Case Study Of A Fourth Generation Mrm Program At A Corporate Aviation Operator, Manoj S. Patanker, James C. Taylor Jan 2001

Case Study Of A Fourth Generation Mrm Program At A Corporate Aviation Operator, Manoj S. Patanker, James C. Taylor

Journal of Aviation/Aerospace Education & Research

Research in aviation maintenance human factors maps the evolution of MRM training programs into four distinct generations bridging attitude awareness programs, behavior changes, and process and structure changes. This paper analyzes a fourth generation MRM program from the perspective of the multi-step process, developed by the authors, as a guide for airlines to develop their own human factors programs. This analysis demonstrates that the corporate maintenance human factors program under review is a forerunner; however, a few additional, definitive steps during the planning, implementation, and follow-up would make this program more robust.

Controlled Flight Into Terrain: How The Airlines And The Federal Aviation Administration Are Addressing The Problem, Roger C. Matteson Jan 2001

Controlled Flight Into Terrain: How The Airlines And The Federal Aviation Administration Are Addressing The Problem, Roger C. Matteson

Journal of Aviation/Aerospace Education & Research

Controlled Flight into Terrain (CFIT) is not a new problem. It has been around since the beginning of manned flight. A CFIT accident occurs when an airworthy aircraft, under the control of a pilot, is flown (unintentionally) into terrain, water, or obstacles with inadequate awareness on the part of the pilot (crew) of the impending collision (Wiener, 1977). It would seem that CFIT would be an easy problem to solve or reduce but unfortunately, that has not been the case. CFIT is still the leading cause of all fatal aircraft accidents in the world. Figure 1 illustrates the CFIT accident …

The Pcatd’S Role In The Cognitive Processes Of Flight Training, Amy Combs Jan 2001

The Pcatd’S Role In The Cognitive Processes Of Flight Training, Amy Combs

Journal of Aviation/Aerospace Education & Research

It has been proven that performance on one task, such as flight in an aircraft simulator, may aid or facilitate performance on a second task (flying the actual aircraft). This concept is known as positive transfer, or learning to make the same response to new but similar stimuli. Positive transfer is an important issue in the area of aviation simulation and has been the basis for a variety of research experiments conducted by the FAA, NASA, the US military, and academia.

Professional Ethics In Engineering: The Challenger And Corporate Culture, Joseph G. Ferrante Jan 2001

Professional Ethics In Engineering: The Challenger And Corporate Culture, Joseph G. Ferrante

Journal of Aviation/Aerospace Education & Research

Ethics in engineering is an important issue that affects the daily lives of almost everyone in the world. Because engineers and related scientists design, develop, and manufacture the many products that the public-at-large uses or consumes on a daily basis, it is in the best interest of all concerned that engineers be held to high ethical standards. This paper will reflect on the corporate culture issues involved in ethics in engineering, and specifically how corporate culture can affect ethical engineering and how it did in the case of the Challenger disaster.

Can Copyright Become User-Friendly? Review: Jessica Litman, Digital Copyright (2001), Jane C. Ginsburg Jan 2001

Can Copyright Become User-Friendly? Review: Jessica Litman, Digital Copyright (2001), Jane C. Ginsburg

Faculty Scholarship

In this review, I will first briefly address Professor Litman's evocation of the copyright law-making process. Her discussion of legislative history presents a valuable and compelling account, especially for those unfamiliar with copyright law. Nonetheless, it is not a principal focus of this review. For those who read the Columbia Journal of Law & the Arts (many of whom may well be copyright lawyers), the most provocative portions of the book, to which I will devote most attention, are likely to be the chapters in which Professor Litman (a) reviews and challenges various metaphors for copyright policy (Chapter 5, "Choosing …

Berne Without Borders: Geographic Indiscretion And Digital Communications, Jane C. Ginsburg Jan 2001

Berne Without Borders: Geographic Indiscretion And Digital Communications, Jane C. Ginsburg

Faculty Scholarship

This lecture examines the role of borders in the Berne Convention at the time of the treaty's first passage in 1886, and today. The later 19th century was an era of increasing commerce and communication among countries whose domestic production and reproduction of works of authorship had vastly increased, thanks in part to new technologies, such as photography, lithography, and high-speed printing. But at that time, the frontiers between nations often frustrated authors' hopes for control over, or at least compensation for, the international exploitation of their works. Authors' rights ceased at their national boundaries; the world beyond foreboded not …

Reasoning With Rules, Joseph Raz Jan 2001

Reasoning With Rules, Joseph Raz

Faculty Scholarship

What is special about legal reasoning? In what way is it distinctive? How does it differ from reasoning in medicine, or engineering, physics, or everyday life? The answers range from the very ambitious to the modest. The ambitious claim that there is a special and distinctive legal logic, or legal ways of reasoning, modes of reasoning which set the law apart from all other disciplines. Opposing them are the modest, who claim that there is nothing special to legal reasoning, that reason is the same in all domains. According to them, only the contents of the law differentiate it from …

Testing The Design Of A Library Information Gateway, W. Bede Mitchell, Laura B. Davidson, Virginia C. Branch, Lynne Lysiak

University Libraries: Faculty Publications

In autumn of 1999, the library World Wide Websites at Appalachian State University and Georgia Southern University had been in place for more than a year, and many library users reported that certain aspects of the sites’ designs were confusing. In order to alleviate the confusion, librarians from the two universities decided to redesign the sites by determining the greatest sources of confusion. To do this, we studied how patrons used the web sites by way of user-centered usability testing.

Evaluation And Rationalization Methodology For The Acquisition Of Packaging Capital Equipment And Services, Craig E. Densmore Jan 2001

Evaluation And Rationalization Methodology For The Acquisition Of Packaging Capital Equipment And Services, Craig E. Densmore

Theses

The development of proactive methods for the evaluation, selection, standardization, and rationalization of capital equipment and services used in the medical device industry will benefit equipment/process interchangeability and will result in lower costs of goods (COG). Reduced exposures to legal and regulatory issues are also expected. At the time this study began, senior management believed staff should have the latitude to make continuous improvements initiated without the burden of a corporate regulatory, engineering, quality, or procurement oversight, as long as each facility continued to meet or exceed appropriate performance standards and government regulations.

This work seeks to document the technical, …

Seasonal Climatology Of Hydrographic Conditions In The Upwelling Region Off Northern Chile, J. L. Blanco, A. C. Thomas, M.-E. Carr, P. T. Strub Jan 2001

Seasonal Climatology Of Hydrographic Conditions In The Upwelling Region Off Northern Chile, J. L. Blanco, A. C. Thomas, M.-E. Carr, P. T. Strub

OES Faculty Publications

Over 30 years of hydrographic data from the northern Chile (18°S-24°S) upwelling region are used to calculate the surface and subsurface seasonal climatology extending 400 km offshore. The data are interpolated to a grid with sufficient spatial resolution to preserve crossshelf gradients and then presented as means within four seasons: austral winter (JulySeptember), spring (October-December), summer (January-March), and fall (April-June). Climatological monthly wind forcing, surface temperature, and sea level from three coastal stations indicate equatorward (upwelling favorable) winds throughout the year, weakest in the north. Seasonal maximum alongshore wind stress is in late spring and summer (DecemberMarch). Major water masses …

OES Faculty Publications

A multidisciplinary research team has conducted a field-scale bacterial transport study within an uncontaminated sandy Pleistocene aquifer near Oyster, Virginia. The overall goal of the project was to evaluate the importance of heterogeneities in controlling the field-scale transport of bacteria that are injected into the ground for remediation purposes. Geochemical, hydrological, geological, and geophysical data were collected to characterize the site prior to conducting chemical and bacterial injection experiments. In this paper we focus on results of a hydrogeological characterization effort using geophysical data collected across a range of spatial scales. The geophysical data employed include surface ground-penetrating radar, radar …

Historical Radiometric Calibration Of Landsat 5, Erin O'Donnell Jan 2001

Historical Radiometric Calibration Of Landsat 5, Erin O'Donnell

Theses

There hasn't been a rigorous study of Landsat 5's thermal band since 1985, the year after its launch. Nevertheless, those who utilize this thermal imagery have been using it under the assumption that the sensor is operating correctly. This research was done to show that the thermal band of Landsat 5, has been radiometrically stable over its lifetime. Also, this research attempted to determine what the calibration of the thermal band has been. This was done using various Landsat 5 images of the thermal bar in the Great Lakes that were taken over the lifetime of the satellite. The focus …

Temporal Stability Of Speech Motor Programs In Young Adults, Darath Adele Fisher Jan 2001

Temporal Stability Of Speech Motor Programs In Young Adults, Darath Adele Fisher

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The proportional duration model is used to explain one invariant feature of generalized motor programs, relative timing. This model states that although the overall duration of a movement will change based on how fast or slow it is performed, the relative timing, across movement components remains the same (Gentner, 1987). The purpose of this research was to examine the proportional duration model as it pertains to speech in the normal population. This researcher wanted to determine if the relative timing of syllables in a word remain the same across three different rates of speech (i.e., slow, normal, and fast). The …

Probabilistic Principles In Unsupervised Learning Of Visual Structure: Human Data And A Model, Shimon Edelman, Benjamin P. Hiles, Hwajin Yang, Nathan Intrator Jan 2001

Probabilistic Principles In Unsupervised Learning Of Visual Structure: Human Data And A Model, Shimon Edelman, Benjamin P. Hiles, Hwajin Yang, Nathan Intrator

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

To find out how the representations of structured visual objects depend on the co-occurrence statistics of their constituents, we exposed subjects to a set of composite images with tight control exerted over (1) the conditional probabilities of the constituent fragments, and (2) the value of Barlow's criterion of "suspicious coincidence" (the ratio of joint probability to the product of marginals). We then compared the part verification response times for various probe/target combinations before and after the exposure. For composite probes, the speedup was much larger for targets that contained pairs of fragments perfectly predictive of each other, compared to those …

Evaluating Hungary's Mixed-Member Electoral System, Kenneth Benoit Jan 2001

Evaluating Hungary's Mixed-Member Electoral System, Kenneth Benoit

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

The electoral system adopted by Hungary in 1989 represents a monument to the potential for institutional design through bargaining to produce complex yet stable institutions. The key compromise reached during this bargaining process was the decision to use a mixed-member system, electing a roughly even number of representatives from both majoritarian single-seat districts (SSDs) and from multi-seat, list proportional representation (PR) districts. This decision established Eastern Europe's first mixed-member electoral system, a format that was to become common in post-communist electoral systems. In its ten-year existence, Hungary's mixed-member system has operated in three elections and seen three different governments come …

Education And Citizenship In Diverse Societies, Chandran Kukathas Jan 2001

Education And Citizenship In Diverse Societies, Chandran Kukathas

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

The question of the state's role in the control of sponsorship of education is addressed in the light of liberal political principles designed to keep peace and enforce toleration in culturally diverse societies. Some contemporary, self-described liberal philosophers argue for a much more substantial educational role for the state than liberal principles will really allow. Brian Barry's argument for that role assumes that the state can prescribe answers to controversial questions regarding the truth and the good life in which a truly liberal state would take no interest. Stephen Macedo is more accommodating to religious diversity than Barry, but his …

Of Time, Space, And The History Of Sociology: Methodological Rules In Archives And Archival Research, Michael R. Hill Jan 2001

Of Time, Space, And The History Of Sociology: Methodological Rules In Archives And Archival Research, Michael R. Hill

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

The "archival turn" that characterizes much new and recent work in the disciplinary history of sociology is institutionally situated and replete with professional obligations and scholarly expectations, some less visible than others. Unlike our colleagues in academic departments of history, we are relative newcomers to archives and their riches. Pandora-like, enough sociologists have now opened the archival door to make this a propitious moment to reflect methodologically on what we are doing when we ask archival questions and report archival discoveries. This essay invites our corporate consideration of three vital features of archival research into the history of sociology: (1) …

A Comparison Of Early Childhood Recollections Of Repetitive Self -Mutilators And Non-Self-Mutilators In A State Prison Population, Elena V. Merenova

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The psychological disorder of repetitive self-mutilation represents a significant clinical problem. In spite of the growing interest in this problem, insufficiency of information does not allow listing self-mutilation as a separate disorder in DSM-IV. The present research was aimed to add to an understanding the phenomenon of self-mutilating behavior from the point of view of Adler's individualPsychology. The early childhood recollections (ERs) of 32 self-mutilators (SM) drawn from the population of the Wabash Valley Correctional Facility (WVCF) were compared to the ERs of 37 non self-mutilators (NSM) drawn from the same population. The participants completed the Demographic Questionnaire and the …

A Test Of The Transtheoretical Model Of Change With Adolescent Sex Offenders In Treatment, Stephen Leonce Mailloux Jan 2001

A Test Of The Transtheoretical Model Of Change With Adolescent Sex Offenders In Treatment, Stephen Leonce Mailloux

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The rationale for treating adolescent sex offenders is based on the expectation that change will occur. Yet, not all adolescent sex offenders are ready or willing to change. The Transtheoretical model describes a person's readiness for change and predicts the likelihood of change based on level of readiness. While the model has been successfully applied to adults, it has never been applied to adolescent sex offenders in treatment. Thus one of the goals of the study was to provide descriptive information on the applicability of the model's stage of change to adolescent sex offenders in treatment. A second goal was …
