Work And Productivity In The 21st Century, Johann Van Reenen

University Libraries & Learning Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications

Advances in information technology have created the potential for global markets, virtually integrated work and workplaces, and international workforce development on a scale never before imagined. To capitalize on these developments, countries, organizations and their leaders need to understand the potential, the challenges, the policies and the attitudes that will be required for success in the electronic environment. This chapter provides an overview of the major technology and management trends and the formative role of digital libraries and information science. The characteristics of the 21st century, emerging trends for libraries and information management, knowledge management and technology driven changes, and …

The production and semi-leptonic decay of heavy quarks have been studied in the photoproduction process e+p → e+ + dijet + e- + X with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 38.5 pb-1. Events with photon-proton centre-of-mass energies, Wγp, between 134 and 269 GeV and a photon virtuality, Q2, less than 1 GeV2 were selected requiring at least two jets of transverse energy Ejet1(2)T > 7(6) GeV and an electron in the final state. The electrons were identified by employing the ionisation energy loss measurement. The contribution of beauty quarks was determined using the transverse momentum of …

Religious Fundamentalism And Gender Differences, Herbert W. Helm, John M. Berecz, Emily A. Nelson Jan 2001

Religious Fundamentalism And Gender Differences, Herbert W. Helm, John M. Berecz, Emily A. Nelson

Faculty Publications

The role of religious fundamentalism and its relationship to shame and guilt was evaluated in 107 students who attend a church-sponsored university. A number of personality measures were given and gender differences were analyzed. The role of externalization was similar for males in this sample to that of earlier studies. However, it was found that females showed positive correlations between externalization and both shame and guilt. For females, more fundamentalistic religious training may help to contribute to an external orientation at the expense of identifying with a personal religion, and appropriate guilt. © 2001 Human Sciences Press, Inc.

Overview Of A Guide For Electronic Theses And Dissertations, Edward A. Fox

University Libraries & Learning Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications

This chapter provides an overview of a guide for electronic theses and dissertations that is being prepared as requested by UNESCO to help with the expansion of ETD activities around the world. It roughly follows the outline developed through discussions involving the many partners working on that guide and coordinated by Shalini Urs. It builds upon experiences related to the evolution of the Networked Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations, a federation of groups interested in ETD programs. It introduces key concepts, explains matters according to the interests of students and universities, highlights technical issues, recommends a scheme for expanding …

Technology Infrastructure Supporting Digital Library Developments, Nancy K. Dennis

University Libraries & Learning Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications

This chapter provides an overview of the technology infrastructure upon which digital libraries are created and accessed. Host servers, system and application software, desktop workstation requirements, interconnecting networks, and the creation and conversion of data, are summarized. A case study of the Online Archive of New Mexico is discussed where more than one thousand finding aids to manuscript and oral history collections from four institutions were converted to SGML-formatted documents according to the EAD standards.

Databases And Portals For Knowledge Management, Soraya Abad-Mota Jan 2001

Databases And Portals For Knowledge Management, Soraya Abad-Mota

University Libraries & Learning Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications

The current availability, quantity and variability of Information Technology (IT) is overwhelming. Internet and the powerful set of tools loosely called "the web" dramatically changed the way people use this technology. We can take advantage of these new ways to try to capture an organization\'s knowledge and manage it effectively. Two key elements of IT that serve this purpose are databases and portals. In this chapter we explore the database and portal technologies, their interaction, and their potential for knowledge management. We also discuss briefly how databases and portals provide a good development opportunity for Latin America.
