Cultural Competence In Epidemiological Field Work With Cultures In Flux: Romania, Diane Depken, Catherine Zeman
Cultural Competence In Epidemiological Field Work With Cultures In Flux: Romania, Diane Depken, Catherine Zeman
International Journal of Global Health
This article is a case study of conducting field -based epidemiological work in a former communist country. A brief background of Romanian history and culture is followed by discussion of the challenges of doing epidemiological science in a culture experiencing socio-political flux. In this former communist country where a common understanding of specific methods of epidemiological science and research ethics is not necessarily shared by both visiting and indigenous scientists, successful fieldwork depends on a high degree of understanding, sensitivity, and patience. The United States Department of Health and Human Services' Office of Minority Health, OMH provides guidelines for culturally …
The Decline In Child Sexual Abuse Cases., Lisa M. Jones, David Finkelhor
The Decline In Child Sexual Abuse Cases., Lisa M. Jones, David Finkelhor
Crimes Against Children Research Center
Of all crimes against children, sexual abuse has arguably captured the greatest share of attention from child advocates, professionals, policymakers, and the general public. During the 1980’s, increasing numbers of victims were identified each year (American Association for the Protection of Children, 1988) and concerns about this crime intensified. However, a dramatic shift in child sexual abuse trends has occurred. Data from child protective services (CPS) agencies across the country indicate that the increases of the 1980’s were followed by an extensive period of marked declines in the 1990’s. Unfortunately, little effort has been expended to uncover the reasons why …

Demonstrating Collegiality: A Co-Constructed Narrative Inquiry, Elizabeth A. Curry, Deborah C. Walker
Demonstrating Collegiality: A Co-Constructed Narrative Inquiry, Elizabeth A. Curry, Deborah C. Walker
Iowa Journal of Communication
This essay seeks to define a collegial relationship through the experiences of two first year doctoral students at a large state-supported university. The techniques used to develop the co-constructed narrative parallel the authors' development of a collaborative relationship. Using autoethnographic essays and interactive interviews, the authors co-construct several narratives that describe the process of moving from a friendly, social relationship to a scholarly, collaborative relationship, as well as the process of moving from peer reviewers to co-authors. An introductory narrative frames the paper; each of the "interior" narratives is accompanied by an extensive analytic introduction and the interpretation section is …
The Written Text As Identity Dress Rehearsal, Leah E. White
The Written Text As Identity Dress Rehearsal, Leah E. White
Iowa Journal of Communication
Using data gathered through participant observation and interviewing, this paper discusses the narrative performances of identity presented when one verbally discusses their written work. Three categories of narratives are presented: narratives that identify autobiographical elements; narratives that relate shared experiences and; narratives that describe the writing process. Several identity constructing functions of each of these narratives are presented. The paper ends with a discussion of how written communication may be viewed as a dress rehearsal for an upcoming verbal performance of identity.
Privacy Rights In Personal Information: Hipaa And The Privacy Gap Between Fundamental Privacy Rights And Medical Information, 19 J. Marshall J. Computer & Info. L. 535 (2001), Kevin B. Davis
UIC John Marshall Journal of Information Technology & Privacy Law
Advancements in computers and technology have affected nearly every aspect of health care. Although many of the effects of modern technology have benefited health care, a vast increase in the amount of people with access to medical information has led to numerous privacy concerns. In response to these new problems, and at the direction of Congress through the Health Insurance Portability & Accountability Act of 1996 (“HIPAA”), Health and Human Services (“HHS”) implemented the Privacy Rule. The Privacy Rule “protects privacy by regulating the ways in which certain medical information may be used by certain entities.” The constitutional right to …

Cybermedicine: Mainstream Medicine By 2020/Crossing Boundaries, 19 J. Marshall J. Computer & Info. L. 557 (2001), Kim Solez, Sheila Moriber Katz
UIC John Marshall Journal of Information Technology & Privacy Law
Cybermedicine, or “the discipline of applying the Internet to medicine,” is rapidly becoming more and more mainstream, and it will ultimately transform medicine completely. Cybermedicine uses “global networking to educate, innovate and communicate in ways that promote medical practice, commerce, scholarship, and empowerment.” Cybermedicine is taking place all over the world and in all walks of life. Currently, Web and e-mail based programs connect doctors to patients, doctors to doctors, and patients to patients with numerous beneficial results. E-mail is particularly important today because not everyone has access to high-speed Internet connections. The impending improvements in technology and the possibilities …

Cybermedicine: How Computing Empowers Doctors And Patients For Better Health Care, 19 J. Marshall J. Computer & Info. L. 589 (2001), William B. Powers
UIC John Marshall Journal of Information Technology & Privacy Law
In Cybermedicine: How Computing Empowers Doctors and Patients for Better Health Care, Dr. Warner V. Slack takes the reader on an interesting journey from the advent of experimental computer usage in the early 1960s, to comprehensive, hospital-wide computing systems in the 1980s, and into the future. As a professor of medicine and psychiatry at Harvard Medical School and co-president of the Center for Clinical Computing and co-director of the Division for Clinical Computing at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Dr. Slack, who has been involved with computers in medicine for some thirty-five years, demonstrates how the use of computers can …
Whose Genetic Information Is It Anyway? A Legal Analysis Of The Effects That Mapping The Human Genome Will Have On Privacy Rights And Genetic Discrimination, 19 J. Marshall J. Computer & Info. L. 609 (2001), Deborah L. Mclochlin
UIC John Marshall Journal of Information Technology & Privacy Law
"There is no information more personal and private than one's genetic information" – one's DNA. Under the Human Genome Project, mapping of the human genetic code is under way. From this mapping of genetic code, information such as the likelihood of developing cancer, diabetes, etc. would certainly become available. Although this information may be helpful to one's health providers, companies and governments may begin to use this information to discriminate individuals based on their genetic predispositions. This article focuses on the current federal legislation while proposing a new federal legislation in light of this great genetic endeavor. Legislation "has always …
The Electronic Communications Privacy Act: Does The Answer To The Internet Information Privacy Problem Lie In A Fifteen Year Old Federal Statute? A Detailed Analysis, 20 J. Marshall J. Computer & Info. L. 1 (2001), Henry M. Cooper
UIC John Marshall Journal of Information Technology & Privacy Law
In 1986, Congress enacted the Electronic Communications Privacy Act ("ECPA") to update and clarify federal privacy protections and standards in light of changes in new technologies. Since, then, however, the Internet has grown immensely and this article discusses whether a new federal legislation is needed to meet the challenge. The author starts his analysis by defining what is "information privacy right." Then, he discusses how this right is been used and misused on the Internet. Following such definition, he discussed the ECPA Title II in detail. He analyses provisions of the ECPA, including section 2701, the definition of "access," sections …

Internet Web Site Jurisdiction, 20 J. Marshall J. Computer & Info. L. 21 (2001), Richard A. Bales, Suzanne Van Wert
UIC John Marshall Journal of Information Technology & Privacy Law
The Internet is here to stay. Consequently, disputes in this cyberspace are heard in courts nationwide, and one of the most fundamental litigation questions is the personal jurisdiction. In this article, the authors discuss the difficulties courts have in defining the degree of interaction between the Web site operator and online users. The authors first discuss the background of how courts tackle the personal jurisdiction issue. Then, as the society leaps into the cyberspace, authors analyze how this great development in technology and communications creates challenges to courts in grounding personal jurisdictional issues. By going through case analyses, authors show …

Effects Of Collection, Transport, And Redeployment Methods On Natural Mortality Of Rangia Cuneata (Mactridae) Used In Biomonitoring Studies, Eugene G. Maurakis, David V. Grimes, William C. Gretes
Effects Of Collection, Transport, And Redeployment Methods On Natural Mortality Of Rangia Cuneata (Mactridae) Used In Biomonitoring Studies, Eugene G. Maurakis, David V. Grimes, William C. Gretes
Virginia Journal of Science
Sporadic, high mortality in test populations of wedge clams (Rangia cuneata) has limited the potential for using this otherwise desirable test organism in biomonitoring studies. To determine whether high mortality was due to ontogenic or experimental variables, a two-phased study was conducted. In phase I, mortality of collected and re-deployed wedge clams, subjected to varying transport conditions, was determined at 7, 14, 21 and 60 days re-deployment. The use of three transport times (1, 2, 3 hr.), two vehicle conditions (open, closed) and three transport treatments (open, closed, iced containers) yielded 18 test groups. Individual test group mortalities …

Hiv Voluntary Counseling And Testing Among Youth Ages 14 To 21: Results From An Exploratory Study In Nairobi, Kenya, And Kampala And Masaka, Uganda, Horizons Program, Kenya Project Partners, Uganda Project Partners
HIV and AIDS
HIV voluntary counseling and testing (VCT) programs increase safe sexual behavior and use of care and support services among adults. By helping clients learn their HIV serostatus and creating a personalized HIV risk-reduction plan, VCT can provide the information and support necessary to change risky behaviors that could lead to HIV infection or transmission. Counseling and a risk-reduction plan are the key features distinguishing VCT from other HIV testing services. VCT has become a widely advocated HIV/AIDS prevention strategy among adults. Sixty percent of all new HIV infections in sub-Saharan Africa, however, occur among young people ages 10–24. Because few …
Community Involvement In The Prevention Of Mother-To-Child Transmission Of Hiv: Insights And Recommendations, Naomi Rutenberg, Mary Lyn Field-Nguer, Laura Nyblade
Community Involvement In The Prevention Of Mother-To-Child Transmission Of Hiv: Insights And Recommendations, Naomi Rutenberg, Mary Lyn Field-Nguer, Laura Nyblade
HIV and AIDS
Mother-to-child transmission is the primary route of HIV infection in children under 15 years of age. Since the beginning of the HIV epidemic, an estimated 5.1 million children worldwide have been infected with HIV. Clinical trials in several countries have shown that mother-to-child transmission of HIV can be greatly reduced through administering antiretroviral therapy to pregnant women. These trials culminated in a recommendation by UNAIDS and its partners in the Interagency Task Team for the Prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission that prevention of perinatal transmission should be a part of the standard package of care for HIV-positive women and their children. …
