Utilizing empirical data from studies conducted mainly by international organizations, such as the UNAIDS and the Food and Agriculture Organization , the thesis aims to strengthen the hypothesis that the higher the frequency of HIVIAIDS, mainly in rural African farm communities, the higher the impact there is on food production. Moreover, the supply, demand, and wages of farm labor are also affected by HIV/AIDS. To give a background of the conditions of disease, the first part of the thesis gives an overview of the history of disease. The history and possible origins of HIV/AIDS are delved into, after …

Community Structure Of Vascular Epiphytes In A Costa Rican Elfin Forest, May 2001, Duryea Delacroix

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Neotropical montane forests are characterized by their great abundance and high diversity of epiphytes. This study examines the distribution of epiphytic families in three zones of sixMeliosma vemicosa trees using single-rope climbing techniques to access the forest canopy. Nine-hundred ninety-seven vascular epiphytes from eight angiosperm families and division Pteridophyta occurred at the study site. Orchidaceae, Bromeliaceae, Araceae, Ericaceae, Piperaceae, and Gesneraceae were the most common angiosperm families. Pteridophytes accounted for 40% of the individuals present. Friedman's test for Shannon -Weiner index and Orchidaceae showed a significant Chi-squared value (X2 =8.4, and X2 =7.4) and tied p-value (p = 0.02, and …

Teachers have the difficult job of creating an educational climate in which subjects are linked and system are mutually dependent. Watershed education affords teachers thi s opportunity by using water quality monitoring as a basis for the study of any academic subject. A Ri ver Run Through Us: The Bear River Watershed Education Project (BRWEP) is a student-based program in Utah, Wyoming, and Idaho. The program aims to increase understanding and concern for the Bear River watershed by engaging students in water quality monitoring. An Ethical Framework For Interpreting The United States Endangered Species Act, Cathryn M. Elgin

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

In this study I argue that a holistic approach is better than an individualistic approach for interpreting the United States Endangered Species Act (ESA). I propose that the use of a holistic ethical framework, based on fundamental environmental philosophy, is better in that it more effectively fulfills the ESA's goals of species and ecosystem conservation. Holistic ethics is based on concern for a community as a whole, while individualistic ethics is based on concern for the individual. A holistic approach, I argue, is more beneficial to nature than is an individualistic approach or other non-holistic approaches. I set up basic …
