Hiding Behind Nakedness On The Nude Beach, Lelia Rosalind Green

This paper draws upon a series of experiences between 1980-85, when I identified as a naturist during my summer holidays in Europe, and in a visit to Wreck Beach in Vancouver (where I felt very much at home). At the time, I was aware that nude beaches were much less threatening to me as a large woman than are conventional 'textile' beaches. This paper draws upon those experiences to theorise why this might be the case, and why I have been absent from beach culture for much of the past decade.

Research Article Introductions In Thai: Genre Analysis Of Academic Writing., Chalermsri Jogthong

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This study presents an analysis of research article introductions (RAIs) written in Thai by Thai academic writers. The analysis is based on 40 Thai RAIs taken from Thai journals in educational and medical fields. The rhetorical characteristics and linguistic features of the RAIs are examined using the CARS model proposed by Swales (1990). The results show that the pattern of studied RAIs supports the general framework presented by Swales but the specific steps in the introductions are less consistent with the model. This study analyzed the mean tips earned per table game dealer of a mega-resort casino located on the Las Vegas "strip" during Comdex, a large annual computer convention located in Las Vegas. Members of the media and gaming authorities have claimed that Comdex conventioneers do not gamble or tip as much as most convention attendees, yet no substantiated and documented explanation has been offered to explain why. This study hypothesized that Comdex conventioneers have the "programmer personality," which is low in the personality dimensions of neuroticism and extraversion. Participation Input And Participation Equality Within Cross-Cultural Computer Mediated Communication (Cmc) Environments, Roberto J. Mejias

The current study measured the influence of national culture, anonymity levels, and technological support (CMC and non-CMC) upon participation input and participation equality within and between forty-two U.S. and Mexican groups constituting a total of 469 participants. Results indicate that both U.S. and Mexican groups supported by CMC technology (i.e., group support systems) were more productive in generating participation input than corresponding manual groups. While U.S. manual groups generated more unique or non-redundant ideas than U.S. CMC groups, Mexican CMC groups in contrast, generated more unique ideas than Mexican manual groups. While the engendering of participation equality is generally viewed as a desirable group process attribute, findings from prior empirical research are both inconsistent and inconclusive regarding the measurement of participation equality within collaborative electronically supported environments. One explanation for this inconsistency lies in the manner in which the “participation equality” construct has been studied and measured. Results of analyses performed across three distinct national cultures utilizing 86 experimental groups and over 660 participants from the United States, Hong Kong and Spain are presented with recommendations for future research involving the participation equality construct. In this chapter we review recent research regarding the relationship between religious faith/spirituality and mental health outcomes, as well as provide directions for future research and discussion. The specific aspects of mental health and illness that we focus on include well-being, depression, anxiety, substance abuse, and schizophrenia. We also briefly discuss research pertaining to religious faith and personality disorders, eating disorders, somatoform disorders, and bipolar disorder.

Japan's Ise Shrine And Selected Norwegian Stave Churches: An Examination Of The Definition Of Vernacular Architecture., H. Gary Gillespie

Japan’s Ise Shrine (300-600 C.E.) and Norway’s stave churches (1100-1250 C.E.) are examples of vernacular architecture. Analyses of their functions, building materials, construction techniques, structural forms, and the impact of local philosophical, mythological, and folk influences upon their forms and decorations show that the Ise Shrine and selected Norwegian stave churches reflect cultural values and idea systems common to both cultures. By definition, vernacular architecture implies a regional, provincial character wherein architectural style is perpetuated by native traditions as opposed to cross-cultural influences or universal expression. Yet, as this study demonstrates, all vernacular architecture is not so idiosyncratic and provincial, …

From the first image that greeted readers of his book, Olaudah Equiano presented the self of his 1789 autobiographical narrative as a pious Christian, one whose religious conversion meant a kind of freedom as significant as his manumission from slavery. In the striking frontispiece portrait Equiano sits with biblical text in hand, insisting-in his visual as in his textual presentations of himself-that the Christianity he embraces is the defining feature of his life-story. A survey conducted in the Humboldt Park Hispanic SDA church (HPHC) indicated that its members, like many others in our post-modern society, have neglected personal Bible study (PBS) and prayer. The results of this were evident in many aspects of their lives.

Method

This problem was brought to the attention of church leaders (elders and the church board). Consequently, a strategy was developed for involving all members in a week of prayer and seminars centered around personal Bible study and prayer. Despite its economic and cultural centrality, sport is a relatively neglected and undertheorized area of sociological research. In this review, we examine sports' articulation with stratification issues, especially race, class, and gender. In addition, we look at how the media and processes of globalization have affected sports.We suggest that sports and cultural sociologists need to attend more closely to how leisure products and practices are produced and distributed and how they intersect with educational, political, and cultural institutions. We propose the work of Bourdieu andthe new institutionalism to undergird future research.

Wilhelm Halbfass's seminal study of the concept of experience in Indian religions illuminates the philosophical ambiguities of the term and its recent appropriations by some neo-Advaitins to serve apologetic ends. Anantanand Rambachand's own study of the process of liberation in Advaita Vedanta also critically reviews these apologetic strategies, arguing that in privileging anubhava, they undervalue or misrepresent the importance given to sruti in Sankara's Advaita. In this article, I hope to extend the work of these two scholars, this time reviewing the unusually strong appeal of a modern adept of Advaita, Ramana Maharsi, to Western scholars and spiritual figures. …

In Culture Clash: The Making of Gay Sensibility, Michael Bronski argues that dramatic differences occurred in gay male pornographic magazines around the 1969 Stonewall Riots in New York City. With a sample of gay male print pornography my partner and I have collected, ranging from 1966 to 1970, this article will explore the differences proposed by Bronski and ultimately prove their truth. With the publication of TESOL's ESL Standards for Pre-K-12 Students in 1997, there was established a format by which to standardize English language learner progress with defined goals, standards, descriptors, and sample progress indicators. School districts throughout the United States began redesigning their curricula to address English Language Learners' needs by using the Standards. A review of the analog literature about therapist self-disclosure suggests that nonclients generally have positive perceptions of therapist self-disclosures. A review of the naturalistic psychotherapy literature indicates that therapist self-disclosure occurs infrequently, is used more often by humanistic-experiential than psychoanalytic therapists, is most often about professional background than about intimate personal details, is used for many different reasons, is used cautiously by therapists, and is helpful in the immediate process of therapy. Effects of therapist self-disclosure on the ultimate outcome of therapy are less clear. This thesis reports research undertaken which will lead to improved pretreatments and therapies for disease caused by Clostridium perfringens, Francisella tularensis, Yersinia pestis and Burkholderia pseudomallei. C. perfringens is thought to be the most widely distributed bacterial pathogen and is the most important Clostridial species associated with enteric disease in domesticated animals. During warfare C. perfringens has been a significant causes of mortality. Between 1 and 10% of wounded personnel developed gas gangrene during the 1st and 2nd world wars. The ability of the bacterium to cause a range of diseases is due largely to the differential production of toxins. …

Problem. Information on Hispanic children and their families is limited. More research activity is crucial in the light of the rapidly expanding population of Latino/Hispanics. Mexican families present a particular challenge to clinicians and to treatment settings, as well as to researchers. The impact of acculturation on psychological assessment instruments is largely unknown. This study sought to use the Kinetic Family Drawing (KFD) as a tool to gain information about how differences in acculturation are reflected through drawings done by children of Mexican descent.
