Effects Of Plant Size And Flower Color On The Reproductive Success Of Pleurothallis Sanchoi (Orchidaceae), September 2001, Sarah Strozinski Sep 2001

Effects Of Plant Size And Flower Color On The Reproductive Success Of Pleurothallis Sanchoi (Orchidaceae), September 2001, Sarah Strozinski

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Factors contributing to the reproductive success of Pleurothallis sanchoi were examined in relation to plant size and flower color. This particular orchid has plants of varying sizes as well as three color morphs including yellow, purple, and yellow with purple petals. First, the potential for reproductive success was deduced by measuring, on individuals in natural populations, leaf and flower number and how they are related to flower color. Second, the removal and deposition of pollinia on flowers of different colors was examined. It was found that larger plants generally had more flowers, although there appears to be an upper limit …

Opilionids: Social Behavior As A Defense Mechanism, September 2001, Scott Rosenthal Sep 2001

Opilionids: Social Behavior As A Defense Mechanism, September 2001, Scott Rosenthal

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Four environments were created with varying populations of opilionids and experienced hourly mass disturbances to observe if there is a relationship between sex and tibia length in grouping in Monteverde, Costa Rica. The ratio of males to females was five to seven and a significant size difference in tibia among sexes was noticed (T-test male mean = 3.719mm; female mean = 3.382mm, P < 0.0001). Additionally males in groups were significantly larger while females showed no difference (male mean tibia length = 3.678mm (solitary), 3.741mm (group), T-test P = 0.0003; female mean = 3.383mm (solitary), 3.381 mm (group), T-test P = 0.9324). As the amount of disturbance increased, the group size would decrease. Yet the percent of return changed little among varying population sizes. Grouping among opilionids may be used to decrease predation. Their chemical defense will have a stronger effect and they may use individuals as barriers from predators with the competitively superior individuals occupying the center of the group.

Eicosanoids Act In Nodulation Reactions To Bacterial Infections In Newly Emerged Adult Honey Bees, Apis Mellifera, But Not In Older Foragers, Jon C. Bedick, Hasan Tunaz, A. R. Nor Aliza, Sean Putnam, Marion D. Ellis, David W. Stanley Sep 2001

Eicosanoids Act In Nodulation Reactions To Bacterial Infections In Newly Emerged Adult Honey Bees, Apis Mellifera, But Not In Older Foragers, Jon C. Bedick, Hasan Tunaz, A. R. Nor Aliza, Sean Putnam, Marion D. Ellis, David W. Stanley

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

Nodulation is the first, and qualitatively predominant, cellular defense reaction to bacterial infections in insects. We tested the hypothesis that eicosanoids also mediate nodulation reactions to bacterial challenge in adults of a social insect, the honey bee, Apis mellifera. Treating newly-emerged experimental bees with the eicosanoid biosynthesis inhibitor, dexamethasone, impaired nodulation reactions to bacterial infections, and the influence of dexamethasone was reversed by treating infected insects with arachidonic acid, an eicosanoid precursor. Several other eicosanoid biosynthesis inhibitors, including the cyclooxygenase inhibitor, indomethacin, and the dual cyclooxygenase/lipoxygenase inhibitor, phenidone, also impaired the ability of experimental honeybees to form nodules in …

Effects Of Climate On Inflorescences Of The Aroid (Araceae) Xanthosoma Sp. And Visitation Rates Of Their Scarab Beetle Pollinators, Cyclocephala Sp., September 2001, Jeffrey Lebrun

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Spadices of many aroids (Araceae) go through a process known as "thermogenesis", manufacturing heat to attract scarab (Coleoptera) pollinators. In Monteverde, Puntarenas, Costa Rica, Xanthosoma undipes occurs in patches at 1550 meters elevation. Here they attract two scarabs that are thought to be the sole pollinators: Cyclocephala nigerrima and C. sexpunctata. Chances of successful pollination of Xanthosoma have been shown to increase drastically with higher visitation rates of scarabs. Previous studies in Monteverde found no relationship between the temperature of the spathe and beetle visitation (Craig 2001) though taller plants at lower altitudes have been shown to attract more beetles …

Analysis Of Formal Lending To The Agricultural Sector In Nigeria: 1978 - 1998, Dayo Philip Sep 2001

Analysis Of Formal Lending To The Agricultural Sector In Nigeria: 1978 - 1998, Dayo Philip

Economic and Financial Review

The objective of this paper is to estimate the relationship between formal lending to agriculture and some assumed determinants of agricultural credit lending during the 1978-98 sample period. Lending by financial institutions to the agricultural sector was viewed for the purpose of model development in this study as the "supply of credit" to agriculture. Thus, the sets of determinants of agricultural credit supply to the Nigerian agricultural sector was assumed to consist of economic theory, policy and other variables. The models specified were estimated using the usual least squares procedure. The interest rate variable was negatively related to agricultural credit …

Bank Lending Behaviour And Economic Growth: An Empirical Analysis With Implication For Monetary Policy Formulation In Nigeria, O. Joseph Nnanna Sep 2001

Bank Lending Behaviour And Economic Growth: An Empirical Analysis With Implication For Monetary Policy Formulation In Nigeria, O. Joseph Nnanna

Economic and Financial Review

Preliminary findings from the empirical analysis show that the banking sector has not supported real sector output growth in its lending policy. The combined effects of risk aversion and infrastructural problem in the real sector represent serious constraints on credit flow to the private sector and the sectors declining marginal product of capital. Overall, while the banking sector has indeed, succeeded in deposit mobilization, it has nevertheless, not done a good job in its intermediation functions. The analysis further reveals the presence of policy distortions in the system, and its negative influence on banks' lending behaviour. The need to address …

Analysis Of Formal Lending To The Agricultural Sector In Nigeria: 1978 - 98, Dayo Phillip

Economic and Financial Review

Towards the attainment of the goals of the Nigerian agricultural sector, relevant policies have been formulated and implemented during the post-independence years. The agricultural credit policy, among several others, was aimed at ensuring adequate funds for the agricultural sector. The objective of this paper is to estimate the relationship between formal lending to agriculture and some assumed determinants of agricultural credit lending during the 1978- 98 sample period. Lending by financial institutions to the agricultural sector was viewed for the pi11pose of model development in this study as the "supply of credit" to agriculture. Allocation Of Environmental Risk As Between Landlords And Tenants: The New York View, James Schwartz, Boris Serebro Sep 2001

Allocation Of Environmental Risk As Between Landlords And Tenants: The New York View, James Schwartz, Boris Serebro

Pace Environmental Law Review

Environmental remediation statutes addressing contamination to real property often require the property owner to bear liability for the cost of pollution remediation, irrespective of whether that owner was at fault. Interpretation of these statutory regimes is often complicated when dealing with landlord-tenant-subtenant relationships. This article examines how New York state courts and federal courts sitting in New York have allocated environmental liability between landlord, tenant and subtenant. Specifically, the authors analyze allocation of environmental risk under the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act, the New York Oil Spill Act, and New York City Local Law 76. Examination of case …

The Impact Of Communication Medium And Outcome Severity On The Effectiveness Of Social Accounts, Peter D. Timmerman Sep 2001

The Impact Of Communication Medium And Outcome Severity On The Effectiveness Of Social Accounts, Peter D. Timmerman

Student Work

The present study was designed as a partial test of the model of social accounts by Folger and Cropanzano (1998). Organizational justice researchers have shown that social accounts are effective in reducing negative reactions and displacing blame from the decision-maker following a harmful decision. Using a 2 x 3 completely randomized design, the study examined the effects of outcome severity and media choice on four types of fairness perceptions, medium appropriateness, anger, and turnover intentions. A temporary pay cut scenario was used to manipulate two levels of outcome severity, and the company president provided an explanation of the pay cut …
