A Geographic Analysis Of Vegetation Deterioration In The Tabuk Area, Saudi Arabia, Khalid Musallam Alharbi Jan 2001

A Geographic Analysis Of Vegetation Deterioration In The Tabuk Area, Saudi Arabia, Khalid Musallam Alharbi

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Vegetation deterioration has received an increasing amount of attention in the last few decades. It is considered a main indicator of land degradation processes. The Tabuk area, located in the northwest region of Saudi Arabia, has experienced vegetation deterioration as the major facet of land degradation processes. The study utilized Landsat-5 TM data, professional agricultural reports, and topographic maps, supported with intensive fieldwork to monitor vegetation deterioration and its causes and consequences. The data used in this study has been analyzed using remotely sensed methods by pre-processing data, visual interpretation, and Normalized Differences Vegetation Index (NDVI). Climatic analysis also applied, …

Differential Detection Of Bartonella Species And Strains In Cat Scratch Disease Diagnostics By Polymerase Chain Reaction Amplification Of 16s Ribosomal Rna Gene, Ronald A. Tapp, Alma F. Roy, Richard E. Corstvet, Vincent L. Wilson Jan 2001

Differential Detection Of Bartonella Species And Strains In Cat Scratch Disease Diagnostics By Polymerase Chain Reaction Amplification Of 16s Ribosomal Rna Gene, Ronald A. Tapp, Alma F. Roy, Richard E. Corstvet, Vincent L. Wilson

Faculty Publications

Cat scratch disease (CSD) has been difficult to diagnose in animals because of the protracted clinical course of infection and the quiescent phases when the microbial culprit lies dormant. The causative agent in CSD appears to be multiple species and strains of Bartonella. Using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) techniques for amplification of highly variable regions of the 16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) gene sequence, a very sensitive species- and strain-specific assay for CSD-causing Bartonella species was developed. PCR primers were designed to specifically amplify the 16S rRNA gene of Bartonella species but not of other microbial pathogens. This initial PCR was …

Legislative Innovation In State Brownfields Redevelopment Programs, Heidi Gorovitz Robertson Jan 2001

Legislative Innovation In State Brownfields Redevelopment Programs, Heidi Gorovitz Robertson

Law Faculty Articles and Essays

States throughout the country have created legislation and administrative programs to encourage the cleanup and redevelopment of urban brownfield land. In part, these efforts respond to the federal government's recent focus on the issue. However, leadership in method and approach has come, not from the federal government, but from the states. States have approached the cleanup and redevelopment of contaminated land in a variety of ways, some choosing to create voluntary cleanup programs, others imposing mandatory cleanup programs, and still others using combinations of these approaches. Regardless of method, however, the push to clean brownfield land is grounded in a …

Endophytic Fungi In Canada Wild Rye In Natural Grasslands, Mary Ann Vinton, Emily S. Kathol, Kenneth P. Vogel, Andrew A. Hopkins Jan 2001

Endophytic Fungi In Canada Wild Rye In Natural Grasslands, Mary Ann Vinton, Emily S. Kathol, Kenneth P. Vogel, Andrew A. Hopkins

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Some grasses harbor endophytic fungi living in intercellular spaces in the leaves, stems and reproductive organs. The fungi can dramatically affect the physiology and ecology of plants. For example, fungi may produce toxins that deter herbivores and they may alter the water status of the plant to increase drought tolerance. The distribution of fungal infection in natural plant populations is unknown for many host species. We investigated the occurrence of endophytic fungi in Elymus canadensis L. (Canada wild rye) from 13 remnant prairie sites in the midwest and 23 sites in the southern Great Plains. Collections of plant tissue came …

The Gap Between Informational Goals And The Duty To Gather Information: Challenging Piecemealed Review Under The Washington State Environmental Policy Act, Keith H. Hirokawa Jan 2001

The Gap Between Informational Goals And The Duty To Gather Information: Challenging Piecemealed Review Under The Washington State Environmental Policy Act, Keith H. Hirokawa

Seattle University Law Review

In 1971, Washington enacted the State Environmental Policy Act (SEPA), which requires agencies to make a threshold determination of whether a project is likely to significantly affect the environment and, where such impacts are likely, to produce an environmental impact statement (EIS). One problem faced in implementing the goals of SEPA is the practice of "piecemealing." Part I of this Article introduces the piecemeal problem by describing three common piecemeal situations. The first situation occurs when a project proposal is divided into such small parts that the environmental impacts from each individual part appear insignificant and the impact from the …

The Likely Cause Of Extinction Of The Tree Snail Orthalicus Reses Reses (Say), E.A. Forys, A. Quistorff, Craig R. Allen, D.P. Wojcik Jan 2001

The Likely Cause Of Extinction Of The Tree Snail Orthalicus Reses Reses (Say), E.A. Forys, A. Quistorff, Craig R. Allen, D.P. Wojcik

Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit: Staff Publications

The Stock Island tree snail, Orthalicus reses reses, went extinct in its native range in the Florida Keys in 1992. Fortunately, O. r. reses has been introduced elsewhere and further reintroductions are currently planned. Before these reintroductions are implemented, it is important to try and determine which factors were most likely to have caused the decline and extinction. While habitat destruction was probably the ultimate reason why there were so few tree snails, it is likely that an interaction of habitat fragmentation and the invasion of an exotic predator caused the final decline that lead to the extinction in …
