Re-Imagining International Human Rights Education In Our Time: Beyond Three Constitutive Orthodoxies, Obiora Chinedu Okafor, Shedrack C. Agbakwa Jan 2001

Re-Imagining International Human Rights Education In Our Time: Beyond Three Constitutive Orthodoxies, Obiora Chinedu Okafor, Shedrack C. Agbakwa

Articles & Book Chapters

This article seeks to show that both the conceptualization and practice of international human rights education within the mainstream human rights community has been shaped and framed, with mostly negative consequences, by at least three constitutive orthodoxies: a heaven-hell binary distinction between an all but "perfect" West and an all but "hellish" Third World, a consequent unidirectional traffic of human rights teaching from the West to the rest, and a reliance on the abolitionist paradigm of human rights education. It starts by mapping these orthodoxies, and proceeds thereafter to challenge them as fundamentally problematic and as capable of frustrating the …

Comparison Of Statistical And Model-Based Hindcasts Of Subtidal Water Levels In Chesapeake Bay, Kathryn Thompson Bosley, Kurt W. Hess Jan 2001

Comparison Of Statistical And Model-Based Hindcasts Of Subtidal Water Levels In Chesapeake Bay, Kathryn Thompson Bosley, Kurt W. Hess

CCPO Publications

Subtidal water levels in Chesapeake Bay, which can have amplitudes as large as 1 m at Baltimore, are an important component of total water levels. The most importance forcing mechanisms for these variations are surface winds over the Bay and coastal subtidal water levels. Two methods for hindcasting subtidal water levels in the Bay were developed: statistical prediction (based on multiple linear regression) and a barotropic numerical circulation model-based prediction. The hindcast water levels were compared with the observed values at three key locations (Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel (CBBT) in the lower bay near the mouth, Solomons Island at midbay, …

The Law-Making Role Of The Supreme Court Of Canada: Rapporteur's Synthesis, Peter W. Hogg Jan 2001

The Law-Making Role Of The Supreme Court Of Canada: Rapporteur's Synthesis, Peter W. Hogg

Articles & Book Chapters

The adoption of the Charter of Rights in 1982 thrust a new role on the Supreme Court of Canada. The Court was required to resolve issues that would formerly have been regarded as matters of policy for the legislative bodies. This article shows that the new policy-making role of the Court has carried over into non-Charter fields, such as federalism, evidence, administrative law, torts, and family law.

Topologically Pure Extensions, Peter Loth Jan 2001

Topologically Pure Extensions, Peter Loth

Mathematics Faculty Publications

A proper short exact sequence 0→H →G→K→0 (*) in the category of locally compact abelian groups is said to be topologically pure if the induced sequence 0→nH→nG→nK→0 is proper short exact for all positive integers n. Some characterizations of topologically pure sequences in terms of direct decompositions, pure extensions and tensor products are established. A simple proof is given for a theorem on pure subgroups by Hartman and Hulanickl. Using topologically pure extensions, we characterize those splitting locally compact abelian groups whose torsion part is a direct sum of a compact …

Morality, Religion, And Public Bioethics: Shifting The Paradigm For The Public Discussion Of Embryo Research And Human Cloning, Brian Stiltner Jan 2001

Morality, Religion, And Public Bioethics: Shifting The Paradigm For The Public Discussion Of Embryo Research And Human Cloning, Brian Stiltner

Philosophy, Theology and Religious Studies Faculty Publications

Public ethics bodies play a major role in the development of public policies that govern scientific research and health care.' Their tasks include weighing the ethical ramifications of forms of research, educating the public about the research and its likely benefits, and recommending directions for institutional practices and legal policies. Much debate about public ethics bodies has concerned the mode and level of their ethical reasoning. Should public ethics bodies develop substantive moral arguments on issues that are subject to widely divergent moral and religious interpretations, such as the status of the human embryo? To develop such arguments would, of …

Women Writing Auto/Biography: Anna Banti’S Artemisia And Eunice Lipton’S Alias Olympia, Claire Marrone

Languages Faculty Publications

Neat definitions of biographical and autobiographical writing have been challenged in the twentieth century. This essay offers a comparative study of two texts which may be classified as autobiography or biography or both, and which, because of their blurred generic boundaries, bring to light several theoretical questions about life writing.

Community Involvement: A Comparison Of Corporate And Individual Perceptions, Values, Attitudes, And Actions, Jacqueline K. Humpal

Honors Capstones

Community involvement has become an important part of the social responsibility initiatives of many corporations. Many researchers have studied corporate social responsibility, as well as individual volunteerism; however, the activities of these generally have been studied separately, resulting in a relatively scant literature on the intersection of corporate and individual community involvement. The study reported herein was designed to address this deficiency, specifically by searching for linkages in values and practices between corporations and individuals. The study was conducted in two phases. In Phase I, interviews were conducted with the Human Resources Directors of six organizations in a Midwestern city …

Petitions For Life: Executive Clemency In Missouri Death Penalty Cases, Cathleen Burnett Jan 2001

Petitions For Life: Executive Clemency In Missouri Death Penalty Cases, Cathleen Burnett

Richmond Public Interest Law Review

The thesis of this article is that low reversal rates mean serious errors are not being detected and corrected. The research will focus on Missouri, which has very low reversal rates of 15% in federal court and 20% in state court. The data to address this question comes from the clemency petitions submitted to the governor as the last step in the process of executing the death penalty. These petitions illustrate the range and magnitude of the claims of legal problems in one state. The clemency petitions provide the most complete and full statement of the condemned's case, because these …

Effects Of Immigrant Status On Mexicans In The United States, Michelle Monique Balan Jan 2001

Effects Of Immigrant Status On Mexicans In The United States, Michelle Monique Balan

LSU Master's Theses

This thesis analyzes the relationship between immigration and mental health. I used data from a health and migration study of Mexican immigrant women in a Houston community. I found a statistically significant negative relationship between family social support and feelings of depression. Thus, family social support may have buffered some harmful effects of immigrating to the United States. However, I found inconsistent results with labor market variables that may be due to a measurement problem. Both employment variables were statistically significant (p<.05) for models (predictor, predictor and control) including loss of interest and these variables remained significant after control variables were added. Unfortunately, only one of the work variables--the number of months the respondent worked--was in the predicted direction. Contrary to expectations, the other employment variable (ever worked) was negatively related to a loss of interest in previously pleasurable activities.
