Field Crops Newsletter - August 23, 2001, Ernest "Ernie" Flint Jr. Aug 2001

Field Crops Newsletter - August 23, 2001, Ernest "Ernie" Flint Jr.

Ernie Flint - Mississippi State Extension Reports

Flint's field crops newsletter about how the cotton, corn, and soybean crops are looking extremely good. The only issue is having enough time to harvest them all, especially the cotton, and every pound and bushel should be captured as prices are low. There is some discussion and weeds and diseases around some of the crops. There was also a special announcement for a Mississippi Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station (MAFES) event with cotton varieties.

A Conserved Ubiquitin Ligase Of The Nuclear Envelope/Endoplasmic Reticulum That Functions In Both Er-Associated And Mat A2 Repressor Degradation, Rob Swanson Aug 2001

A Conserved Ubiquitin Ligase Of The Nuclear Envelope/Endoplasmic Reticulum That Functions In Both Er-Associated And Mat A2 Repressor Degradation, Rob Swanson

Biology Faculty Publications

Substrate discrimination in the ubiquitin–proteasome system is believed to be dictated by specific combinations of ubiquitin–protein ligases (E3s) and ubiquitin-conjugating enzymes (E2s). Here we identify Doa10/Ssm4 as a yeast E3 that is embedded in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER)/nuclear envelope yet can target the soluble transcription factor Mat2. Doa10 contains an unusual RING finger, which has ubiquitin-ligase activity in vitro and is essential in vivo for degradation of 2 via its Deg1 degradation signal. Doa10 functions with two E2s, Ubc6 and Ubc7, to ubiquitinate Deg1-bearing substrates, and it is also required for the degradation of at least one ER membrane protein. …

Optimization Of Real-Time Protocols For Wireless Packet-Switched Multimedia Networks Based On Partially Observed Multivariate Point Processes, William S. Hortos Aug 2001

Optimization Of Real-Time Protocols For Wireless Packet-Switched Multimedia Networks Based On Partially Observed Multivariate Point Processes, William S. Hortos

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications

Next-generation wireless networks have been designed to transport integrated multimedia services based on a cellular extension of a packet-switched architecture using variants of the Internet protocol (IP). Each call, arriving to or active within the network, carries demand for one or more services in parallel, where each service type has a guaranteed quality of service (QoS). Admission of new calls to the wireless IP network (WIN) from the gateway of a wired network or from a mobile subscriber (MS) is allowed by call admission control (CAC) procedures. MS roaming among the nodes of the WIN is controlled by handoff procedures …

Dartmouth Scholarship

We present millimeter and submillimeter wavelength observations and near-infrared K -band imaging toward the bright gamma-ray burst GRB 010222. Over seven epochs the flux density of the source was constant wit h an average flux density 3.74 ± 0.53 mJy at 350 GHz and 1.05 ± 0.22 mJy at 250 GHz, giving a spectral index α = 3 . 78 ± 0.25 (where F∝ να). We rule out the possibility that this emission originated from the burst or its afterglow and we conclu de that it is due to a dusty, high redshift starburst galaxy (SMM J14522+43 01). …

Anisotropy Of Conducting P States And 11B Nuclear Spin-Lattice Relaxation In Mg1-XAlXB2, Kirill D. Belashchenko, Vladimir B. Antropov, S.N. Rashkeev Aug 2001

Anisotropy Of Conducting P States And 11B Nuclear Spin-Lattice Relaxation In Mg1-XAlXB2, Kirill D. Belashchenko, Vladimir B. Antropov, S.N. Rashkeev

Nebraska Center for Materials and Nanoscience: Faculty Publications

We calculated the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate in the Mg1-xAlxB2 system and found that the orbital relaxation mechanism dominates over the dipolar and Fermi-contact mechanisms in MgB2, whereas in AlB2 due to a smaller density of states and strong anisotropy of boron p orbitals the relaxation is completely determined by Fermi-contact interaction. The results for MgB2 are compared with existing experimental data. To validate the theory, nuclear resonance experiments for the studied diboride alloy system are needed.

Management Of Bird And Other Wildlife Hazards At Tribhuvan International Airport, Kathmandu, Nepal, Bashanta Kumar Upadhyaya, Richard A. Dolbeer Aug 2001

Management Of Bird And Other Wildlife Hazards At Tribhuvan International Airport, Kathmandu, Nepal, Bashanta Kumar Upadhyaya, Richard A. Dolbeer

Bird Strike Committee-USA/Canada Joint Annual Meeting: 3rd (2001)

Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA), the only international airport in the Himalayan Kingdom of Nepal, is geographically situated in the middle of the country at an elevation of 4,390 feet (AMSL) in a valley surrounded by hills. The airport was in an isolated area at the time of its establishment in 1949, but now is in the middle of dense human settlement and local market places. The polluted rivers on either side of runway, un-scientific municipal solid waste management, and emergence of earthworms near the runway and taxiways after monsoon rains in late summer are some of the bird attractants. Birds …

Bird Strike Risk Forecasting: A Modelling Approach, Wilhelm Ruhe Aug 2001

Bird Strike Risk Forecasting: A Modelling Approach, Wilhelm Ruhe

Bird Strike Committee-USA/Canada Joint Annual Meeting: 3rd (2001)

The German Military Geophysical Office (GMGO) issues BIRDTAM (Bird Warning to Airman) on the basis of current bird observations in order to reduce bird strike danger during low-level military missions. BIRDTAM force pilots to avoid or leave airspaces with high bird densities at the specific time period, therefore reducing bird strike danger significantly. However, BIRDTAM are depending on the actual observation of bird movements, are issued often unexpectedly, disturb the flight missions and can only display the risk situation with a validity of about 2 or 4 hours in advance. In order to be aware of possible bird related restrictions …

Damage Liability And Compensation In Case Of Bird Strike, Ante Matijaca Aug 2001

Damage Liability And Compensation In Case Of Bird Strike, Ante Matijaca

Bird Strike Committee-USA/Canada Joint Annual Meeting: 3rd (2001)

Most frequently, a bird strike cause damage to aircraft, and, in certain number of cases, a bird strike may have some considerably serious consequences (injuries and death of passengers, crew or third persons on a ground). In the circumstances of damage occurred, one side is entitled to demand a repair or a financial compensation, and the other side is obliged to realise the repair or the payment of the stated sum. The right to file a demand for repair or compensation depends on the result of determination of someone’s liability. In case of bird strike (either with Croatian or foreign …

Successful Actions For Avian Hazard Control In Brazil, Luiz Cláudio Magalhães Bastos (Maj.) Aug 2001

Successful Actions For Avian Hazard Control In Brazil, Luiz Cláudio Magalhães Bastos (Maj.)

Bird Strike Committee-USA/Canada Joint Annual Meeting: 3rd (2001)

Brazil built one of the world’s largest aeronautical infrastructure. The airport net is distributed along its vast territory, which shows a tremendous ecosystem variety. Having a large civilian aircraft fleet and also running second after Venezuela in catalogued bird species, Brazil has had problems related to bird strikes. Although Brazil has little problem with migratory birds, the threat posed by residents birds in some airports represents a risk to be managed. On the other hand, due to human population growth and poor policies of garbage disposal in the past, nowadays some big airports have in their vicinities open dumps that …

A Review Of Deer Control Devices Intended For Use On Airports, Thomas W. Seamans Aug 2001

A Review Of Deer Control Devices Intended For Use On Airports, Thomas W. Seamans

Bird Strike Committee-USA/Canada Joint Annual Meeting: 3rd (2001)

Deer living on airport habitats pose a direct threat to aircraft operations and to public safety. From 1990– 2000, about 520 collisions between civil aircraft and deer were reported in the USA with damage occurring in 86% of the collisions. Removal of individual deer by lethal or non-lethal means can reduce the potential for deer-aircraft collisions; however, such action is often controversial. Various items are marketed to keep deer away from airports, crops or residential areas. Some items have been tested while others have unsubstantiated claims of efficacy. This paper reviews the use of various fence designs, propane cannons, cattle …

Airglow Variations Associated With Nonideal Ducting Of Gravity Waves In The Lower Thermosphere Region, Michael P. Hickey Ph.D. Aug 2001

Airglow Variations Associated With Nonideal Ducting Of Gravity Waves In The Lower Thermosphere Region, Michael P. Hickey Ph.D.

Publications

A numerical full-wave model is used to study the response of the O2 atmospheric airglow to ducted gravity waves in the mesopause region. For an isothermal, quasi-adiabatic, and motionless background atmosphere the calculated phase differences between airglow brightness fluctuations and fluctuations of temperatures derived from the airglow, as given by Krassovsky's ratio, are in good agreement with the predictions of published theory. Significant departures from the predictions of the basic theory are obtained when we consider ducting in the presence of the eddy and molecular diffusion of heat and momentum in a nonisothermal background atmosphere. Wind shears also affect the …
