VCU News, 2001-2002

VCU Today, the University’s first official administrative organ, began as a somewhat irregular monthly publication but moved to a bi-weekly newspaper format in the 1980s. The newspaper changed its name to VCU Voice in 1988 and ten years later it appeared under the title UniverCity News. As it neared the end of its run as a physical newspaper, the publication became simply VCU News. These four publications were essentially the same periodical published under different titles by the Office of University Relations. VCU News appeared online for the first time in 2002.

On November 8 and 9, 2001, city, county, state, and federal officials; farmers; ranchers; reporters; environmentalists; and a wide variety of interested citizens met at Albertson College of Idaho to discuss the future of rural Idaho. Bat Morphology And Pollinator Specificity In A Neotropical Cloud Forest, November 2001, Kiva Rice

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

This study explores the degree of specialization of nectarivorous bat species and the plants they visit by examining pollen loads. The bat species involved are Anoura geoffroyi, Glossophaga commissarisi, and Hylonycteris underwoodi, all of which feed on nectar and are found in the cloud forests of Monteverde. Five nights were spent mist-netting and pollen samples were taken from the head, fore-body and back of each individual caught. These were placed on slides that were observed under a microscope and pollen morphospecies were counted. Twenty-two pollen morphospecies were found and a few were identified. Quantitative Comparison Of Fecal Coliform And Fecal Streptococci Counts Of Six Ponds In Charlotte Sounty, Virginia, Melissa Dunn Back

Performing testing to detect for the presence of fecal coliform and fecal streptococci are the acceptable standard methods for judging the quality of water. Their presence and quantitation are presumed to be a predictive indicator of potentially more serious organisms being present. This study was initiated to look at the differences in fecal coliform counts between irrigation ponds and livestock ponds. The hypothesis was that livestock ponds would have a significantly higher count of fecal coliform and fecal streptococci than irrigation ponds. This hypothesis was accepted. This Quarterly Report is a primary deliverable from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) Advanced Accelerator Applications (AAA) University Participation Program (UPP) Director to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) as described in the UNLV AAA proposal.

The UNLV AAA UPP Director implements the program’s administration using staff from the Harry Reid Center for Environmental Studies (HRC) to ensure that work conducted under the UNLV AAA UPP meets program objectives. The UNLV AAA UPP consists of three components: Program Administration, Research Infrastructure Augmentation, and Student Research.

Challenges to the expansion of local initiatives aimed at local environmental protection question the powers delegated to municipal governments from the state. New York case precedent suggests that express and implied police power authority conferred from the state to municipalities is a broad concept and includes the power to protect natural resources, scenic views, and other environmental concerns. Through the use of this power, localities are better able to meet the environmental challenges they are faced with by using innovative grass-roots initiatives
