Electrochemical Generation Of Superoxide In Room-Temperature Ionic Liquids, Inas M. Alnashef, Matthew L. Leonard, Matthew C. Kittle, Michael A. Matthews, John W. Weidner Jan 2001

Electrochemical Generation Of Superoxide In Room-Temperature Ionic Liquids, Inas M. Alnashef, Matthew L. Leonard, Matthew C. Kittle, Michael A. Matthews, John W. Weidner

Faculty Publications

We have demonstrated that superoxide ion can be generated electrochemically in room-temperature ionic-liquid solvents. In the absence of impurities, cyclic voltammetry showed that the super oxide ion is stable in these solvents. Similar superoxide ion chemistry has previously been demonstrated in volatile and environmentally suspect aprotic solvents such as dimethyl formamide and acetonitrile. However, ionic liquids are nonvolatile and should minimize the problems of secondary solvent waste. It is proposed that the resultant superoxide ion can be used to perform low temperature oxidation of wastes. Low-temperature oxidation of waste solvents can provide a much needed alternative to high-temperature waste incinerators, …

How Can A Science Teacher And Non-Science Teacher Effectively Collaborate?, Robert J. Kime Jan 2001

How Can A Science Teacher And Non-Science Teacher Effectively Collaborate?, Robert J. Kime

Mathematical and Computing Sciences Masters

Team teaching in an earth science classroom between a special education and a regular teacher can prove to be challenging, especially when the special education teacher is new to the teaching profession and does not have a background in science. Couple this with a regular education teacher that has never co-taught a class and classroom situations that are neither efficient nor productive are created. This creates frustration, resentment, and low self esteem. An accurate record of our daily education lives would reveal that there existed high levels of frustration toward on another, the curriculum, and the students. Our roles were …

Water Distribution Modeling, Thomas M. Walski, Donald V. Chase, Dragan A. Savic

Civil and Environmental Engineering and Engineering Mechanics Faculty Publications

To effectively use water distribution models, the engineer must be able to link knowledge of basic hydraulic theory and the mechanics of the program with that of the operation of real-world systems. Water Distribution Modeling does just that.

Written by industry experts, it provides a practical resource for engineers and modelers that goes well beyond being a how-to guide for typing data into a computer program. It contains straightforward answers to common questions related both to modeling and to distribution systems in general.

This textbook walks the practicing engineer or student through the modeling process from start to finish — …

A Framework For The Implementation Of An Iso 9000 Based Certification Program For Printed Circuit Board Manufacturers, Adam Y. Maamoun Jan 2001

A Framework For The Implementation Of An Iso 9000 Based Certification Program For Printed Circuit Board Manufacturers, Adam Y. Maamoun

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

ISO 9000:2000 is the newest version of the ISO 9000 family of standards. Unlike the 1994 version, it does not distinguish between servicing, testing and designing standards. It emphasizes quality improvement rather than quality control and briefly explains how to implement the Plan-Do-Check- Act (PDCA) cycle for improvement and the use of statistical techniques to improve the quality of process and product instead of controlling the quality of the output. The thesis explains why companies need to be certified and how to implement quality improvement programs.

The objective of this thesis is to provide generic certification guidelines for printed circuit …

A Unified Approach To Dynamic Modeling Of High Switching Frequency Pwm Converters, Christopher J. Iannello Jan 2001

A Unified Approach To Dynamic Modeling Of High Switching Frequency Pwm Converters, Christopher J. Iannello

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation will present the development of a unified approach for dynamic modeling of the PWM and soft-switching power converters. Dynamic modeling of non-linear power converters is very important for the design and stability of their closed loop control. While the use of equivalent circuits is often preferred due to simulation efficiency issues, no unified and widely applicable method for the formulation of these equivalents exists.

A review of conventional modeling technique via the method of state-space averaging will be carried out. Complete development of the averaged, equivalent circuit models for the nonlinear power switch/diode combination in modem power converters …

A New Strategy For Human Rights Protection: Learning From Narcotics Trafficking In Mexico, Jeremiah E. Goulka Jan 2001

A New Strategy For Human Rights Protection: Learning From Narcotics Trafficking In Mexico, Jeremiah E. Goulka

Cardozo Journal of International and Comparative Law

The article explores the challenges in human rights protection by examining Mexico's struggle with narcotics trafficking. It highlights how corruption and ineffective law enforcement lead to both underpolicing and overpolicing, undermining the Rule of Law and human rights. The author advocates for a two-tiered strategy to develop the Rule of Law internationally and locally to address these issues effectively.

The Roulette Of Suffering, Ed Morgan, Rachael Turkienicz Jan 2001

The Roulette Of Suffering, Ed Morgan, Rachael Turkienicz

Cardozo Journal of International and Comparative Law

The article explores the intersection of law, religion, and human suffering, drawing parallels between the unpredictability of legal outcomes in Holocaust-related litigation and the theological themes of the Book of Job. It argues that the legal system, like the biblical narrative, grapples with the challenge of assigning meaning to seemingly random events, particularly in cases involving state sovereignty and human rights. The analysis highlights the tension between the doctrine of state immunity and the pursuit of justice for victims of persecution, ultimately suggesting that legal outcomes often appear arbitrary, much like the suffering depicted in the Book of Job.

Cross-Border Insolvencies, Section 304 And Reforming Mexican Insolvency Law, Andrea B. Sluchan Jan 2001

Cross-Border Insolvencies, Section 304 And Reforming Mexican Insolvency Law, Andrea B. Sluchan

Cardozo Journal of International and Comparative Law

The note argues that Section 304 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code is a critical mechanism for addressing cross-border insolvencies, particularly between the U.S. and Mexico, despite its limitations. It highlights the need for a unified approach, such as the UNCITRAL Model Law, to handle the complexities of global trade and investment effectively.

The Doctrine Of Non-Inquiry And The Preservation Of Human Rights:-Is There Room For Reconciliation?, Michael S. Topiel Jan 2001

The Doctrine Of Non-Inquiry And The Preservation Of Human Rights:-Is There Room For Reconciliation?, Michael S. Topiel

Cardozo Journal of International and Comparative Law

The note explores the tension between individual human rights under international law and state interests in combating cross-border crime, focusing on the doctrine of noninquiry in extradition cases. It argues that while the Convention Against Torture imposes obligations to prevent extradition to situations of torture, the doctrine of noninquiry—where courts avoid scrutinizing the requesting state’s justice system—remains crucial for maintaining separation of powers and diplomatic relations. The analysis highlights the balancing act between protecting human rights and ensuring international cooperation in law enforcement.

Frequency Of Phrasal Verbs In Spoken English, Tatiana V. Bizon Jan 2001

Frequency Of Phrasal Verbs In Spoken English, Tatiana V. Bizon

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This study examined occurrence of phrasal verbs in spoken English as evidenced in a popular American TV talk show and revealed to what extent phrasal verbs in spoken English are taught/reflected in ESL idioms books. The design of the present study consisted of four steps: a preliminary teacher survey, collecting and analyzing data of spoken and written English, determining two frequency lists, and comparing the two lists. The teacher e-mail survey was conducted to determine the role of phrasal verbs in ESL curricula and what the most popular idioms books for teaching phrasal verbs to ESL students are. For the …

Scintillation Behind The Collecting Lens Of A Receiver, Clarissa A. Fleming Russell Jan 2001

Scintillation Behind The Collecting Lens Of A Receiver, Clarissa A. Fleming Russell

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

One of the negative effects that a laser beam experiences as it propagates through the atmosphere is intensity fluctuations or scintillation. Because scintillation-- as it pertains to laser radar and laser satellite communication systems-- is the main subject of this research, the assumption of an optical element ( such as a Gaussian lens) along the propagation path in front of the detector is valid. The mathematical addition of optical elements to the propagation path is treated using the ABCD ray matrix method. The expression for scintillation is derived, analyzed, and numerically calculated for positions to the left and right of …

An Exception Swallows A Rule: Police Authority To Search Incident To Arrest, Wayne A. Logan Jan 2001

An Exception Swallows A Rule: Police Authority To Search Incident To Arrest, Wayne A. Logan

Scholarly Publications

Compared to Fourth Amendment jurisprudence more generally, with its well-earned reputation for complexity and variability, the search incident to arrest exception to the Amendment's warrant requirement would appear an oasis of consistency. The exception affords police an unqualified right to search anyone they arrest, without first obtaining a search warrant from a neutral judicial official. This right extends to the bodies of all arrestees, their area of "immediate control," and, if driving a car, the interior of the car and any containers located therein

Linguistic Gender Is Related To Psychological Gender: The Case Of Chinese Characters, Yuk-Yue Tong, Chi-Yue Chiu, Ho-Ying Fu Jan 2001

Linguistic Gender Is Related To Psychological Gender: The Case Of Chinese Characters, Yuk-Yue Tong, Chi-Yue Chiu, Ho-Ying Fu

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Past research (Ervin, 1972; Konishi, 1993) suggests that a noun's linguistic gender is not just an arbitrary, semantically-empty linguistic category. Rather it may connote masculine or feminine properties, and thus can subtly influence responses to the noun and its referent. The present study extended this research by exploring how gendered radicals of nonsense Chinese characters might affect the characters' connotations. The results showed that when an unfamiliar Chinese character is encountered, meaning interpretation can be affected by the meaning of the radicals. Moreover, since gendered Chinese radicals are linked to share representations of psychological gender, such as representation may then …
