Aids In Ontario: An Examination Of Mobility Patterns And Spatial Variations (Immune Deficiency), Holly Nadean Innes Jan 2001

Aids In Ontario: An Examination Of Mobility Patterns And Spatial Variations (Immune Deficiency), Holly Nadean Innes

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The primary objective of this thesis is to examine mobility patterns of people with Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) in terms of where they go for testing, treatment and support. The secondary objective is to examine and describe spatial variations in the prevalence of AIDS among the forty-two Public Health Units (PHUs) of Ontario, and to explain the processes underlying these patterns. An assessment of the spatial perspective will be completed utilizing two contributors. The first employs the process of interviewing the AIDS Educators at the Ontario PHUs and capturing their impressions as to what is occurring within their areas regarding …

The Impact Of Large Plant Closure On Small Firm Creation In Kitchener, Ontario, 1987 To 1998, Christopher William Charman Jan 2001

The Impact Of Large Plant Closure On Small Firm Creation In Kitchener, Ontario, 1987 To 1998, Christopher William Charman

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The impact of restructuring in the manufacturing sector of Kitchener, Ontario has been felt in many ways. For those who were displaced, the alternatives for re-employment were limited. In some cases, workers have turned to self employment and small firm creation as a source of income. This study attempts to quantify the business dynamic at work in the Manufacturing and Business Service sectors in Kitchener between 1987 and 1998. Using a database developed from the Kitchener Business Directory the process of manufacturing loss and service industry increase is studied. The examination follows new business creation, the change in activity within …

Recreational Birdwatching, Empire, And Gender In Southern Ontario, 1791-1886, Kirsten Aletta Greer Jan 2001

Recreational Birdwatching, Empire, And Gender In Southern Ontario, 1791-1886, Kirsten Aletta Greer

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

This thesis addresses the historical and cultural development of the recreational birdwatching in southern Ontario, 1791-1886, and the efforts of empire and gender on birdwatchers’ identities and ideas about birds. By deconstructing recreational ornithological discourse, I suggest that recreational birdwatching reproduced the imposition of British colonial rule in Canada, together with condescension towards aboriginal peoples and non-British immigrants; and the reinforcement of British, middle-class, gendered identities in southern Ontario. This research therefore shows that recreational ornithological texts provide a medium to deconstruct the impact of birdwatching on people’s lives in their gendered approach to the activity.

An Assessment Of The Role And Impact Of Non-Governmental Organizations (Ngos) In The Management And Sustainability Of Local Environmental Resources: A Case Study Of Nanun, Ghana, Iddrisu Adam Jan 2001

An Assessment Of The Role And Impact Of Non-Governmental Organizations (Ngos) In The Management And Sustainability Of Local Environmental Resources: A Case Study Of Nanun, Ghana, Iddrisu Adam

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

NGOs have been heralded as the vehicle of choice for aid delivery by international organizations lice the World Bank and the United Nations and also by western governments, especially in the last two decades. This is a tacit acceptance of their role as development agents in the South. However, no substantive research has been done to find out if these NGOs are indeed contributing to the better management of local environmental resources. This research sets out to examine the role and impact of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in the management and sustainability of local environmental resources in rural Ghana. What makes …

Weathering Crust Processes On Melting Glacier Ice (Alberta, Canada), Corinne Joanne Schuster Jan 2001

Weathering Crust Processes On Melting Glacier Ice (Alberta, Canada), Corinne Joanne Schuster

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

This thesis examines the relationship between the energy balance and hydrology of a glacier at the ice surface interface during the melt season. Experimental sub-catchments were established on the ablation area of the Peyto Glacier, Alberta, Canada, during the summers of 1994, 1995 and 1997. These sub-catchments were equipped with meteorological and hydrological instrumentation to examine relationships in the surface layer. Specifically, the development of a phenomenon known as the weathering crust is followed by examining the ratio between potential surface lowering (calculated from energy available for melt) and actual surface lowering (as measured in the field). This enables an …

American Engaged Buddhism And New Social Movement Theory, Mariah Magdalene Martin Jan 2001

American Engaged Buddhism And New Social Movement Theory, Mariah Magdalene Martin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

In this thesis, I document the existence of the American Engaged Buddhist (AEB) social movement by describing its history, organizations, and actions. Then, I utilize AEB's example to address unresolved debates within NSM theory, including wherein newness is to be found, whether NSMs are reactive and/or progressive, the non-economic basis of group solidarity, and the emphasis on cultural rather than political change. I place considerable focus on the creation and maintenance of the bodhisattva identity and the cohesiveness of the sangha (religious community). Through a qualitative case study, I find that the movement is organized around religious beliefs rather than …

Photodegradation Of Propiconazole Fungicide By Ultraviolet Radiation, Omar R. Martinez Jan 2001

Photodegradation Of Propiconazole Fungicide By Ultraviolet Radiation, Omar R. Martinez

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

The photodegradation of propiconazole (1-{[2-(2,4-dichlorophenyl)-4-propyl-1,3-dioxolan-2-yl]methyl}-1 H-1,2,4-triazole), a systemic fungicide, by ultraviolet radiation has been studied. After 12 hours of continuous irradiation, propiconazole undergoes degradation in aqueous solution. The process requires the presence of oxygen and continuous agitation. Similarly, propiconazole undergoes degradation in organic solvents as well (methanol, hexane).

Plant Colonization On A Newly Restored Floodplain Of The Kissimmee River, Florida, Janet R. Pinneo Jan 2001

Plant Colonization On A Newly Restored Floodplain Of The Kissimmee River, Florida, Janet R. Pinneo

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

This study focused on whether wetland vegetation could become re-established on a newly restored floodplain of the Kissimmee River if seasonal floodplain inundation were re-established. The wetland was re-created by back-filling a section of the Kissimmee Canal and diverting water flow into remnant river meanders. Seasonal flooding did occur during the study period. There were no other interventions to promote wetland plant growth. Ten vegetation quadrats were stratified between the back-filled canal and adjacent floodplain. These quadrats were monitored for 11 months. Of the 68 plant species recorded, 72% were obligate, facultative wetland or aquatic species. Diversity, richness, and percent …
