A Demographic Approach To Race And Ethnicity In Metropolitan And Non-Metropolitan Regions Of Arkansas, 1990 And 1999, Todd W. Hodgson, Frank L. Farmer, Wayne P. Miller, Donald D. Voth

AAES Research Reports and Research Bulletins

This manuscript provides an empirical portrait of emergent trends in the growth, distribution, and racial and ethnic composition of Arkansas’ resident population. Particular attention is given to variation in the racial and ethnic composition of the estimated population among different regions of the state. During the 1990’s, racial and ethnic diversity increased statewide due in large part to Hispanic population growth in all regions. Black population growth was greatest in central Arkansas while Asian and Native American population growth increased most rapidly in the northwest metropolitan regions of the state. Overall, both metropolitan and non-metropolitan Arkansas communities have a more …

Drawing A Line In The Congressional Sand Between Congress And The Foreign Citizen "Cybersquatter", Heather A. Forrest Feb 2001

Drawing A Line In The Congressional Sand Between Congress And The Foreign Citizen "Cybersquatter", Heather A. Forrest

William & Mary Bill of Rights Journal

"Cybersquatting" on the Internet is a phenomenon that has warranted an amendment to the Trademark Dilution Act of the Lanham Act. The undisputed omnipresence of the Internet, as well as the boundless possibilities of infringement activity on the Internet, has made such an amendment inevitable, as well as necessary. Congress' power to regulate trademark infringement activity, whether traditionally or on the Internet, relies on the Commerce Clause of the United States Constitution. The author asserts that participation in the Internet domain name registration process itself does not constitute the "commercial activity in commerce" requirement of the Trademark Dilution Act; in …

Learning To Be A Lawyer: Transition Into Practice Pilot Project, Sally Evans Winkler, C. Ronald Ellington, John T. Marshall Feb 2001

Learning To Be A Lawyer: Transition Into Practice Pilot Project, Sally Evans Winkler, C. Ronald Ellington, John T. Marshall

Popular Media

"A law student, upon graduation, is not a finished product," a respected law school dean observed. A practicing lawyer might add: "A lawyer, upon passage of the Bar examination, is not a finished product." To determine ways new lawyers can be helped in moving up the steep learning curve that separates law students from competent professionals, the State Bar of Georgia, through its Committee on the Standards of the Profession, is conducting a Transition into Practice Pilot Project.

Social Norms And The Time Allocation Of Women's Labor In Burkina Faso, Michael Kevane, Bruce Wydick Feb 2001

Social Norms And The Time Allocation Of Women's Labor In Burkina Faso, Michael Kevane, Bruce Wydick

Economics

This paper proposes that major determinants of allocation of women's time are social norms that regulate the economic activities of women. Our emphasis on norms contrasts with approaches that view time allocation as determined by household-level economic variables. Using data from Burkina Faso, we show that social norms significantly explain differences in patterns of time allocation between two ethnic groups: Mossi and Bwa. Econometric results show women from the two groups exhibiting different responses to changes in farm capital. Implications are that policies that foster changes in social norms may have more permanent effects on altering women's behavior.

U.S. Army War College Guide To Strategy, Joseph R. Cerami Dr., James F. Holcomb Colonel Feb 2001

U.S. Army War College Guide To Strategy, Joseph R. Cerami Dr., James F. Holcomb Colonel

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

For more than 3 decades, the U.S. Army War College (USAWC) Department of National Security and Strategy has faced the challenge of educating future strategic leaders on the subject of national security, or grand strategy. Fitting at the top of an officer's or government official's career-long professional development program, this challenge has been to design a course on strategy that incorporates its many facets in a short period of time, all within the 1-year, senior service college curriculum. To do this, a conceptual approach has provided the framework to think about strategy formulation. The purpose of this volume is to …

Assessment Of Contemporary Arctic River Runoff Based On Observational Discharge Records, Richard B. Lammers, Alexander I. Shiklomanov, Charles J. Vorosmarty, Balazs M. Fekete, Bruce J. Peterson Feb 2001

Assessment Of Contemporary Arctic River Runoff Based On Observational Discharge Records, Richard B. Lammers, Alexander I. Shiklomanov, Charles J. Vorosmarty, Balazs M. Fekete, Bruce J. Peterson

Faculty Publications

We describe the contemporary hydrography of the pan‐Arctic land area draining into the Arctic Ocean, northern Bering Sea, and Hudson Bay on the basis of observational records of river discharge and computed runoff. The Regional Arctic Hydrographic Network data set, R‐ArcticNET, is presented, which is based on 3754 recording stations drawn from Russian, Canadian, European, and U.S. archives. R‐ArcticNET represents the single largest data compendium of observed discharge in the Arctic. Approximately 73% of the nonglaciated area of the pan‐Arctic is monitored by at least one river discharge gage giving a mean gage density of 168 gages per 106 km2. …

China And The Globalization Of Ir Theory: Discussion Of 'Building International Relations Theory With Chinese Characteristics', William A. Callahan Feb 2001

China And The Globalization Of Ir Theory: Discussion Of 'Building International Relations Theory With Chinese Characteristics', William A. Callahan

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

This essay examines current developments in International Relations theory in China. First it comments on Song Xinning's essay, agreeing that IR theory in China is limited by ideology, the dominance of policy-oriented research, and the state. But rather than seeing culture ('IR theory with Chinese characteristics') as a problem that can be solved by a more scientific approach to IR theory, the essay argues that the scientism of realism and IPE has similar problems. Thus the essay switches from the universals of science to the contingency of interpretation to understand global politics, drawing on recent books which combine IPE with …

Environmental Science In The New Millennium : A Model To Give Structure And Guidance, James M. Lipuma Jan 2001

Environmental Science In The New Millennium : A Model To Give Structure And Guidance, James M. Lipuma

Dissertations

This work proposes a template for successful interdisciplinary Environmental Science (EVSQ) programs at four-year American learning institutions. The first conclusion reached is that there is no one "perfect" program. Only by identifying clear goals for EVSC can programs improve. It was determined that a clear definition of EVSC and mission statements related to these definitions are necessary first steps to allow improvement to occur. One major outcome of the work is the educational model built to understand EVSC education. The model identifies methods by which the goals and objectives of EVSC can be identified and accomplished. The research found that …
