The Woman Behind The Camera: An Auteur Study Of The Films Of Dorothy Arzner, Jami Nicole Cope Jan 2001

The Woman Behind The Camera: An Auteur Study Of The Films Of Dorothy Arzner, Jami Nicole Cope

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Dorothy Arzner was the first woman to join the Director's Guild of America and one of the only directors to amass a catalog of eighteen films. Despite the respect she managed to win in Hollywood during the 1930s and 1940s, a stylistic auteur study has never been completed of many of her films. In this thesis, I review seven of Arzner' s films to uncover her stylistic sense of direction and editing to define her status as an auteur. The opening chapter provides background information regarding Arzner' s life and a working definition of the film term "auteur." In this …

Formative Assessment In University Of Northern Iowa Specialized Writing Center Outreach: Articulating Practices And Speaking A Common Language, Caran Amber Crawford

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

College writing centers are individualized places, which often causes miscommunication of the ideas and purposes centers uphold. However, if centers articulate the use of formative assessment strategies in tutoring writing, they would help alleviate miscommunications and strengthen the way writing centers explain their work in literature and practice; centers can also use formative assessment tools to evaluate their practices. This study identifies formative assessment strategies by means of observing writer/tutor roles, interactions, and outcomes in University of Northern Iowa (UNI) Writing Center practices in one-on-one tutorials for Pre-Professional Skills Test (PPST) writers and in the Spring 2000 PPST Workshop. The …

The Design And Analysis Of An Analog Ratio Spectrum Circuit, Liping Deng, John G. Harris

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The ratio spectrum (RS) is a novel method for signal analysis that has been successfully demonstrated for speech recognition and coding applications. In this paper, an improved RS circuit with an adaptive tenth-order Butterworth low-pass filter has been designed. We also present the first convergence analysis of the ratio spectrum. We derive linearized convergence expressions for the RS and compare the theoretical predictions to circuit simulations. © 2001 IEEE.

Design And Implementation Of A Biologically Realistic Olfactory Cortex In Analog Vlsi, Jose C. Principe, Vitor G. Tavares, John G. Harris, Walter J. Freeman

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper reviews the problem of translating signals into symbols preserving maximally the information contained in the signal time structure. In this context, we motivate the use of nonconvergent dynamics for the signal to symbol translator. We then describe a biologically realistic model of the olfactory system proposed by Walter Freeman that has locally stable dynamics but is globally chaotic. We show how we can discretize Freemans model using digital signal processing techniques, providing an alternative to the more conventional Runge-Kutta integration. This analysis leads to a direct mixed signal {analog amplitude/discrete time) implementation of the dynamical building block that …

Twentieth-century art song brings an expansion of influence beyond the German lieder tradition. This abstract introduces twentieth-century composers whose works have been selected for recital performance by Joy Harrell on July 29, 2000. The works include British composer Gustav Holst's Four Songs for Voice and Violin, opus 35, Spanish Composer Federico Mompou's Cinq Melodies, American composer Valerie Caper's …

Mary Mccarthy Writes Her Truth: Memories Of A Catholic Girlhood And The Expansion Of The Autobiographical Tradition, Roxanne H. Hughes Jan 2001

Mary Mccarthy Writes Her Truth: Memories Of A Catholic Girlhood And The Expansion Of The Autobiographical Tradition, Roxanne H. Hughes

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Modernist and postmodernist writer Mary McCarthy was a unique feminist writer. Throughout her writing career, which spanned nearly fifty years, McCarthy authored three autobiographical volumes, nine volumes of fiction, two books about art, and numerous essays and reviews. Regardless of the critical response to her writing, McCarthy wrote her truth her way. McCarthy did not capitulate to traditional patriarchal notions of autobiographical content and form; rather, she challenged patriarchal autobiographical traditions in her texts. This thesis examines McCarthy's first autobiographical volume, the 1957 Memories of a Catholic Girlhood, which describes McCarthy's orphanhood in post-World War I America. The introductory chapter …

Dynamics Of The Fragmentation Of D2 By Fast Protons And Slow Highly Charged Xe26+, I. Ali, Robert D. Dubois, C. L. Cocke, S. Hagmann, C. R. Feeler, Ronald E. Olson

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Using recoil-ion momentum spectroscopy, combined with a multihit detector system, the full momentum vectors of both fragment ions produced by fragmentation of D2 by fast 50-kV protons and slow (9.56–0.191 keV/u) keV/u! Xe26+ ions have been measured. The data are kinematically complete and make it possible to separate the laboratory momentum of the center of mass of the molecule from the momentum of each fragment in the center-of-mass system of the molecule. Using this separation, we find that, for higher collision velocities, the overall reaction can be described as double-electron capture, followed in a second and separate step …

The intermetallic compound Nd5Fe17 has potentially important magnetic properties and is being investigated as a possible permanent magnetic material. As with many other rare-earth transition metal compounds, this phase can absorb significant quantities of H(D) and lesser amounts of N. Gravimetric measurement indicate that ∼14-16H(D) atoms can be absorbed per formula unit leading to roughly a 20% increase in saturation magnetization and Curie temperature. We have carried out powder neutron diffraction studies to determine the location of D atoms in a sample of Nd5Fe17 containing approximately 15.5D/f.u. The large, complex unit cell of Nd …

Challenge Problem Update: Peec And Mom Analysis Of A Pc Board With Long Wires Attached, H. Wang, Todd H. Hubing, Bruce Archambeault

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

At the 2000 IEEE International Symposium on EMC, a paper was presented by Y. Ji et al. (paper appears in 2001 proceedings) that compared the application of PEEC and MOM techniques to the analysis of one of the EMC Society/Applied Computational Electromagnetics Society special challenge problems. Good agreement was obtained between the two codes at 2 out of the 3 measurement ports. At that time, no definite explanation was provided for the discrepancy at the third port. This paper shows that the problem was (at least partly) related to assumptions made about the signal source

Reorganizing Web Sites Based On User Access Patterns, Yongjian Fu, Mario Creado, Chunhua Ju Jan 2001

Reorganizing Web Sites Based On User Access Patterns, Yongjian Fu, Mario Creado, Chunhua Ju

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, an approach for reorganizing Web sites based on user access patterns is proposed. The approach consists of three steps: preprocessing, page classification, and site reorganization. In preprocessing, pages on a Web site are processed to create an internal representation of the site, and page access information of its users is extracted from its server log. In page classification, the Web pages on the site are classified into two categories, index pages and content pages, based on the page access information. After the pages are classified, in site reorganization, the Web site is examined to find better ways …

Performance Evaluation Of Hybrid Coding Of Images Using Wavelet Transform And Predictive Coding, S. R. Subramanya, Chaman Sabharwal

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Image compression techniques are necessary for the storage of huge amounts of digital images using reasonable amounts of space, and for their transmission with limited bandwidth. Several techniques such as predictive coding, transform coding, subband coding, wavelet coding, and vector quantization have been used in image coding. While each technique has some advantages, most practical systems use hybrid techniques which incorporate more than one scheme. They combine the advantages of the individual schemes and enhance the coding effectiveness. This paper proposes and evaluates a hybrid coding scheme for images using wavelet transforms and predictive coding. The performance evaluation is done …

Workstation Clusters For Parallel Computing, J. Stone, Fikret Erçal Jan 2001

Workstation Clusters For Parallel Computing, J. Stone, Fikret Erçal

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Workstation clusters have become an increasingly popular alternative to traditional parallel supercomputers for many workloads requiring high performance computing. The use of parallel computing for scientific simulations has increased tremendously in the last ten years, and parallel implementations of scientific simulation codes are now in widespread use. There are two dominant parallel hardware/software architectures in use today: distributed memory, and shared memory. Systems implementing shared memory provide cooperating processes with a shared memory address space that can be accessed by all processors. In shared memory systems, parallel processing occurs through the use of shared data structures, or through emulation of …

Reduced Parts-Count Multi-Level Rectifiers, Keith Corzine, J. Yuen, J. R. Baker Jan 2001

Reduced Parts-Count Multi-Level Rectifiers, Keith Corzine, J. Yuen, J. R. Baker

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Multi-level power converters have gained much attention due to their high power quality, low switching losses, and high-voltage capability. These advantages make the multi-level converter a candidate topology for the next generation of naval ship propulsion systems. The primary disadvantage of these systems is the large number of semiconductors involved. This paper presents a reduced parts-count rectifier which is well suited for naval rectifier applications where bi-directional power flow is not required. The proposed converter is analyzed and experimentally verified on an 18 kW four-level rectifier/inverter system.

Whispering Gallery Mode Dielectric Resonators For The Millimeter Wave Near Field Sensing Applications, Sergey Kharkovsky, Yu Prokopenko, M. F. Akay

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The resonance characteristics of whispering gallery modes (WGMs) in parallel-plate type cylindrical dielectric resonators (DRs) are numerically considered to optimise their characteristics for sensing applications. Results for the dependency of the resonant frequency, Q-factor, slow-down factor and electric energy filling factor of the modes on resonator parameters for both isotropic and anisotropic DR are presented. The possible applications of the results for millimeter wave near field nondestructive measurements are discussed.

20-H Rule Modeling And Measurements, Todd H. Hubing, Hwan-Woo Shim Jan 2001

20-H Rule Modeling And Measurements, Todd H. Hubing, Hwan-Woo Shim

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The 20-H rule is a printed circuit board layout guideline. On boards with power and ground planes, the fringing field at the edges of the board is contained by backing the edge of the power plane away from the edge of the board by a distance equal to 20 times the separation distance between the planes. In this study, test boards were built and measured with and without implementing the 20-H rule. The measured results are compared to numerical models. The results of this study show that, although the near fields are more contained, the radiation from a board implementing …

A Committee Of Neural Networks For Automatic Speaker Recognition (Asr) Systems, Viresh Moonasar, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper describes how the results of speaker verification systems can be improved and made robust with the use of a committee of neural networks for pattern recognition rather than the conventional single-network decision system. It illustrates the use of a supervised learning vector quantization neural network as the pattern classifier. Linear predictive coding and cepstral signal processing techniques are utilized to form hybrid feature parameter vectors to combat the effect of decreased recognition success with increased group size (number of speakers to be recognized)

A Nonlinear Voltage Controller With Derivative Adaptive Critics For Multimachine Power Systems, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy, Donald C. Wunsch, Ronald G. Harley

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Based on derivative adaptive critics, a novel nonlinear optimal voltage/excitation control for a multimachine power system is presented. The feedback variables are completely based on local measurements. Simulations on a three-machine system demonstrate that the nonlinear controller is much more effective than the conventional PID controller equipped with a power system stabilizer for improving dynamic performance and stability under small and large disturbances.

A Statistical Solution To A Text Decoding Challenge Problem, Xindi Cai, Rui Xu, Donald C. Wunsch, V. A. Samaranayake

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Given an encoded unknown text message in the form of a three dimensional spatial series generated by the use of four smooth nonlinear functions, we use a method based on simple statistical reasoning to pick up samples for rebuilding the four functions. The estimated functions are then used to decode the sequence. The experimental results show that our method gives a nearly perfect decoding, enabling us to submit a 100% accurate solution to the IJCNN challenge problem

The combination of machine-processable semantics of data based on ontologies and the development of many specialized reasoning services will bring the Web to its full power. The authors discuss: taxonomies; information sources; future issues; business viewpoints; the e-marketplace; and B2B e-commerce standardisation …

The Dillow’S Ridge Site And The Production Of Mill Creek Chert Tools, Brian M. Butler, Charles R. Cobb Jan 2001

The Dillow’S Ridge Site And The Production Of Mill Creek Chert Tools, Brian M. Butler, Charles R. Cobb

Faculty Publications

The Dillow's Ridge site (11 U635) is a small Mississippian village situated on an unplowed hilltop near the largest known Mill Creek chert quarry in Union County, Illinois. The site was both a permanent residential settlement and a major workshop where Mill Creek chert tools were produced for nonlocal use. Radiocarbon dates document the occupation from the late 1200s A.D. to A.D. 1450 or 1500. The production debris and rejects indicate that the major “export" products were hoes and Ramey knives. Although the quantity of lithic debris on the site is very impressive, estimates of annual production of large biface …
