The Impact Of Inattentive Respondents And The Efficacy Of Quality Control Checks In Online Surveys, Tammy Mccullough, Sam Fullerton Apr 2026

The Impact Of Inattentive Respondents And The Efficacy Of Quality Control Checks In Online Surveys, Tammy Mccullough, Sam Fullerton

Global Advances in Business Communication

An online survey provided insight regarding problems associated with inattentive respondents when collecting primary data using an Internet interface. Rather than open-access, respondents were part of a commercially maintained consumer panel. Inattentive respondents were identified using three quality control checks: an instructional manipulation, a common knowledge question, and a time check. Of the 1,452 respondents who completed the 83-question survey, 511 respondents (35.19%) failed at least one quality control check; 59 (4.06%) failed all three. Deviations between inattentive and attentive respondents were identified. For the instructional manipulation and the common knowledge checks, the impact of the inattentive respondents depended upon …

From Renaissance To 20th Century: The Influence Of Musical Training On Historical Music Preferences*, Susanna Ziesmer Apr 2026

From Renaissance To 20th Century: The Influence Of Musical Training On Historical Music Preferences*, Susanna Ziesmer

Campus Research Month

Music taste is highly complex, influenced by factors of age, personality, familiarity, and musical training. While any studies have researched trends of preference for popular music genres and general classical music, few have broken the classical genre into its stylistically unique historical periods. This study examines the differences in preference for six historical music eras—Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Impressionist, and 20th century—between classically trained and non-trained individuals. Musicians were expected to show a higher overall preference for classical music and a narrower preference range between eras than that of non-musicians. It was also hypothesized that Romantic music would receive the …

Which Is The Most Effective Study Break: Movement, Media, Or Rest?*, Emily R. Grant, Kalla Carballo, Aislin Robinson

Campus Research Month

College students frequently incorporate breaks of various types into their study sessions; however, limited research has examined how different types of breaks affect memory retention. The proposed study will examine how exercising, spending time on social media, or participating in quiet rest affect delayed recall among undergraduate college students. The study predicts that students who participate in an exercise break will show improved memory retention, while students who are exposed to social media will experience reduced memory retention. The study also hypothesizes that students who are assigned to the quiet rest condition will demonstrate no significant change in retention. Undergraduate …

Zenbrain: A Neuroscience-Inspired 7-Layer Memory Architecture For Autonomous Ai Systems, Alexander Bering

Defensive Publications Series

Memory management remains a fundamental challenge for autonomous AI systems. Existing approaches employ operating system metaphors, flat storage with LLM-driven management, or note-taking paradigms, but none incorporate principles from cognitive neuroscience—despite memory science offering over a century of empirically validated models.

We present ZenBrain, a multi-layer memory architecture for AI agents that integrates twelve established neuroscience models into a unified system. ZenBrain implements seven distinct memory layers—working, short-term, episodic, semantic, procedural, core, and cross-context—orchestrated by twelve algorithms including Hebbian learning dynamics for knowledge graph co-activation, Ebbinghaus forgetting curves with FSRS spaced repetition scheduling, sleep-time memory consolidation, Bayesian confidence propagation …

Adaptive Content Pacing And Media Playlist Resolution To Match Dynamic Time Constraints, Thiyagaraj Krishna Apr 2026

Adaptive Content Pacing And Media Playlist Resolution To Match Dynamic Time Constraints, Thiyagaraj Krishna

Defensive Publications Series

Digital media platforms can create fixed-duration playlists that may be misaligned with a user's variable, real-world time constraints, such as a commute, potentially resulting in abrupt content interruptions or periods of silence. This disclosure describes systems and methods for dynamically synchronizing media playback with a time-bound activity. A system can generate an initial media queue to approximate a time budget and can monitor for discrepancies between the remaining content duration and the activity's remaining time. Based on the magnitude of a detected discrepancy, the system can apply a tiered re-calibration mechanism. For example, such a mechanism may include restructuring the …

Covariate Adjustment For Variance Reduction In Online Controlled Experiments, Roy Katz Apr 2026

Covariate Adjustment For Variance Reduction In Online Controlled Experiments, Roy Katz

Defensive Publications Series

Online controlled experiments often struggle to measure small treatment effects in metrics characterized by high variance and long-tailed distributions. Conventional approaches of increasing sample size to mitigate statistical noise can require impractically large user populations or extended experiment durations.  This disclosure describes a system that utilizes pre-experiment data as a covariate within a regression adjustment model to reduce variance in outcome metrics. The system incorporates a data processing pipeline to collect baseline user activity, a power analysis toolkit for prospective efficiency calculations, and an automated bias detection module to monitor group imbalances. By accounting for pre-existing behavioral patterns, the technology …

Multi-Device Interactive Narrative System With An Ai Companion Initialized From Narrative Interaction Data, Qingfei Tian

Defensive Publications Series

On-screen user interfaces for interactive narratives may disrupt immersion and can lack mechanisms for persistent user engagement after a story concludes. A multi-device architecture may be used where a primary display presents cinematic content while a synchronized secondary device, such as a smartphone, smart watch, or other wearable device, manages diegetic user interactions via voice, motion, or touch. A remote server can orchestrate the experience and log user choices. This interaction data can be used to create a profile that contextually initializes a persistent artificial intelligence (AI) companion, seeding it with a memory of the user's specific narrative journey. This …

Experimental Investigation Of Compressive And Wear Behavior Of Polymer/Cnt Nanocomposites, Mohanad J. Hameed Al-Karawi

Terra Joule Journal

Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) has wide usage in structural and tribological applications, but low compressive strength and poor wear resistance limit its performance in load-bearing sliding conditions. This study investigates the impacts of ultra-low concentrations of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) on flexural properties at 0.1, 0.5, and 1 wt. % on the mechanical and frictional behavior of PMMA nanocomposites. The mechanical performance was analyzed by load–displacement and stress–strain analysis, and the wear behavior was studied using a pin-on-disk tribometer under dry sliding conditions. Raman spectroscopy confirmed the successful incorporation of MWCNTs while maintaining their graphitic structure within the polymer matrix. The …

Elucidating The Structure And Binding Nature Of Thianaphthene Dimers Using Gas-Phase Infrared Spectroscopy, Gaia Zucali, Vincent J. Esposito, Sandra Brünken, Piero Ferrari

Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research

Crucial for many biological systems, in astrochemistry, and for fundamental chemistry in general, the conformations adopted by weakly bound complexes of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) have been the focus of debate for decades. Still, there are great challenges in forming such complexes in the laboratory, measuring accurate spectroscopic information sensitive to structure, and computing molecular properties for systems subtly bound by dispersive interactions. Here, we employ a combination of gas-phase infrared spectroscopy with extensive density functional theory (DFT) calculations to unambiguously determine the preferred conformation adopted by dimers of neutral thianaphthene, a PAH composed of one six- and one five-membered …

Luminance-Based Mentally-Generated Images Indicate Pupillary Transformation In Novel Method Of Communication For Non-Verbal Patients, Anna Pak Apr 2026

Luminance-Based Mentally-Generated Images Indicate Pupillary Transformation In Novel Method Of Communication For Non-Verbal Patients, Anna Pak

Honors Theses

Can the luminance level of mentally generated images affect pupil dilation? The purpose of this study is to evaluate whether mental images in the brain can produce a physiological reaction in pupil dilations specifically. The hypothesis is that if a participant mentally generates images of differing luminance levels, then the pupils will either dilate or constrict accordingly. While this study achieved no statistical significance, it should be noted that further research and advancement of the protocol used in this study can potentially be used for non-verbal medical patients as a new means of communication that is easily accessible.

Monitoring Koyna Dam Displacements Using Persistent Scatterer Interferometry, Sara Zouriq, Gehan Hamdy, Amr Fawzy, Rejoice Thomas, Hesham El-Askary, Eehab Khalil, Mohamed Elsayad, Tarik El-Salawaky

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

Monitoring dam stability is critical to ensure structural safety and operational reliability. This study integrates Persistent Scatterer Interferometry (PSI) based on Sentinel-1 SAR imagery (2020–2023) with Finite Element Method (FEM) simulations to assess the behavior of the Koyna Dam in India. PSI detected crest displacements between −1.0 and −1.8 mm yr−1, while FEM simulations predicted a maximum vertical displacement of approximately −3.2 mm at the crest. Although these results represent different quantities (time-averaged displacement rates versus peak static displacement), both approaches indicate millimeter-scale deformation and a consistent pattern of settlement at the dam crest, supporting the interpretation of hydrologically driven …

Publications and Research

Understanding the complicated processes that regulate star formation and cause a galaxy to become quiescent is key to our comprehension of galaxy evolution. We used eight well-resolved star-forming z < 0.3 galaxies from the UVCANDELS survey, where a total of 10 Hubble Space Telescope bands, including UV follow-up in UVIS/F275W, allow us to reconstruct the star formation histories (SFHs) of regions across each galaxy. This approach provides a powerful tool to explore the spatiotemporal connection between star formation and galaxy evolution. The spatial and temporal profiles of stellar mass and star formation rate (SFR) surface density were obtained from the SFHs of these regions. We measure scaling relations and projected radial profiles of regions within each galaxy at the time of observation and at 1 Gyr lookback time, noting possible trends in the evolution. By comparing the change in star formation over time, we can infer the timing and location of star formation and see early signs of star formation shutting off before quenching occurs. We compared the SFR density–stellar mass density scaling relations for individual galaxies as they evolve from 1 Gyr lookback time. The correlation lines pivot around a log-stellar mass surface density of 7.25 [M⊙ kpc−2], which may be evidence of a self-regulating process on these scales. Radial profiles of the galaxy logarithmic specific SFR (sSFR) show an overall decrease over 1 Gyr, but five galaxies show a greater change in log(sSFR) at the outskirts than the center, indicating a possible early onset of quenching in these galaxies.

Redesigning Dbl Training Materials, Paula M. Espinoza Cardenas Apr 2026

Redesigning Dbl Training Materials, Paula M. Espinoza Cardenas

Instructional Psychology and Technology Graduate Student Projects

This project focused on redesigning Decision-based Learning (DBL) training materials in Spanish to make them easier to understand and use for university educators. The materials were improved over several iterations based on feedback collected during workshops and open-ended surveys completed by educators and trainers. The feedback was organized into themes to identify common challenges.

The results showed that unclear instructions, long documents, navigation problems, and translation issues made it harder for educators to use the materials and feel confident using the DBL software. In response, the materials were revised to be shorter, more structured, and visually clearer. Additional resources were …
