1998 Debris Flows Near The Yakima River, Kittitas County, Washington—Some Geomorphic Implications, Martin R. Kaatz

Geography Faculty Scholarship

The geomorphic consequences of debris flows and their asso- ciated storms have been documented in many parts of the United States. Few, if any, have been studied and documented in central Washington. The importance of recurrent debris flows in sculpting Washington landscapes has not been generally recognized compared to other processes. Arid and semi-arid regions are particularly vulnerable to debris flows triggered by sudden intense thunderstorms. Most such areas are sparsely populated and eyewitnesses are uncommon. By contrast, semi-arid central Washington is relatively well popu- lated, and there are likely to be people who have observed the storms. Such witnesses …

Serving The Homeless: Evaluating The Effectiveness Of Homeless Shelter Services, George M. Glisson, Robert L. Fischer, Bruce A. Thyer

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

The effects of homeless assistance services at the local level are tremendously difficult to ascertain. In this study, a four-month sample of homeless persons served by a local homeless shelter and case management program were contacted nine to eleven months after receiving services. The findings suggest that the program had some initial success in assisting the homeless clients to locate housing within the first year after leaving the shelter. However, the housing costs paid by these formerly homeless were quite high, with nearly three-quarters of them spending forty percent or more of their income on housing.

Km In Wipro Infotech : A Case Review, Anurag Srivastava, N Rajendhiran, Nandini Prasanna, Satish Prasad

IIMB Management Review

In recent times knowledge management has become a critical initiative for organisations. According to Tom Stewart1, an organisation that is not managing knowledge is not paying attention to business. Every company needs to answer the questions What do we know? and Where is the knowledge? Companies around the world have begun to make real business contributions through practices associated with knowledge management. Practices centred around KM have started yielding substantial results in global companies like Buckman Laboratories, Arthur Andersen, Microsoft, E&Y, Chevron, HP, BP Amoco, Booz Allen. More and more companies are initiating KM in their organisations to gain competitive …

Écriture Apatrlde : Le Langage De L'Exil Dans Le Jardin Perdu D'Andrée Chedid, Marlène Barsoum

Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature

The fertile territory of exile, inhabited and explored by displaced writers, has yielded myriad personal narratives. In this article, I discuss the strategy that Andrée Chedid chooses to broach in Le jardin perdu. Instead of relating a personal account of her own uprooting, she recreates the archetypal story of exile, that of Adam and Eve banished from paradise. By imagining what would have been their fears and hopes as they faced the unknown, she evokes the typical emotions of all exiles. By removing the story of displacement from the temporal and personal spheres, she brings it into the realm …

Lay Of The Land: Knowing The Terrain Aided Grant's Capture Of Vicksburg, Kent Hughes & Arthur L. Bradshaw Butts

Civil War Book Review

Stand Dynamics And Disturbance History Of Five Oak -Dominated Old -Growth Stands In The Unglaciated Appalachian Plateau, James Spencer Rentch Dec 2001

Stand Dynamics And Disturbance History Of Five Oak -Dominated Old -Growth Stands In The Unglaciated Appalachian Plateau, James Spencer Rentch

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Stand dynamics and disturbance histories of five eastern, oak-dominated old-growth stands were investigated using ecological field sampling techniques, dendrochronologogical methods, and a review of historical resources of original forest composition and patterns of human and natural disturbance. Witness tree tallies from 18th century land surveys show that presettlement forests in the study areas were oak-dominated forests. Quercus alba was, at minimum, twice as abundant as Q. velutina, the second ranked species. Acer saccharum and Fagus grandifolia were among the top ten ranked species at each site; however their importance value was consistently less than one-third the value for Q. alba. …

A Geostatistical Screening Strategy For Assessing Contaminated Sediment, Yasuyo K. Makido Dec 2001

A Geostatistical Screening Strategy For Assessing Contaminated Sediment, Yasuyo K. Makido

Masters Theses

Many environmental problems involve the collection and interpretation of spatial data. Screening methods attempt to develop efficient test procedures to determine the presence and absence of contaminants in samples. Screening methods can reduce monitoring costs and effectively identify contamination problems. Adaptive sampling has the flexibility to adjust for follow-up sampling based on the observed patterns in the population. Geostatistical method is employed for the adaptive sampling scheme. Geostatistics are statistical methodologies that use spatial coordinates to help formulate models used in estimation and prediction.

This study seeks to map Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs) concentrations in sediment in Lake Allegan and Morrow …

"Black Behind The Ears" — And Up Front Too? Dominicans In The Black Mosaic, Ginetta Candelario Dr Dec 2001

"Black Behind The Ears" — And Up Front Too? Dominicans In The Black Mosaic, Ginetta Candelario Dr

Sociology: Faculty Publications

This article considers the formation and representation of Washington, D.C.'s Dominican community in the Anacostia Museum's 1994 -1995 exhibit, Black Mosaic: Community, Race and Ethnicity Among Black Immigrants in D.C. The exhibit successfully pointed to the extensive historical presence of African Diaspora peoples in Latin America and explored the development of subsequent Diaspora from those communities into Washington, D.C. The case of Dominican immigrants to D.C., however, illustrates the continued privileging of a U.S.- or Anglo-centric ideation of African-American history and identity. I argue that a more accurate and politically useful formulation would call for an understanding that the African …

Oikumene: La Geografía Híbrida De El Rey Gallinato De Andrés De Claramonte, Frederick A. De Armas Dec 2001

Oikumene: La Geografía Híbrida De El Rey Gallinato De Andrés De Claramonte, Frederick A. De Armas

Teatro: Revista de Estudios Escénicos / A Journal of Theater Studies

The Central And East European Automotive Industry Restructuring, Petr Pavlinek

Geography and Geology Faculty Publications

have come to the Slavic Research Center of the Hokkaido University to study the profound changes that have been taking place in the automotive industry of Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) since 1990. My work is based on several field research visits to the Czech Republic that included in depth interviews conducted with key informants (plant managers, trade union leaders and ministry officials) in car factories, car component plants and governmental institutions. The automotive industry restructuring in the 1990s involved a number of complex issues that my research addresses, such as the effects of price and trade liberalization in the …

The Effects Of Regional Planning On Suburuban Tokyo Metropolitan Areas, Michael Corbett Dec 2001

The Effects Of Regional Planning On Suburuban Tokyo Metropolitan Areas, Michael Corbett

Master's Projects

In the current economic downturn that Japan is experiencing, there are a number of issues concerning Tokyo suburban areas that face Japanese planners. Among them are the effects of the historical movements of the population into what is now the Tokyo Metropolitan Areah the transfer of power to local governments^; land availability and social problems caused by the changing demographics of an aging Japanese society in those areas. Unfortunately, during the rapid urbanization spurred by necessary development after World War II little thought was given to quality of life issues such as building design or area plans. Instead, emphasis was …

(Post)Feminism, Transnationalism, The Maternal Body, And Michèle Roberts, Ayako Mizuo Dec 2001

(Post)Feminism, Transnationalism, The Maternal Body, And Michèle Roberts, Ayako Mizuo

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her paper "(Post)Feminism, Transnationalism, the Maternal Body, and Michèle Roberts," Ayako Mizuo argues that the question and problematics of feminism have diversified over the last few decades. Diverse and competing voices have been, nonetheless, incorporated into the paradigm of an equality and difference sexual dichotomy. Further, recent discussions about feminism suggest the problematization of gender differences. Consequently, exponents of postfeminism are compelled to ask what comes next? Mizuo urges that the issue of the tangibility of the body acquires a particular relevance within this context and that thus the ultimate question is how the site of the maternal body …

Aimé Césaire And Gestures Toward The Universal, Gary Leising Dec 2001

Aimé Césaire And Gestures Toward The Universal, Gary Leising

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his paper, "Aimé Césaire and Gestures toward the Universal," Gary Leising argues that Césaire's Notebook of a Return to the Native Land presents a speaker struggling with his own identity, torn between a double consciousness of his black African heritage and his French-European education. This dichotomy appears in the poem in terms of his perceptions of his ancestry as well as in symbols of the masculine and feminine in the surrounding landscape. For the speaker, the African appears as the "real" around him, while the European is an "absent presence," and he confronts the two at the poem's climax, …

Dutch Women In New Netherland And New York In The Seventeenth Century, Michael Eugene Gherke Dec 2001

Dutch Women In New Netherland And New York In The Seventeenth Century, Michael Eugene Gherke

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The European settlers who emigrated to America in the seventeenth century were decidedly patriarchal. Nevertheless, significant cultural differences in expressions of patriarchy among them existed. Specifically, the Dutch of New Netherland defined the gendered roles of women differently than did other European cultures. More than deputy-husbands, but less than full partner, seventeenth-century Dutch women in New Netherland were integral to the survival and promotion of their families' interests and preservation of the colony. English expropriation of New Netherland in 1664 and permanent acquisition in 1674 inaugurate a process of patriarchal acculturation that over time submerged the roles of Dutch women. …
