their …

Disturbed Landscape/Disturbing Processes: Environmental History For The Twenty-First Century, Vera Norwood

American Studies Faculty and Staff Publications

On the first weekend of May 2000, the opening act of the nation's most impressive environmental drama of the summer was staged in Los Alamos, New Mexico. News releases covered a massive forest fire, named the Cerro Grande, exploding through forest stands, consuming over 40,000 acres of homes, recreation areas, and wildlands, burning perilously close to nuclear facilities, and threatening religious sites of Santa Clara pueblo. The fire, generated from a Park Service prescribed burn set in Bandolier National Monument and feeding on heavy fuel loads in the Santa Fe National Forest, raged out of control for days. Los Alamos …

Nf01-488 Creating A Strong Family: Quality Time In Great Quantity, John Defrain Jan 2001

Nf01-488 Creating A Strong Family: Quality Time In Great Quantity, John Defrain

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Societies are often fueled by the platitude, which can be defined as conventional, hackneyed wisdom packaged for general consumption. This common sense created for common living is called upon so often in day-to-day speech that we sometimes fail to recognize it for what it often really is.

Zoonotics and Wildlife Disease: Publications

Buggy Creek (BCR) virus is an arthropod-borne alphavirus that is naturally transmitted to its vertebrate host the cliff swallow (Petrochelidon pyrrhonota) by an invertebrate vector, namely the cimicid swallow bug (Oeciacus vicarius). We examined how the prevalence of the virus varied with the group size of both its vector and host. The study was conducted in southwestern Nebraska where cliff swallows breed in colonies ranging from one to 3700 nests and the bug populations at a site vary directly with the cliff swallow colony size. The percentage of cliff swallow nests containing bugs infected with BCR …

Distribution And Retention Of 137cs In Sediments At The Hanford Site, Washington, James Mckinley, Cynthia Zeissler, John M. Zachara, R. Jeffrey Serne, Richard Lindstrom, Herbert Schaef, Robert Orr Jan 2001

Distribution And Retention Of 137cs In Sediments At The Hanford Site, Washington, James Mckinley, Cynthia Zeissler, John M. Zachara, R. Jeffrey Serne, Richard Lindstrom, Herbert Schaef, Robert Orr

United States Department of Energy: Publications

137Cesium and other contaminants have leaked from single-shell storage tanks (SSTs) into coarse-textured, relatively unweathered unconsolidated sediments. Contaminated sediments were retrieved from beneath a leaky SST to investigate the distribution of adsorbed 137Cs+ across different sediment size fractions. All fractions contained mica (biotite, muscovite, vermiculatized biotite), quartz, and plagioclase along with smectite and kaolinite in the clay-size fraction. A phosphor-plate autoradiograph method was used to identify particular sediment particles responsible for retaining 137Cs+. The Cs-bearing particles were found to be individual mica flakes or agglomerated smectite, mica, quartz, and plagioclase. Of these, only the …

A Practical Guide To Estimating Cleanup Costs, Mike Goldstein, Jon Ritterling Jan 2001

A Practical Guide To Estimating Cleanup Costs, Mike Goldstein, Jon Ritterling

United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications

Cost estimates are frequently developed to evaluate hazardous-waste-site cleanup options in support of a site investigation, remedy selection decision, or assessment of environmental liabilities. The accuracy of the cost estimate depends largely on the quality of the information available at the time it is prepared. This article presents a practical guide to developing a cleanup cost estimate. It includes information on how to document assumptions, use the latest technical resources, and perform basic adjustments to account for uncertainty and the time value of money. The content is based upon a recent guidance document issued by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency …

Zebra Mussel (Dreissena Polymorpha) Selective Filtration Promoted Toxic Microcystis Blooms In Saginaw Bay (Lake Huron) And Lake Erie, Henry A. Vanderploeg, James R. Liebig, Wayne W. Carmichael, Megan A. Agy, Thomas H. Johengen, Gary L. Fahnenstiel, Thomas F. Nalepa Jan 2001

Zebra Mussel (Dreissena Polymorpha) Selective Filtration Promoted Toxic Microcystis Blooms In Saginaw Bay (Lake Huron) And Lake Erie, Henry A. Vanderploeg, James R. Liebig, Wayne W. Carmichael, Megan A. Agy, Thomas H. Johengen, Gary L. Fahnenstiel, Thomas F. Nalepa

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

Microcystis aeruginosa, a planktonic colonial cyanobacterium, was not abundant in the 2-year period before zebra mussel (Dreissena polymorpha) establishment in Saginaw Bay (Lake Huron) but became abundant in three of five summers subsequent of mussel establishment. Using novel methods, we determined clearance, capture, and assimilation rates for zebra mussels feeding on natural and laboratory M. aeruginosa strains offered alone or in combination with other algae. Results were consistent with the hypothesis that zebra mussels promoted blooms of toxic M. aeruginosa in Saginaw Bay, western Lake Erie, and other lakes through selective rejection in pseudofeces. Mussels exhibited high …

Public Beliefs About The Preventability Of Unintentional Injury Deaths, Deborah C. Girasek Jan 2001

Public Beliefs About The Preventability Of Unintentional Injury Deaths, Deborah C. Girasek

Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences

This report is based upon the results of a national random digit dialed telephone survey in which 943 adults were queried. Subjects reported the proportion of deaths due to motor vehicle crashes, falls, fires/burns, drowning and poisoning that they felt were preventable. On average, respondents believed that 56% of ‘fatal accidents’ were preventable; as were 62% of motor vehicle crash deaths, 53% of fall deaths, 67% of drownings, 62% of fire/burn fatalities and 70% of accidental poisonings. Logistic regression models predicting preventability beliefs differed according to the type of injury event in question, but socio-economic status and perceived alcohol involvement …

Predictors Of Patient Satisfaction, Jeffrey L. Jackson, Judith Chamberlin, Kurt Kroenke

Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences

Correlates of patient satisfaction at varying points in time were assessed using a survey with 2-week and 3-month follow-up in a general medicine walk-in clinic, in USA. Five hundred adults presenting with a physical symptom, seen by one of 38 participating clinicians were surveyed and the following measurements were taken into account: patient symptom characteristics, symptom-related expectations, functional status (Medical Outcomes Study Short-Form Health Survey [SF-6]), mental disorders (PRIME-MD), symptom resolution, unmet expectations, satisfaction (RAND 9-item survey), visit costs and health utilization. Physician perception of difficulty (Difficult Doctor-Patient Relationship Questionnaire), and Physician Belief Scale. Immediately after the visit, 260 (52%) …

Tsc13p Is Required For Fatty Acid Elongation And Localizes To A Novel Structure At The Nuclear-Vacuolar Interface In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Sepp D. Kohlwein, Sandra Eder, Chan-Seok Oh, Charles E. Martin, Ken Gable, Dagmar Bacikova, Teresa Dunn Jan 2001

Tsc13p Is Required For Fatty Acid Elongation And Localizes To A Novel Structure At The Nuclear-Vacuolar Interface In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Sepp D. Kohlwein, Sandra Eder, Chan-Seok Oh, Charles E. Martin, Ken Gable, Dagmar Bacikova, Teresa Dunn

Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences

The TSC13/YDL015c gene was identified in a screen for suppressors of the calcium sensitivity of csg2Δ mutants that are defective in sphingolipid synthesis. The fatty acid moiety of sphingolipids in Saccharomyces cerevisiae is a very long chain fatty acid (VLCFA) that is synthesized by a microsomal enzyme system that lengthens the palmitate produced by cytosolic fatty acid synthase by two carbon units in each cycle of elongation. The TSC13 gene encodes a protein required for elongation, possibly the enoyl reductase that catalyzes the last step in each cycle of elongation. The tsc13 mutant accumulates high levels of long-chain bases …

Schmitt, Jack S. Ikeda, Stephen C. Darnell, Patricia R. Watson, Jennifer Bispham, Timothy S. Wallis, Debra L. Weinstein, Eleanor S. Metcalf, Alison D. O'Brien

Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences

In this study, we constructed an flhD (the master flagellar regulator gene) mutant of Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium and compared the virulence of the strain to that of the wild-type strain in a series of assays that included the mouse model of typhoid fever, the mouse macrophage survival assay, an intestinal epithelial cell adherence and invasion assay, and the calf model of enterocolitis. We found that the flhD mutant was more virulent than its parent in the mouse and displayed slightly faster net growth between 4 and 24 h of infection in mouse macrophages. Conversely, the flhD mutant exhibited diminished …

Introduction: Fear And Loathing Of Evolutionary Psychology In The Social Sciences, Daniel Leger, Alan Kamil, Jeffrey A. French

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

When one looks at the intellectual landscape of the modern university, at the scholarly and scientific interests of its faculty, the panorama is seamless. There are no discontinuities. The interests of physicists transmogrify into those of chemists, those of chemists into those of biologists, and so on. The lines, the divisions, between departments have been created out of administrative, not intellectual, necessity.
For example, consider the divide between chemistry and biology. There is a set of chemical processes that are characteristic of living systems. Is the study of these processes chemistry or biology? This is a meaningless question. To be …
