Finding Aids

Nelson Spence was born on September 9, 1917, in Gettysburg Pennsylvania. After 32 years of service, he retired from the U. S. Customs Service in 1972. He began collecting newspaper clippings documenting smuggling and the drug trade in 1969, when he was given the task of shooting publicity photos for Operation Intercept. He compiled 40 notebooks full of clippings. This research led him to write Tomorrow Cancelled, a novel about drug smugglers in the El Paso/Juárez area. Spence also wrote a pamphlet on diabetes available in both English and Spanish. He died April 12, 2000. The collection contains newspaper …

Punitive Damages, Explanatory Verdicts, And The Hard Look, Richard W. Murphy Oct 2001

Punitive Damages, Explanatory Verdicts, And The Hard Look, Richard W. Murphy

Washington Law Review

Juries in most American jurisdictions can inflict punitive damages awards against tortfeasors who have committed especially blameworthy torts. Sometimes their awards are startlingly large-multi-billion dollar awards have become increasingly frequent. Nonetheless, juries are generally under no obligation to explain their use of this vast power—a punitive damages verdict typically takes the form of an unexplained number. Courts can and should change this practice. Under Federal Rule of Civil Procedure 49(b) and analogous state rules, courts could require juries to return "explanatory verdicts" that set forth the bases for their punitive damages awards. Several advantages would flow from adopting this simple …

Women' Studies University Of Nebraska-Lincoln Fall 2001, Joy Ritchie, Gwen Bedient

Women's and Gender Studies Program: Information and Materials

This has been a busy and energizing semester, with several new Women's Studies majors and faculty adding to the vitality of our program. The faculty began the semester reaffirming and redefining our identities and goals. Twenty-seven Women's Studies faculty members attended a Saturday retreat at the Pioneer's Park Nature Center. Julia McQuillan and Barbara DiBernard led focus groups that launched us into a vigorous morning of discussion, problem-solving and planning. We left with several resolves: to build on our commonalties and our enormous expertise as teachers, scholars, editors, writers, translators, rhetoricians, and organizers; to nurture the social and professional relationships …

The Future Of Information Literacy: Transforming The World, Dane Ward Oct 2001

The Future Of Information Literacy: Transforming The World, Dane Ward

Faculty and Staff Publications – Milner Library

Information literacy is currently understood as embracing the ability to define a problem, find information to solve the problem, evaluate the information, and use it effectively. In theory, these broad competencies encompass the entire research process and, ideally, should be integrated across the curriculum. In practice, however, most librarians continue to teach one-shot sessions on locating information, and rarely find the time or opportunity to develop applications of the theory. In part, our difficulty in gaining rapid and widespread acceptance of information literacy results from our attempt to fit this revolutionary idea within a traditional teaching paradigm, which diminishes it.

Modeling And Simulation Of Steady State And Transient Behaviors For Emergent Socs, Joann M. Paul, Arne Suppe, Donald E. Thomas Oct 2001

Modeling And Simulation Of Steady State And Transient Behaviors For Emergent Socs, Joann M. Paul, Arne Suppe, Donald E. Thomas

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We introduce a formal basis for viewing computer systems as mixed steady state and non-steady state (transient) behaviors to motivate novel design strategies resulting from simultaneous consideration of function, scheduling and architecture. We relate three design styles: Hierarchical decomposition, static mapping and directed platform that have traditionally been separate. By considering them together, we reason that once a steady state system is mapped to an architecture, the unused processing and communication power may be viewed as a platform for a transient system, ultimately resulting in more effective design approaches that ease the static mapping problem while still allowing for effective …

Nahuatl is the language of the Aztecs, and other Central Mexican peoples. At the time of the Spanish conquest it was easily one of the most widely spoken native languages of the Americas, with a geographical extent from what is now the northern reaches of Mexico to the southern border of Nicaragua. It continues to be widely spoken in Mexico and ranks as the most common native language in that country, with approximately a million speakers. It is part of a larger language family called the Uto-Aztecan family that includes North American Indian languages such as Shoshone and Ute, spoken …
