Collision-Induced Electronic Energy Transfer From V=0 Of The E(0g+) Ion-Pair State In I2: Collisions With I2(X), Christopher J. Fecko , '98, Miriam Arak Freedman , '00, Thomas Alex Stephenson Sep 2001

Collision-Induced Electronic Energy Transfer From V=0 Of The E(0g+) Ion-Pair State In I2: Collisions With I2(X), Christopher J. Fecko , '98, Miriam Arak Freedman , '00, Thomas Alex Stephenson

Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Works

The collision-induced electronic energy transfer that occurs when I-2 in the E(0(g)(+)) ion-pair electronic state collides with ground electronic state I-2 has been investigated. We prepare I-2 in single rotational levels in v = 0 of the E state using two-color double resonance laser excitation. The resulting emission spectrum shows that the nearby (DeltaT(e) = -385 cm(-1)) D(0(u)(+)) electronic state is populated. The cross section for collision-induced E -->D energy transfer is found to be IS - 3 Angstrom (2). A range of D state vibrational levels are populated, consistent with a model in which overlap between the initial …

Framework For Internet Banking Security, Jai Ganesh, T R Madanmohan

IIMB Management Review

The way customers are using financial services is changing rapidly. Today’s financial services are characterised by individuality, mobility, independence of place and time, and flexibility. The Internet, based on client server technology, has facilitated this change. Financial services companies are using the Internet as a new distribution channel, offering complex products at lower transaction costs to more potential customers. This also allows customers to access the service from any part of the world at any time, which they are doing through a range of intelligent information access and processing devices which include PDAs and mobile phones. Financial institutions can use …

Stern Measures: In Conversation With Joel Stern, S Venkatesh

IIMB Management Review

The financial evaluation tool that his company devised and grew. Elaborating on how it differs from the accountants’ measure of value and is an accurate measure of shareholder value, Stern claimed that EVA was emerging as a strong consulting practice in India, thanks to the sharpness of the quantitative side of the Indian brain. Defending EVA against Prof Zimmerman’s criticism, Stern strongly positioned EVA as a tool for evaluation, incentivization, and strategic decision making

Access For All, N. Mohd Yaacob, R. Mohd Ariffin

Research Publications (2000 to 2005)

We do not see many disabled and elderly persons using the streets, pathways and pedestrian crossings in many Malaysian cities. Reports of the disabled being disadvantaged and sidelined where equal opportunities in education, recreation, employment and commerce, had been highlighted before. The issue of inaccessible or barrier-filled access often originates from discrepancies in the planning, design and building of the built environment that do not cater adequately to the needs of the disabled and elderly persons. The lack of accessibility, erect barriers for the disabled. The frustrations in being immobile, dependent and being patronized while having to cope with day …

A Study Of The Effect Of Reception Of Works Of Art Through An Interactive Cd-Rom, László Halász, Károly Hantos, Balázs Faa

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In their article, "A Study of the Effect of Reception of Works of Art through an Interactive CD-ROM," Halász, Hantos, and Faa collected data on the aesthetic impact of art objects through multimedia. They constructed a CD-ROM out of various images, sounds and text. Items were offered to 135 secondary school subjects in the framework of directed interactive polychrome variations. The effect was studied partly by measuring viewing (reading) times for each item, and partly by semantic differential and attitude scales. The data for viewing time and phases, and of items of the semantic differential and attitude scales were analyzed …

Detecting Steganographic Messages In Digital Images, Hany Farid Sep 2001

Detecting Steganographic Messages In Digital Images, Hany Farid

Computer Science Technical Reports

Techniques and applications for information hiding have become increasingly more sophisticated and widespread. With high-resolution digital images as carriers, detecting the presence of hidden messages has also become considerably more difficult. It is sometimes possible, nevertheless, to detect (but not necessarily decipher) the presence of embedded messages. The basic approach taken here works by finding predictable higher-order statistics of ``natural'' images within a multi-scale decomposition, and then showing that embedded messages alter these statistics.

A Cusum Test For Cointegration Using Regression Residuals, Zhijie Xiao, Peter C.B. Phillips Sep 2001

A Cusum Test For Cointegration Using Regression Residuals, Zhijie Xiao, Peter C.B. Phillips

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

We show that the conventional CUSUM test for structural change can be applied to cointegrating regression residuals leading to a consistent residual based test for the null hypothesis of cointegration. The proposed tests are semiparametric and utilize fully modified residuals to correct for endogeneity and serial correlation and to scale out nuisance parameters. The limit distribution of the test is derived under both the null and the alternative hypothesis. The tests are easy to use and are found to perform quite well in a Monte Carlo experiment.

Egalitarianism Against The Veil Of Ignorance, John E. Roemer Sep 2001

Egalitarianism Against The Veil Of Ignorance, John E. Roemer

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

J. Rawls and R. Dworkin have each used veils of ignorance to justify equality (Rawls) or to compute what equality entails (Dworkin). J. Harsanyi has also derived a distributive ethic from a veil of ignorance argument, which, although not egalitarian, is believed by Harsanyi to be not excessively inegalitarian. Harsanyi’s analysis does not determine a unique social choice function, but rather a family of such functions. Here, by appending more information to Harsanyi’s environment, and an Axiom of Neutrality, I uniquely determine a social welfare function by extending Harsanyi’s argument. I show that this function is strongly inegalitarian, in that …

What We Owe Our Children, They Their Children, ..., John E. Roemer, Roberto Veneziani Sep 2001

What We Owe Our Children, They Their Children, ..., John E. Roemer, Roberto Veneziani

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

Egalitarian theorists, since Rawls, have in the main advocated equalizing some objective measure of individual well-being, such as primary goods, functioning, or resources, rather than subjective welfare. This discussion, however, has assumed, implicitly, a static environment. By analyzing a society that survives for many generations, we demonstrate that equality of opportunity for some objective condition is incompatible with human development over time. We argue that this incompatibility can be resolved by equalizing opportunities for welfare. Thus, ‘subjectivism’ seems necessary if we are to hope for a society which can both equalize opportunities and support the development of human capacity over …

Inferring And Testing Hypotheses Of Cladistic Character Dependence By Using Character Compatibility, F. Robin O’Keefe, Peter J. Wagner Sep 2001

Inferring And Testing Hypotheses Of Cladistic Character Dependence By Using Character Compatibility, F. Robin O’Keefe, Peter J. Wagner

Biological Sciences Faculty Research

The notion that two characters evolve independently is of interest for two reasons. First, theories of biological integration often predict that change in one character requires complementary change in another. Second, character independence is a basic assumption of most phylogenetic inference methods, and dependent characters might confound attempts at phylogenetic inference. Previously proposed tests of correlated character evolution require a model phylogeny and therefore assume that nonphylogenetic correlation has a negligible effect on initial tree construction. This paper develops “tree-free” methods for testing the independence of cladistic characters. These methods can test the character independence model as a hypothesis before …

R-band intensity measurements along the light curve of Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) discovered by the Supernova Cosmology Project (SCP) are fitted in brightness to templates allowing a free parameter the time-axis width factor w ≡ s(1 + z). The data points are then individually aligned in the time axis, normalized, and K-corrected back to the rest frame, after which the nearly 1300 normalized intensity measurements are found to lie on a well-determined common rest-frame B-band curve, which we call the "composite curve." The same procedure is applied to 18 low-redshift Calán/Tololo SNe with z < 0.11; these nearly 300 B-band photometry points are found to lie on the composite curve equally well. The SCP search technique produces several measurements before maximum light for each supernova. We demonstrate that the linear stretch factor, s, which parameterizes the light-curve timescale, appears independent of z, and applies equally well to the declining and rising parts of the light curve. In fact, the B-band template that best fits this composite curve fits the individual supernova photometry data when stretched by a factor s with x2/dof ≈ 1 - thus, as well as any parameterization can, given the current data sets. The measurement of the date of explosion, however, is model dependent and not tightly constrained by the current data. We also demonstrate the 1 + z light-curve time-axis broadening expected from cosmological expansion. This argues strongly against alternative explanations, such as tired light, for the redshift of distant objects.

Professions And Businesses Architects: Change Certain Provisions Relating To Which Structures Do Not Require The Seal Of A Registered Architect; Provide That Nothing Shall Be Construed To Mean That Construction Contract Administration Services Are Required To Be Performed Exclusively By Architects; Change The Provisions Relating To Architect Seals And Documents Required To Be Sealed, Janice T. Hellmann

Georgia State University Law Review

The Act provides for a clearer standard for determining when the services of an architect are required by law. Specifically, the Act provides that the seal of an architect is not required for single story buildings less than 5000 square feet in area. The Act also exempts single story pre-engineered buildings from requiring an architect's seal, provide that they are not assembly occupancies, education occupancies, health care occupancies, correctional or detention facilities, hotels, dormitories or lodging facilities, multifamily housing or apartment complexes, care facilities, or facilities that are classified as high hazard. Further, when the drawings and specifications for nonload-bearing …
