College Students’ Perceptions Of The C-Print Speech-To-Text Transcription System, Lisa B. Elliot, Michael Stinson, Barbara G. Mckee, Victoria S. Everhart, Pamela J. Francis Oct 2001

College Students’ Perceptions Of The C-Print Speech-To-Text Transcription System, Lisa B. Elliot, Michael Stinson, Barbara G. Mckee, Victoria S. Everhart, Pamela J. Francis

Articles

C-Print is a real-time speech-to-text transcription system used as a support service with deaf students in mainstreamed classes. Questionnaires were administered to 36 college students in 32 courses in which the C-Print system was used in addition to interpreting and notetaking. Twenty-two of these students were also interviewed. Questionnaire items included student ratings of lecture comprehension. Student ratings indicated good comprehension with C-Print, and the mean rating was significantly higher than that for understanding of the interpreter. Students also rated the hard-copy printout provided by C-Print as helpful, and they reported that they used these notes more frequently than the …

The Debate Over Annexing Texas And The Emergence Of Manifest Destiny, Lyon Rathbun Oct 2001

The Debate Over Annexing Texas And The Emergence Of Manifest Destiny, Lyon Rathbun

Writing and Language Studies Faculty Publications

Scholars have long understood that the ideology of manifest destiny congealed out of the millennial ideals embedded in American culture. However, they have not fully appreciated that manifest destiny only became a national ideology by overwhelming the arguments that were first voiced during the Monroe administration to resist the incorporation of Texas into the Union. Understanding how the secular ideals of the classical republican tradition were used to resist the inclusion of Texas can help us understand the crystallization of manifest destiny into a theologized ideology in the 1840s.

Promoting Curiosity Through Students’ Questioning, Harcharan Pardhan, Sadia Muzaffar Bhutta Oct 2001

Promoting Curiosity Through Students’ Questioning, Harcharan Pardhan, Sadia Muzaffar Bhutta

Institute for Educational Development, Karachi

Asking questions is central to intellectual effort; it is instrumental in bridging the gap between the known and the unknown. Questioning existed even before the time of Greek philosopher Socrates and still prevails in classrooms. Questioning is a major teaching and learning strategy for teachers in Pakistan. Unfortunately, teachers’ questioning overrules students’ questioning, leaving neither space nor time to create an interactive environment that promotes curiosity and meaningful learning. Using an innovative approach, we attempted to implement students’ questioning in an upper primary science classroom. The encouraging findings of our study and their implications are discussed in this article.

Mysterious Rectal Bleeding In A Female Adolescent, Hatim A. Omar Oct 2001

Mysterious Rectal Bleeding In A Female Adolescent, Hatim A. Omar

Pediatrics Faculty Publications

A 15-year-old female referred to our adolescent clinic for further evaluation of rectal bleeding was seen a week earlier in the acute care clinic with a two-day history of bright red rectal bleeding. The physical examination at that time was reportedly normal, including the rectal exam. The blood count with differential, liver function tests, ESR, and barium enema were all within normal limits. The patient, however, continued to complain of rectal bleeding and this led to the referral. She was known in the adolescent clinic as having a history of learning disability and mild mental retardation. She was started on …

Breaking The Chains Of Slavery: How To Continue Healing From A History Of Oppression, Jennifer Parrish Oct 2001

Breaking The Chains Of Slavery: How To Continue Healing From A History Of Oppression, Jennifer Parrish

African Diaspora ISPs

Through studying Ghana's history of oppression and the steps that have been taken to heal from this oppression, my objective was to identify each part of her oppressive past: physica, political, and economical, and through what I had learned in the multiple formal and informal interviews and observations about this oppressive past can continue. I learned through my research that healing is currently happening in Ghana. However, I concluded that only through proper education and financial as well as psychological reparation can complete healing occur. This process will pave the way for Ghana to finally achieve ture freedom on all levels.

Assessing Observation Focus And Conference Targets Of Cooperating Teachers, Margaret M. Coleman, Murrary F. Mitchell Oct 2001

Assessing Observation Focus And Conference Targets Of Cooperating Teachers, Margaret M. Coleman, Murrary F. Mitchell

Faculty Publications

The purpose of this study was to develop a strategy to assess two facets of the supervisory responsibilities of Cooperating Teachers (CTs): (a) what CTs choose to observe during a lesson when preparing to offer comments to a student teacher and (b) what CTs choose to bring to the attention of student teachers after observing a lesson. The purpose also was to determine the usefulness of the strategy in discriminating among CTs that may have different preparation backgrounds for supervisory duties. Eighteen elementary level CTs participated by individually watching a videotaped lesson, preparing a written critique, and responding to interviews …

Household Words, Lisa Knopp Oct 2001

Household Words, Lisa Knopp

English Faculty Publications

The Germanic words for home may have been derived from two Indo-European words: kei, which means lying or settling down, a bed or couch, as well as something beloved, and ksêmas, which means safe dwelling. These linguistic ancestors also yield the Greek koiman, to put to sleep, which is the root of koimeterion, a sleeping place or cemetery. In time, the word for home in several European languages (ham in Anglo-Saxon; heimr in Old Norse; háims in Gothic; kemas or kaímas in Lithuanian; caymis in Old Prussian, etc.) also came to mean a village, town, or collection of dwellings. Home …

Kosovo Myths: Karadzic, Njegos, And The Transformation Of Serb Memory, Alexander K.A. Greenawalt Oct 2001

Kosovo Myths: Karadzic, Njegos, And The Transformation Of Serb Memory, Alexander K.A. Greenawalt

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

This brief sketch of the Kosovo myth and its legacy allows one to see how the legend has played such a central role in the popular imagination of the Balkans. In its broader implications, the myth has figured in the debate concerning the origins of national identity. Observing that "the Kosovo battle became an ineradicable part of Serbian history immediately after 1389” and "inspired the greatest cycle of Serbian epic poetry, which was full of hope for the final victory and deliverance,” Aleksa Djilas has thereby argued that "the nineteenth century only revolutionized national identities already formed by language, culture, …
