Levels Of Interoperability In Coalition Systems, Holly A. H. Handley, Alexander H. Levis, Michel Bares Jan 2001

Levels Of Interoperability In Coalition Systems, Holly A. H. Handley, Alexander H. Levis, Michel Bares

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Faculty Publications

Systems of different command centers that are brought together in a coalition operation must have some level of interoperability in order to work together. Bares [2000] has introduced a formalism of three interoperability domains that describe the ability of the systems to define their own level of interoperability within the coalition by assessing their own and the other systems’ ability to interact on actions of the coalition. The lowest domain, interconnectivity, reflects the ability to exchange messages; this level must already have been achieved in order for the systems to participate in the coalition. The second domain, interoperability, reflects a …

A Guide To Resources On Careers In Foreign And International Law, Robert H. Hu Jan 2001

A Guide To Resources On Careers In Foreign And International Law, Robert H. Hu

Faculty Articles

Law librarians are often asked by law students and even practicing attorneys, “How do I begin a career in foreign and international law practice?” The student or attorney asking this question frequently is seeking recommendations for books, articles, or other information resources on the topic. The same situation arises in a law school’s career services office. For these reasons, a guide has been compiled to help law librarians and placement officials assist individuals who are interested in pursuing career opportunities in foreign and international law practice.

This guide is divided into four sections: Perspectives on International Law Practice, Membership Organizations, …

Predicting Residential Satisfaction: A Comparative Case Study, James J. Potter, Jean L. Chicoine, Kathryn E. Speicher

Architecture Program: Faculty Scholarly and Creative Activity

This is a comparative case study that focuses on resident satisfaction in three buildings renovated for housing. A survey based on environment-behavior factors that can contribute to resident satisfaction was developed and distributed to the buildings' residents. Residents in fifty-two percent (52.5%) of the units in the three buildings responded (N = 64). Index variables used were: management, perception, wayfinding, safety. comfort. and adequacy. There was a significant relationship between resident satisfaction and age for one building. Safety and perception were significant for all buildings. Safety, perception and comfort were significant in different ways for each of the three buildings.

The Humanities In Action : A Report To The People Of Texas, Texas Council For The Humanities

Documents from the State of Texas-Archive

The humanities are more than a list of academic disciplines. They are the means through which we learn to appreciate the diversity of our cultural heritage and that of others, the tools through which we learn to think critically, to understand and to shape the complex world in which we live, to develop our moral and aesthetic sensibilities, and to examine wisely the public issues that shape our everyday lives. But in this talk of programs and projects, global and local issues, history, literature, and cultural traditions, let us celebrate the human ties which inform the public humanities. This report …

Introduction To The Great Gatsby (Wordsworth Editions), Guy J. Reynolds Jan 2001

Introduction To The Great Gatsby (Wordsworth Editions), Guy J. Reynolds

Department of English: Faculty Publications

The 'constant flicker' of the American scene

Why is The Great Gatsby such a quintessential twentieth-century novel? After mixed reviews and a slow start in sales, Fitzgerald's 1925 novel has moved to the centre of literary history, to the extent that to many readers this is the modern American novel. Gatsby is widely loved, and has achieved the unusual status of appealing to both that mythical creature the 'Common Reader' and an academic audience. The novel's stature has increased exponentially with age, and it is probably regarded with more fondness and read with greater critical sophistication today than in the …

Telling Wonders: Ethnographic And Political Discourse In The Work Of Herodotus, Rosaria Vignolo Munson

Classics Faculty Works

Herodotus, the worldwide ethnographer and historian of the Persian Wars, provides a striking demonstration of how the account of past events of national history and the description of foreign peoples participate in the rhetoric of shaping attitudes about the present. Telling Wonders: Ethnographic and Political Discourse in the Work of Herodotus studies the narrative of the Histories in order to uncover the political message communicated to a Greek audience of the fifth century B.C.

Reading Changes In Family Support Through Regional Development In China, Ge Lin Jan 2001

Reading Changes In Family Support Through Regional Development In China, Ge Lin

Regional Research Institute Working Papers

This article examines the degree to which the traditional family support system would be reshaped by the modernization and industrialization from a geo-developmental perspective. In particular, we examine the impact of rapid social changes and economic developments on family support for older parents in contemporary urban China to assess trends that might lead to a different path from the western style of old-age support purported by modernization theory. Based on the 1992 Survey on China’s Support Systems for the Elderly, the study divides the sample from three levels of economic development, which in turn, are used as proxies for developmental …
