Coming Out : Implications For Counselors Working With Gay, Lesbian, And Bisexual Clients, Eric L. Rhodes

Graduate Research Papers

A considerable amount of research has stated that gays and lesbians utilize mental health counseling services at a high rate. Therefore it is very likely that counselors encounter lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) clients. This research focuses on how the sexual orientation of the counselor affects the counseling process when working with LGB clients. In particular, this paper will discuss how the sexual orientation of the counselor facilitates or inhibits client identity development and the coming out process.

Carmen Laforet's Nada: From Bildrungsroman To Wilder(W)Oman, Rosario Nolasco

Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal

The prize-winning Bildungsroman, or coming-of-age novel, Nada ( 1944) by the Spanish writer Carmen Laforet, tells the story of eighteen-year-old Andrea, who, in the aftermath of the Spanish Civil War, fulfills her long awaited dream of traveling to Barcelona to study at its University. But the house on Aribau Street, where her relatives live, turns out to be a microcosm of Spanish social ills. It is filled with the spiritual, moral, physical and emotional decadence typical of Spain in the post-Civil War period of the 1940's, hence the title Nada [Nothing]. Thus Andrea arrives at Aribau, having the appearance of, …

The Effectiveness Of Remedial School Summer Programs: Review Of Literature And Annotated Bibliography, James H. Mcmillan, Dawn Bonanno Fitzelle

MERC Publications

Summer School has been an integral part of American education for many years. Historically, summer school was used to prevent delinquency, to keep children “off the streets.” While this function is still served, the purposes of summer school now include academic enrichment, summer employment for teachers, supervision for children during the summer months for working parents, the mitigation of summer learning loss, and what can be termed remediation of student knowledge and skills to meet higher academic standards (Hirschman, 2000; New York State United Teachers, 1999; The National Assembly of Health and Human Service Organizations, 2000). For some students, summer …

A Code Of One's Own, Joseph P. Tomain

Faculty Articles and Other Publications

A Code of One's Own is an essay exploring the idea that we can learn about professionalism by reflecting on the humanities. The paper is modeled on Virginia Woolf's A Room of One's Own which is a series of lectures in six chapters. The essay uses those chapters to develop the idea that lawyers, through self-reflection and observation, can develop a professional code of their own. The paper was developed through co-teaching a course entitled, Law in Literature and Philosophy as well as by attending the Aspen Institute and the Glenmoor Institute of Justice for the Legal Profession, which are …

An Alternative Use For Bagasse: Stabilizing Agent For Lead Waste, Michael A. Janusa Jan 2001

An Alternative Use For Bagasse: Stabilizing Agent For Lead Waste, Michael A. Janusa

Faculty Publications

Bagasse amounts to one- third of the cane ground and supplies fuel for the generation of steam in raw factories; however, most factories have an excess of bagasse during regular grinding season. Another method for the utilization of bagasse was investigated using bagasse as a stabilizing agent for heavy metal waste solidified /stabilized in cement. Lead nitrate was used as the model heavy me ta l waste with a 10 or 15 per cent lead by weight to cement loading. Samples were cured for 7, 14, and 28 days at 24°C. Samples containing bagasse typically resulted in TCLP extract lead …

Privatizing Social Security, Jerry W. Markham Jan 2001

Privatizing Social Security, Jerry W. Markham

Faculty Publications

The 2000 presidential election focused attention on an idea that has been surfacing for some time--the privatization of Social Security. Although opposition remains fierce, proposals for privatization have been gradually gaining acceptance as the inadequacy of benefits from the present system become more apparent, and bankruptcy becomes certain in the absence of additional onerous funding. Resistance to privatization largely centers on concerns that existing participants will lose their contributions and that private accounts may result in investment losses, which would leave future pensioners penniless. The disability and survivor benefits of the present Social Security system also raise concerns for the …

School of Public Health Faculty Research

To date, four of the eight cases of infection by Staphylococcus aureus with reduced susceptibility to vancomycin (vancomycin-intermediate S. aureus [VISA] or glycopeptideintermediate S. aureus [GISA]) have been reported in the United States (1-3). We report a fifth case of VISA infection in the United States, and the first to occur during home health-care therapy. While all previous VISA strains have been oxacillin resistant, one of the two VISA strains identified in this investigation was oxacillin susceptible.

Playing With Poison: Plutonium Use At Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Peter M. Strauss, Tri-Valley Communities Against A Radioactive Environment Jan 2001

Playing With Poison: Plutonium Use At Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Peter M. Strauss, Tri-Valley Communities Against A Radioactive Environment

Tri-Valley Communities Against a Radioactive Environment (CAREs)

Plutonium is a human-made radioactive substance and a potent poison when inhaled or ingested. It is made in nuclear reactors, and one isotope is the primary explosive material in modern nuclear weapons. This is one of the most toxic radionuclides that Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) works with, and when it is introduced to the environment, it is poisonous in very small doses. It has been used at LLNL to design and fabricate nuclear weapons. Even with the cessation of the "Cold War" in the 1990's, LLNL continues to use plutonium for designing, testing and dismantling nuclear weapons.

Faculty Research & Creative Activity

This study examined radiocesium (137Cs) levels in fish from the vicinity of the Department of Energy's Savannah River Site (SRS), a former nuclear weapons production facility in South Carolina. Fish from the Savannah River were sampled above (upstream), along, and below (downstream) the SRS, and from Steel Creek, a tributary that runs through the SRS. There was some off-site contamination of 137Cs in the Savannah River watershed due to low-level releases from past nuclear production on the SRS. The null hypotheses tested were that there would be no differences in 137Cs levels as a function of location along the river, …
