Working For The Environment: Pathways To Environmental Careers, Carol Aline Devault
Theses Digitization Project
Fifteen professionals in a variety of environmental occupations in the United States were interviewed in a structured, open-ended format. Job profiles were developed from the interviews. The philosophy of these environmental professionals is expressed in their own words and offers insights into influences upon career choice, professional training and personal fulfillment. In addition, environmental related career activity guides were developed to help students and their parents and teachers gain an awareness of the occupations available in this field.

Where Have All The Species Gone?: An Interdisciplinary Unit On Endangered Species, Rebecca Joan Goldberg
Theses Digitization Project
Where Have All the Species Gone? is an interdisciplinary thematic unitdesigned to educate, interest, and inspire students to seek solutions to the problems associated with the causes for endangered species. The lessons cover the areas of mathematics, language arts, American history, science, art and technology. The unit can be taught in its whole over three to four weeks or individual lessons can be infused into existing middle/junior high school curriculum throughout the school year.

The Gray Wolves (Canis Lupus) Of British Columbia’S Coastal Rainforests, Chris T. Darimont, Paul C. Paquet
Biogeography and Ecological Opportunity Collection
The mainland coast of British Columbia (BC) is a remote area that is comparatively free from human-caused disturbance. However, concerns about current and anticipated increases in industrial forestry activity have prompted conservation biologists to investigate the biota in this understudied region. We were commissioned by the Raincoast Conservation Society to study coastal wolves so that information could be incorporated into ongoing conservation planning and education efforts. The summer of 2000 marked the pilot season of a multi-year research project. Our team spent more than 240 person days in the field during the summer and fall seasons. We surveyed 18 mainland …
Sclerosponges: Potential High-Resolution Recorders Of Marine Paleotemperatures, Gary B. Hughes, Charles W. Thayer
Sclerosponges: Potential High-Resolution Recorders Of Marine Paleotemperatures, Gary B. Hughes, Charles W. Thayer
Statistics
Sclerosponges have great potential as seawater temperature recorders. These animals precipitate their skeletons in carbon and oxygen isotopic equilibrium with the surrounding seawater (Druffel and Benavides, 1986). Their skeletons also display chemical properties that vary directly with changes in environmental conditions. Lack of photosynthetic symbionts allows sclerosponges to live below the photic zone, providing the potential to investigate past marine conditions beyond the range of corals. Individual sponges live for several centuries, preserving archives of pre-and postindustrial seawater variations within single specimens (Hartman and Reiswig, 1980). Cross-correlation of successively older specimens could yield up to 2000 years of marine history. …

Lessons From The Motorized Migrations, David H. Ellis, George F. Gee, Kent R. Clegg, Joseph W. Duff, William A. Lishman, William J. L. Sladen
Proceedings of the North American Crane Workshop
Ten experiments have been conducted to determine if cranes can be led on migration and if those so trained will repeat migrations on their own. Results have been mixed as we have experienced the mishaps common to pilot studies. Nevertheless, we have learned many valuable lessons. Chief among these are that cranes can be led long distances behind motorized craft (air and ground), and those led over most or the entire route will return north come spring and south in fall to and from the general area of training. However, they will follow their own route. Groups transported south and …
