Crossing Myriad Borders: A Dimensional Analysis Of The Migration And Health Experiences Of Indigenous Oaxacan Women, Sharon Mcguire Phd, Op, Msn, Rn-C Mar 2001

Crossing Myriad Borders: A Dimensional Analysis Of The Migration And Health Experiences Of Indigenous Oaxacan Women, Sharon Mcguire Phd, Op, Msn, Rn-C

Dissertations

The growing feminization of the migration of ethnic indigenous women, such as Mixtecs, Zapotecs and Triquis from the southern Mexican state of Oaxaca, are altering the dynamics and configuration of traditional Mexican migration, making it especially significant for the health professions. Informed by a postcolonial ecofeminist paradigm, this bi-national grounded theory study explored the migration and health experiences of indigenous Oaxacan immigrant/migrant women. Data collection using participant observation and interviewing occurred in Oaxaca, Mexico, along the US-Mexico border, and the interior of California. Dimensional analysis was used as the method of data analysis to generate theoretical understandings of these phenomena. …

Meridians: Feminism, Race, Transnationalism

The end of the twentieth century marks a time of realignments in the cultural and political economies of gender throughout the world. Protests in many places against the World Trade Organization, the International Monetary Fund, and the World Bank have brought together a range of constituencies which had been fairly remote from each other in the previous decade....

Popular Culture, Kitsch As Camp, And Film, Benton Jay Komins Mar 2001

Popular Culture, Kitsch As Camp, And Film, Benton Jay Komins

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article, "Popular Culture, Kitsch as Camp, and Film," Benton Jay Komins argues that at the crossroads of kitsch, between the irresistibly human and total spuriousness (Milan Kundera's and Clement Greenberg's respective definitions), lies the first serious glimmer of camp. Komins evaluates the connections between the phenomenon of kitsch and the phenomenon of camp through a theoretical discussion and the cinematic language of Percy Adlon's Rosalie Goes Shopping (1989-90). Critics like Susan Sontag and Andrew Ross, as well as Adlon's film, ask us to consider if camp is a pretentious expression of kitsch that belongs to the "artsy" demimonde. …

Education In The Age Of The Internet: The Euphoria Of Technology, Lily Kong Mar 2001

Education In The Age Of The Internet: The Euphoria Of Technology, Lily Kong

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

In an earlier commentary (Kong, 1999), I raised the issue of distance from the 'centre' as a barrier to a researcher's participation in the academic circuit, despite the advent of technology and the possibilities it brings of decreasing relative distance. In this commentary, I wish to focus on what technology may and may not do for teaching and learning, and thus to balance some of the overstated claims about the imminent replacement of classrooms and lecture halls with virtual campuses.

United States Air Force Graduate Degrees From 1990 To 2000: A Comparison, Jonathan G. Downing

Theses and Dissertations

Throughout its history, the United States Air Force has been concerned with technical graduate education. In 1947, the Ridenour Report stated the importance and need of Air Force officers with technical graduate degrees. This emphasis has served the Air Force well, but there is concern among senior Air Force leaders that there has been an erosion of these technical skills and graduate education. This research will examine the issues surrounding technical graduate education in the Air Force and will address the possible loss of such technical education. The results of this research provide specific statistical data and analysis on the …

Evaluation Of The Air Force's Alternative Fuel Vehicle Program In Complying With Executive Order 13149, Janette D. Ketchum

Theses and Dissertations

The Air Force must comply with Executive Order (E.O.) 13149, which includes cutting its vehicle fleet's petroleum fuel usage 20 percent by 2005. This thesis examines the Air Force's current alternative fuel vehicle (AFV) program, which is centered around the acquisition and use of compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles, to determine whether it has been effective, and how the AFV program should be tailored to contribute to the Air Force's efforts to comply with E.O. 13149. The results of the study discussed here suggest ways in which the Air Force's AFV program can be modified to increase the program's impact …

Malicious Hackers: A Framework For Analysis And Case Study, Laura J. Kleen Mar 2001

Malicious Hackers: A Framework For Analysis And Case Study, Laura J. Kleen

Theses and Dissertations

Recent years have seen an increase in the number and severity of Information Operations (IO) attacks upon DoD resources. At a higher level, the US as a whole has come under cyber attack by individuals and groups seeking thrills, monetary gain, publicity for their causes, and myriad other goals. This effort develops a first cut model of individual hacker mentality that can be utilized to improve threat assessment, mitigate Information Assurance (IA) vulnerabilities, and improve risk assessment. Further, it is a first step toward automated characterization of Information Warfare (IW) attacks based upon hacker types. All hackers are not the …
