Creating And Supporting The Proxy-Decider: The Lawyer-Proxy Relationship, Nancy N. Dubler Jan 2001

Creating And Supporting The Proxy-Decider: The Lawyer-Proxy Relationship, Nancy N. Dubler

Georgia Law Review

Advance directives have been identified as the "quick fix" of bioethics. The logic goes something like this: If we could only get patients to tell us, in advance of disability, the specifics of the health care they would want to receive in the future, we could put our ethical and legal qualms aside and march ahead with care that we know is patient appropriate and legally protected. If we could only get the patient to commit, we could proceed with moral certainty and risk assurance. If we could only be given explicit instructions, we could act accordingly and be comfortable …

An Analysis Of Quality Of Life, Income Distribution And Rural Development In West Virginia., James Obadiah Bukenya Jan 2001

An Analysis Of Quality Of Life, Income Distribution And Rural Development In West Virginia., James Obadiah Bukenya

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The term quality of life has been described as a vague entity (Grayson and Young, 1994) and conceptualizing it, has proved to be difficult. Nevertheless, understanding how individuals form their needs to create life satisfaction is important because these subjective evaluations determine life adjustment and mobility behavior and is the basis of demand for public actions. Additionally, more effective social programs can be designed based on the knowledge of how individuals form their needs to create life satisfaction and avoid problems that may result because the perceptions of the planners and policy makers do not always coincide with those of …

Retroviral Recombination During Reverse Transcription: An Analysis Of The Mechanism, Frequency, And Effect Of The Viral Packaging Signal (Ψ)., Jeffrey Allan Anderson Jan 2001

Retroviral Recombination During Reverse Transcription: An Analysis Of The Mechanism, Frequency, And Effect Of The Viral Packaging Signal (Ψ)., Jeffrey Allan Anderson

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Retroviral recombination occurs during replication and produces a DNA copy that contains genetic information from two parental RNAs. Recombination increases variation within the viral population by reassortment of mutations. In the presence of selective pressures, such as drug treatments, host immunosurveillance, or anti-viral vaccines, retroviruses are able to evolve rapidly leading to higher viral titers and increased pathogenicity. Two models have been proposed to explain the mechanism of recombination. The first model, minus-strand recombination, proposed that each recombination event generated a recombinant with one template switch. In contrast, the second model, plus-strand recombination, proposed that each recombination event generated a …

The Role Of Accessory Proteins In Controlling The Thyroid Hormone Regulation Of Transcription Of The Malic Enzyme Gene., Yutong Wang Jan 2001

The Role Of Accessory Proteins In Controlling The Thyroid Hormone Regulation Of Transcription Of The Malic Enzyme Gene., Yutong Wang

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Triiodothyronine (T3) stimulates a 70-fold or greater increase in transcription of the malic enzyme gene in chick embryo hepatocytes. Previous work has shown that the effects of T3 on malic enzyme transcription are mediated in large part by sequence elements located within a liver-specific and T3-inducible DNase I hypersensitive region in the 5′-flanking DNA of the malic enzyme gene. Within this DNase I hypersensitive region is a cluster of nuclear T3 receptor (TR) binding sites that together constitute a T3 response unit (TAU). Flanking the T3RU are accessory elements that enhance T3 regulation conferred by the T3RU in chick embryo …

Working with culinary arts faculty, the voice of industry speaks to great and immediate challenges, which require an evolving curriculum to prepare future culinarians.

A Guideline For Initiating An Environmental Management System In Academia, David Turkow Jan 2001

A Guideline For Initiating An Environmental Management System In Academia, David Turkow

Theses

Managing environmental concerns in an academic environment poses unique challenges to colleges and universities. Many college EHS professionals face an uphill battle to promote environmental improvement in an organized, systematic, and sustainable fashion - an Environmental Management System (EMS) is designed to do just that. Some inherent difficulties encountered in an academic setting include 1) lack of management support and 2) the perception that colleges do not have major environmental compliance issues (contributing factor to #1). By identifying issues unique to academia and differences in perception between EHS professionals and academic senior management, chances for successfully initiating/implementing an EMS are …

Optimised Manufacture, Packing And Distribution Of E-Fluted Corrugated Detergent Containers, Enis Kancelir

Theses

E-fluted corrugated containers are widely used on the European markets and other markets world-wide. The production of this type of containers is therefore very important in the area of detergent packing and distribution. It is very important to improve and develop such forms of packing. This paper shows the method of packing which is as effective as the one we have used by now, but which involves significant reduction in the costs of operation. Additional rationalisation has been also defined by adequate ASTM testing methods.

The Effect Of Software Requirements Analysis On Project Success And Product Quality, Vera Berenbaum Jan 2001

The Effect Of Software Requirements Analysis On Project Success And Product Quality, Vera Berenbaum

Theses

This paper will demonstrate that the general project management principles' regarding requirements analysis also hold true for software development projects. According to conventional project management wisdom, sound requirements analysis and scope definition tends to improve quality planning, thereby reducing project cost and duration, increasing project success and improving the quality of the resulting product. This paper will demonstrate that software development projects tend to challenge this time-proven notion. The paper will also demonstrate that the software development industry pays a high price for these practices by suffering longer project schedules, higher costs and producing poorer quality products by rushing requirements …

Uptake Of Dissolved Organic Selenides By Marine Phytoplankton, Stephen B. Baines, Nicholas S. Fisher, Martina A. Doblin, Gregory A. Cutter Jan 2001

Uptake Of Dissolved Organic Selenides By Marine Phytoplankton, Stephen B. Baines, Nicholas S. Fisher, Martina A. Doblin, Gregory A. Cutter

OES Faculty Publications

Se is present in multiple oxidation states in nature, each of which has unique chemical and biological reactivities. As a consequence, the rate of Se incorporation into food webs or its role as either a limiting nutrient or a toxic substance is a function of complex biogeochemistry. In particular, little is understood about the accumulation of dissolved organic selenides by phyto- or bacterioplankton. We assessed the bioavailability of dissolved organic selenides to marine and estuarine phytoplankton by presenting various algal species with filtered lysates of the diatom, Thalassiosira pseudonana, grown on media amended with radiolabeled selenite (75Se[IV]). …

Top-Down Impact Through A Bottom-Up Mechanism. In Situ Effects Of Limpet Grazing On Growth, Light Requirements And Survival Of The Eelgrass Zostera Marina, Richard C. Zimmerman, Diana L. Steller, Donald G. Kohrs, Randall S. Alberte

OES Faculty Publications

Temporal changes in abundance, size, productivity, resource allocation and light requirements of a subtidal eelgrass (Zostera marina L.) population were followed for 2 yr after the September 1993 appearance of a previously rare oval form of the commensal limpet Tectura depicta (Berry) in Monterey Bay, California, USA, By exclusively targeting the epidermis, limpet grazing impaired photosynthetic performance but left respiratory demand, meristematic growth and more than 90 % of the leaf biomass intact, The resulting low P:R ratios of grazed plants raised the light requirements for the maintenance of positive carbon balance almost 2-fold relative to healthy ungrazed plants …

Control Of Phytoplankton Growth By Iron And Silicic Acid Availability In The Subantarctic Ocean: Experimental Results From The Saz Project, D. A. Hutchins, Peter N. Sedwick, G. R. Ditullio, P. W. Boyd, B. Queguiner, F. B. Griffiths, C. Crossley Jan 2001

Control Of Phytoplankton Growth By Iron And Silicic Acid Availability In The Subantarctic Ocean: Experimental Results From The Saz Project, D. A. Hutchins, Peter N. Sedwick, G. R. Ditullio, P. W. Boyd, B. Queguiner, F. B. Griffiths, C. Crossley

OES Faculty Publications

Subantarctic Southern Ocean surface waters in the austral summer and autumn are characterized by high concentrations of nitrate and phosphate but low concentrations of dissolved iron (Fe, similar to0.05 nM) and silicic acid (Si, <1 muM). During the Subantarctic Zone AU9706 cruise in March 1998 we investigated the relative importance of Fe and Si in controlling phytoplankton growth and species composition at a station within the subantarctic water mass (46.8degreesS, 142degreesE) using shipboard bottle incubation experiments. Treatments included unamended controls; 1.9 nM added iron (+Fe); 9 muM added silicic acid (+Si); and 1.9 nM addediron plus 9 muM added silicic acid (+Fe+Si). We followed a detailed set of biological and biogeochemical parameters over 8 days. Fe added alone clearly increased community growth rates and nitrate drawdown and altered algal community composition relative to control treatments. Surprisingly, small, lightly silicified pennate diatoms grew when Fe was added either with or without Si, despite the extremely low ambient silicic acid concentrations. Pigment analyses suggest that lightly silicified chrysophytes (type 4 haptophytes) may have preferentially responded to Si added either with or without Fe. However, for many of the parameters measured the +Fe+Si treatments showed large increases relative to both the +Fe and +Si treatments. Our results suggest that iron is the proximate limiting nutrient for chlorophyll production, photosynthetic efficiency, nitrate drawdown, and diatom growth, but that Si also exerts considerable control over algal growth and species composition. Both nutrients together are needed to elicit a maximum growth response, suggesting that both Fe and Si play important roles in structuring the subantarctic phytoplankton community.

The biogenic material is dominated by marine diatoms including Fragilariopsis curta, Fragilariopsis cylindrus, and Chaetoceros spp. in the dark-colored SMO and Corethron criophilum in the …

The New Social Discipline : A Critical Analysis Of Federal Drug-Free Workplace Legislation And Employee Drug Testing, Matthew T. Lammers Jan 2001

The New Social Discipline : A Critical Analysis Of Federal Drug-Free Workplace Legislation And Employee Drug Testing, Matthew T. Lammers

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

In this research I contend that the arguments for drug-free workplaces are framed within a narrative of science that lends authenticity to the recurring themes that drug testing promotes the health, safety, and productivity of the American workforce. The sense of authenticity effectively delimits the discourse of drug testing and presents the complexities of drug abuse in binary oppositions that contribute to normalizing the behavior of all individuals, not just those who abuse drugs. I suggest that the process of normalization reproduces the delimitation of discourse and provides justifications for introducing drug testing into areas of society beyond the walls …

Porosity, Percolation Thresholds, And Water Retention Behavior Of Random Fractal Porous Media, Michael C. Sukop Jan 2001

Porosity, Percolation Thresholds, And Water Retention Behavior Of Random Fractal Porous Media, Michael C. Sukop

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Fractals are a relatively recent development in mathematics that show promise as a foundation for models of complex systems like natural porous media. One important issue that has not been thoroughly explored is the affect of different algorithms commonly used to generate random fractal porous media on their properties and processes within them. The heterogeneous method can lead to large, uncontrolled variations in porosity. It is proposed that use of the homogeneous algorithm might lead to more reproducible applications. Computer codes that will make it easier for researchers to experiment with fractal models are provided. In Chapter 2, the application …

Characterization Of Epitheliogenesis Imperfecta In Equus Caballus, Louis D. Lieto Jan 2001

Characterization Of Epitheliogenesis Imperfecta In Equus Caballus, Louis D. Lieto

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Epitheliogenesis Imperfecta (EI) is a mechanobullous disease that occurs in newborn American Saddlebred and Belgian Draft foals. Necropsy evaluations of two American Saddlebred foals revealed broad skin lesions, dental abnormalities and oral mucosa lesions. Construction of a partial pedigree showing occurrences of EI in American Saddlebred horses was consistent with a recessive pattern of inheritance. An allelic frequency of 0.04 was estimated for the EI gene. The pathological signs of EI were similar to a disease in humans known as Herlitz Junctional Epidermolysis Bullosa (HJEB). HJEB is caused by a defect in one of the three subunits of the laminin …

Automatic Image To Model Alignment For Photo-Realistic Urban Model Reconstruction, Mike Partington Jan 2001

Automatic Image To Model Alignment For Photo-Realistic Urban Model Reconstruction, Mike Partington

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

We introduce a hybrid approach in which images of an urban scene are automatically alignedwith a base geometry of the scene to determine model-relative external camera parameters. Thealgorithm takes as input a model of the scene and images with approximate external cameraparameters and aligns the images to the model by extracting the facades from the images andaligning the facades with the model by minimizing over a multivariate objective function. Theresulting image-pose pairs can be used to render photo-realistic views of the model via texturemapping.Several natural extensions to the base hybrid reconstruction technique are also introduced. Theseextensions, which include vanishing point …

Water bar construction and reshaping activities such as filling ruts and berm removal were filmed continuously with a video camera and then analyzed using time-motion study techniques. Labor activities for revegetation such as seeding and application of fertilizer were also timed. The average total machine time for retirement activities per 1000 feet was …

St. Mary Of Egypt In Bl Ms Cotton Otho B. X: New Textual Evidence For An Old English Saint's Life, Linda M. Cantara Jan 2001

St. Mary Of Egypt In Bl Ms Cotton Otho B. X: New Textual Evidence For An Old English Saint's Life, Linda M. Cantara

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Scholarship of the anonymous Old English prose Life of St. Mary of Egypt ranges from source studies and linguistic analyses to explorations of Anglo-Saxon female sexuality and comparisons to saints' lives translated by the monk Ælfric, but all of these studies have been based on either the text extant in BL MS Cotton Julius E. vii or on W. W. Skeat's edition of the Julius manuscript, Ælfric's Lives of Saints (1881-1900). There is, however, an as yet unedited fragmentary copy of the Old English Mary of Egypt in BL MS Cotton Otho B. x, a manuscript severely damaged by fire …
