The 4 articles in this special issue make important contributions to both family and religious studies as well as to their interface. This commentary begins by considering 4 unifying themes present across all of the articles, including meaningful religion-family linkages, the importance of gender differences in the faith-family interface, the significance of intergenerational relationships, and the need for better theory. The authors then discuss the unique major strength and secondary limitations of each study. The study of children's social and emotional development requires that attention be paid to such factors as dispositional/biological factors (e.g., temperament), familial interactions and relationships, social contexts (e.g., school, neighborhood), and culture. For example, Hinde (1995) has advanced the notion that development be considered from a multi-level perspective beginning with individual characteristics and progressing the interaction, relationship, and group levels of analysis and conjecture. At the level of the individual child, developmental scientists have studies such constructs as temperament that might lead to problematic social or behavioral outcomes. One such interpersonal characteristic is that of "difficult" temperament – a phenomenon …

Effects Of Immigrant Status On Mexicans In The United States, Michelle Monique Balan

This thesis analyzes the relationship between immigration and mental health. I used data from a health and migration study of Mexican immigrant women in a Houston community. I found a statistically significant negative relationship between family social support and feelings of depression. Thus, family social support may have buffered some harmful effects of immigrating to the United States. However, I found inconsistent results with labor market variables that may be due to a measurement problem. Both employment variables were statistically significant (p<.05) for models (predictor, predictor and control) including loss of interest and these variables remained significant after control variables were added. Unfortunately, only one of the work variables--the number of months the respondent worked--was in the predicted direction. Contrary to expectations, the other employment variable (ever worked) was negatively related to a loss of interest in previously pleasurable activities.

This study analyzed the mean tips earned per table game dealer of a mega-resort casino located on the Las Vegas "strip" during Comdex, a large annual computer convention located in Las Vegas. Members of the media and gaming authorities have claimed that Comdex conventioneers do not gamble or tip as much as most convention attendees, yet no substantiated and documented explanation has been offered to explain why. This study hypothesized that Comdex conventioneers have the "programmer personality," which is low in the personality dimensions of neuroticism and extraversion. Participation Input And Participation Equality Within Cross-Cultural Computer Mediated Communication (Cmc) Environments, Roberto J. Mejias

The current study measured the influence of national culture, anonymity levels, and technological support (CMC and non-CMC) upon participation input and participation equality within and between forty-two U.S. and Mexican groups constituting a total of 469 participants. Results indicate that both U.S. and Mexican groups supported by CMC technology (i.e., group support systems) were more productive in generating participation input than corresponding manual groups. While U.S. manual groups generated more unique or non-redundant ideas than U.S. CMC groups, Mexican CMC groups in contrast, generated more unique ideas than Mexican manual groups. While the engendering of participation equality is generally viewed as a desirable group process attribute, findings from prior empirical research are both inconsistent and inconclusive regarding the measurement of participation equality within collaborative electronically supported environments. One explanation for this inconsistency lies in the manner in which the “participation equality” construct has been studied and measured. Results of analyses performed across three distinct national cultures utilizing 86 experimental groups and over 660 participants from the United States, Hong Kong and Spain are presented with recommendations for future research involving the participation equality construct. Problem

A survey conducted in the Humboldt Park Hispanic SDA church (HPHC) indicated that its members, like many others in our post-modern society, have neglected personal Bible study (PBS) and prayer. The results of this were evident in many aspects of their lives.

Method

This problem was brought to the attention of church leaders (elders and the church board). Consequently, a strategy was developed for involving all members in a week of prayer and seminars centered around personal Bible study and prayer. These images penetrate and pervade every aspect of our students’ lives in the form of television programs, children’s books, advertisements, movies, comics, toys, cereal boxes, video games, fashion merchandise, sport shoes, fast food paraphernalia, and architectural and public spaces. In this chapter we review recent research regarding the relationship between religious faith/spirituality and mental health outcomes, as well as provide directions for future research and discussion. The specific aspects of mental health and illness that we focus on include well-being, depression, anxiety, substance abuse, and schizophrenia. We also briefly discuss research pertaining to religious faith and personality disorders, eating disorders, somatoform disorders, and bipolar disorder.

During the past two decades a new, global, legal professionalism has manifested itself in the field of legal education through a variety of programmes seeking to produce globally-aware or globally-connected lawyers. This paper explores the diverse meanings of globalization and legal education with particular attention to the differential effects of globalization and the varied experiences of it in different parts of the world. Taking its starting point from a Nigerian graduate student's insight that globalization means 'The White Man is Coming again'. Assessing Depression Treatment And Outcomes Using Insurance Claims Data, Gregory Andrew Allard

This retrospective, longitudinal, quasi-experimental study uses insurance data to compare long-term outcomes among an adult population by depression history and treatment level. Treatment levels were assigned based on claims history correspondence with Agency for Health Care Policy and Research (AHCPR) depression outpatient treatment guidelines. Thirty-month outcomes included depression resurgence and total health care utilization (total utilization). Recurrent depressives (recurrents) were expected to experience resurgence at higher rates than single episode depressives (singles). Additionally, cases with AHCPR-recommended (preventative) treatments were expected to have lower resurgence rates compared to cases that received lower-level treatments. This presentation of original research on men's experiences with pornography draws on various theoretical approaches, including the social construction of gender and sexualities, pro-feminist men's studies, queer theory, and cultural studies. The research consists of lengthy, qualitative interviews with 64 pornography fans in the New York metropolitan area. The purpose of the study was to describe men's experiences with pornography and to test the hypothesis that the current literature on pornography does not represent their experience. This essay addresses how, throughout ethnographies of communication, researchers (re)negotiate their roles and voices with the speech communities they study. The authors demonstrate how a (re)negotiation process occurs throughout moments of pre-fieldwork where a researcher struggles with how to make sense of his or her role in relation to those studied, fieldwork where a member manages to tack back and forth between the role of member and the role of researcher, and late stages of fieldwork where role (re)definition comes after spending many months in the field. Despite its economic and cultural centrality, sport is a relatively neglected and undertheorized area of sociological research. In this review, we examine sports' articulation with stratification issues, especially race, class, and gender. In addition, we look at how the media and processes of globalization have affected sports.We suggest that sports and cultural sociologists need to attend more closely to how leisure products and practices are produced and distributed and how they intersect with educational, political, and cultural institutions. We propose the work of Bourdieu andthe new institutionalism to undergird future research.

William Faulkner's most concentrated and flourishing phase of literary production virtually coincided with the Great Depression, yet the relationship between these two monumental developments in American cultural history has remained for the most part unexplored. Consequently, a more complete understanding of Faulkner can be achieved by redressing this critical oversight. Such an endeavor must involve reconstituting relevant features of historical and cultural context so as to comprehend the forces informing Faulknees literary production. This is a study of Foraminifera from two stressed environments of the northern Gulf of Mexico: one of coastal seasonal hypoxia, the other of hydrocarbon seeps in bathyal depths---oxygen depletion being the common stressor. Many species of benthic Foraminifera survive the extreme oxygen depletion of Louisiana shelf waters in spring and summer. The dominant species are infaunal and have an adaptive tolerance to near anoxia or anoxia. A census of foraminiferal species present in dated sediment core samples reveals significant changes in the composition of the Louisiana-shelf benthic foraminiferal community in the past century. In this study I examine visual representations of tattooed bodies in three arenas of cultural production: tattoo conventions, advertising, and neo-tribal books. Through the methodological lens of genealogies of performance, I analyze these texts' construction of the tattooed body as classed, gendered, and exotic. I argue that contemporary representations of the tattooed body resist and reproduce discursive power regimes by surrogating prior cultural performances and representations of performance. I argue that contemporary visual representations of the tattooed body succeed in resisting discursive authority when they performatively cite multiple and transgressive authorities. The influence of irradiance and Fe supply on phytoplankton processes was studied, north (47°S, 142°E) and south (54°S, 142°E) of the Subantarctic Front in austral autumn (March 1998). At both sites, resident cells exhibited nutrient stress (F_v/F_m 0 at 47°S and 9% I₀ at 54°S because of MLDs of 40 (47°S) and 90 m (54°S), when these stations were occupied. The greater MLD at 54°S is reflected by tenfold higher cellular chlorophyll a levels in the resident phytoplankton. In the 47°S experiment, chlorophyll a levels increased to >1 μg/L^-1 only in the high-Fe treatments, regardless …

This study presents an analysis of research article introductions (RAIs) written in Thai by Thai academic writers. The analysis is based on 40 Thai RAIs taken from Thai journals in educational and medical fields. The rhetorical characteristics and linguistic features of the RAIs are examined using the CARS model proposed by Swales (1990). The results show that the pattern of studied RAIs supports the general framework presented by Swales but the specific steps in the introductions are less consistent with the model. The Thai writers avoided criticizing and evaluating the works of others. They adopted different strategies in establishing a …

The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of gender dynamics and culture on interaction in the adult ESOL, from the teachers', students', and observer's points of view. Using an ethnographic methodology, the researcher drew from class observations, videotaped segments of classroom interaction, teachers' self-evaluations of gender equity in instruction, and their responses to gender dynamics scenarios, student responses to classroom photographs, as well as student, teacher, and administrator interviews. Fifteen research questions were divided into three sections: Cross-cultural Context, Gender Dynamics and Classroom Interactions.
