Five-Letter Connoisseur's Ladders, Rex Gooch May 2001

Five-Letter Connoisseur's Ladders, Rex Gooch

Word Ways

For five-letter words, over 60 per cent of words are heterograms, fewer than 2 per cent are isolanos, over a quarter onalosis, and each word has almost 13 neighbours on average--over two per letter. On the other hand, there are not many more than half the number of words to choose from compared to six-letter words. Also it is not possible to have sequential replacement between reversals: from ABCDE to EDCBA would proceed via EBCDE, EDCDE, then EDCDE again, and an implicit conditions of all our ladders is that no word should be repeated, so we will not find reversals …

Park And Ride Feasibility Analysis For The Evansville, Indiana, Metropolitan Area, Brian Howard May 2001

Park And Ride Feasibility Analysis For The Evansville, Indiana, Metropolitan Area, Brian Howard

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Congested roadways and declining air quality standards are major concerns for many communities faced with the challenges of suburban growth and city decay. How each community chooses to fight the problems created by urban sprawl depends greatly on individualized characteristics of the community. Analyzing and understanding unique values of each community provides a sound foundation for measures designed to promote sustainable growth initiatives. The Evansville, Indiana, region is experiencing many of the growing pains associated with increased residential, commercial, and industrial development. Many roadways are currently strained near capacity, and traffic problems are anticipated to increase over the next 20 …

Estimation Of Forest Stand Parameters And Application In Classification And Change Detection Of Forest Cover Types In The Brazilian Amazon Basin, Dengsheng Lu May 2001

Estimation Of Forest Stand Parameters And Application In Classification And Change Detection Of Forest Cover Types In The Brazilian Amazon Basin, Dengsheng Lu

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This research focuses on measurement of forest stand parameters using remote sensing which is applied to classification and change detection of tropical successional and mature forests in selected areas in the Brazilian Amazon Basin. Three study areas, Altamira, Bragantina, and Pedras, each with different biophysical environments, were selected for this research. Previous research has indicated that relationships between selected stand parameters and remotely sensed data are not clearly understood, especially in tropical areas. Rarely has remote sensing research been successfully conducted in quantitative estimation of forest stand parameters (e.g. biomass) and identification of vegetation growth stages. In this research, atmospherically …

The Relationship Between Personality Type And Choice Of College Major, Melissa Pollock May 2001

The Relationship Between Personality Type And Choice Of College Major, Melissa Pollock

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between personality type and choice of college major. Twenty-six students in Psychology and thirty students in Engineering majors were used in this study to determine if there was a statistically significant difference in personality types with regard to major. The subjects were administered the Keirsey Temperament Sorter-II to determine their personality type and the Spearman Rank Order Correlation Coefficient was used to analyze the data. Results indicated that no relationship was found between personality type and major or type and sex. However, there was a significant relationship found between sex …

Phylogenetic Relationships, Taxonomy, And Evolution Of Host Choice In Diadasia (Hymenoptera: Apoidea), Sedonia D. Sipes May 2001

Phylogenetic Relationships, Taxonomy, And Evolution Of Host Choice In Diadasia (Hymenoptera: Apoidea), Sedonia D. Sipes

Biology

I examined the phylogenetic relationships, taxonomy, and evolution of host choice in Diadasia, a genus of New World bees. Diadasia species are particularly interesting because they are considered pollen specialists. Females of each species are believed to provision their nests with pollen from only a few closely related plant taxa. At the same time, the choice of floral hosts within the genus is diverse, and includes five distantly related plant families: Malvaceae, Onagraceae, Convolvulaceae, Asteraceae, and Cactaceae. To estimate phylogenetic relationships within this group, I sequenced ~ 2 kb of the mitochondrial genes CO I and II and tRNA …

Characteristics Of Christian High School Libraries, Wayne Earl Johnson May 2001

Characteristics Of Christian High School Libraries, Wayne Earl Johnson

Theses and Dissertations

For Christian high school libraries the study identified Christian aspects of their philosophy and goals, Internet use and selection policies, criteria for choosing librarians, and materials and services available. The sample was all the high school libraries with a librarian in a school with an enrollment of 300 or more students as of December, 1999. All the schools were members of the Association of Christian Schools International for the 1999-2000 school year. Four hundred thirty-three questionnaires were mailed to the high school librarians. One hundred sixty-eight usable questionnaires were returned. The study concluded that Christian high school librarians recognized Jesus …

1. The Hopeton Earthworks: An Interim Report

For anyone with an interest in North American archeology, Ross County, Ohio, has long been a special place. The combination of a great concentration of mounds and earthworks, along with a long history of intensive archeological research, has fascinated archeologists and the general public for more than a century. Through the efforts of legendary archeologists such as E.G. Squier and E.H. Davis, Warren King Moorehead, and William C. Mills, certain sites in Ross County have become very well known.

Recognition resulting from research at these sites has sometimes led to their being intentionally …

Computational Evolutionary Linguistics, Tracy Vancort May 2001

Computational Evolutionary Linguistics, Tracy Vancort

HMC Senior Theses

Languages and species both evolve by a process of repeated divergences, which can be described with the branching of a phylogenetic tree or phylogeny. Taking advantage of this fact, it is possible to study language change using computational tree building techniques developed for evolutionary biology. Mathematical approaches to the construction of phylogenies fall into two major categories: character based and distance based methods. Character based methods were used in prior work in the application of phylogenetic methods to the Indo-European family of languages by researchers at the University of Pennsylvania. Discussion of the limitations of character-based models leads to a …

Two Necessities Of Poetry: Plenitude And Exuberance, Marianne Rogoff May 2001

Two Necessities Of Poetry: Plenitude And Exuberance, Marianne Rogoff

Collected Faculty Scholarship

"Alicia Ostriker advocates a 'poetics of ardor,' one which is not detached, objective, or merely intellectual, instead a poetry that embraces a big-hearted and practical definition of what erotic means. Dancing at the Devil’s Party is mostly about women’s poetry but Ostriker also reminds us of the wide-reaching sensuality of Whitman, Hopkins, Keats, and other sexy male forebears who permitted love to appear in their work."

The Effects Of A Currency Union On Trade: The Case Of The Euro-System, Paul M. Clark May 2001

The Effects Of A Currency Union On Trade: The Case Of The Euro-System, Paul M. Clark

Student Work

The decision of a preferential trading agreement (PTA) to form a currency union adds a new dimension to the debate over whether PTA’s are a step forward or backwards in the quest for world wide free trade. This paper looks at the effects the introduction of the euro has had on trade within the European Union (EU). Using trade data for the twenty-three industrialized countries as classified by the International Monetary Fund, ordinary least-squares was applied to a gravity model of bilateral trade. Independent variables included: gross domestic product (GDP), per capita GDP, a distance measure, adjacency, common language, membership …

A Two-Level Analysis Of Israel’S Strategy Toward Peace During The 1990s, Shlomo Mizrahi, Abraham Mehrez, Arye Naor

Peace and Conflict Studies

This paper suggests a two-level game analysis of Israel’s strategy toward peace during the 1990s. The paper shows how various paradoxes in Israeli society create domestic obstacles and internal opposition that weaken Israel’s bargaining position toward neighboring countries. Treating domestic parameters in these countries as a given, we argue that Israeli leaders can hardly use this weakness to manipulate information in the bargaining process, because neighboring countries can observe Israel’s internal processes. Therefore, attempts by Israeli leaders to create the impression that they are willing to adopt a conflictual approach towards neighboring polities, especially the Palestinians, without actually creating the …
