The Recruitment And Retention Of Students Of Color At Private Institutions, Anthony Cortese Oct 2001

The Recruitment And Retention Of Students Of Color At Private Institutions, Anthony Cortese

Different Perspectives on Majority Rules: 6th Annual National Conference (2001)

This session presents a longitudinal study of recruitment and retention of students of color at a predominantly white university in the American Southwest. The institution was able to increase minority student enrollment 14 percent in fewer than ten years. This was accomplished through the careful development, implementation and evaluation of a policy designed to recruit and retain minority students. The specifics of this policy and how it may be used as a model for other predominantly white institutions are discussed.

A Case Study: Contemporary Forms Of Bias And "Prejudice" And How It Negatively Impacts Scholars Of Color Within The Academy, E. Kelly Sanford Ph.D.

Different Perspectives on Majority Rules: 6th Annual National Conference (2001)

The session presents a Case Study to identify contemporary forms of bias that scholars of color inevitably experience from the classroom discourse to the tenure process. While “academic freedom” and the notion of “ diversity” are apparent politically correct ideals in theory, the reality is different on the average for scholars of color.

Engaging In Difficult Dialogues Beyond Color: Where Do You Draw The Line Between Race, Gender And Authority In The Classroom?, Safoura A. Boukari

Different Perspectives on Majority Rules: 6th Annual National Conference (2001)

Grounding the discussion in Check Anta Diop’s Cradle theory, this paper invites us for a critical thinking and questioning of the very existence, the relevance of the color concept itself alongside the negative and detrimental impacts color has on, especially, Black women in academia. Historical, anthropological, scientific findings and theorists of the “Monogenesis” like, Asa G. Hilliard III (Free Your Mind: Return to the Source) traced the human origin back to a single human being, a woman, more than 10.000 years ago. In reference to the current trend, skin color could be defined as nothing, but the result of an …

Retention, Mentoring And The Mythological Need For The Other: Specifically Designed, With Urban Youth In Mind, Gene Kwame Scruggs

Different Perspectives on Majority Rules: 6th Annual National Conference (2001)

Through mythological stories, participants are given assistance in their personal journeys. Stories focus on mentoring, long-term gratification, the rewards of persistence and the archetypal need to blossom. The specific group process has consistently created introspection and provided a sense of encouragement for the participant to speak to their calling.

For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

Evidence-Based Medicine : An Overview, Kamlesh Bhargava, Roman Jaeschke Oct 2001

Evidence-Based Medicine : An Overview, Kamlesh Bhargava, Roman Jaeschke

Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal

Evidence-based Medicine (EBM) has been proposed as the most significant intellectual advance in the process of clinical decision-making in the past decade. With more than 25,000 medical journals publishing 4 million articles a year, doctors are unable to cope with the information overload. The principles and practice of EBM show the way to bridge the gap between research and practice. Reactions evoked in the medical profession towards this new discipline have been in extremes, from outright rejection to enthusiastic acceptance. The goal of this paper is to familiarise the readers with the ideas and concepts associated with the phrase Evidence-based …

Foreign Bodies In The Upper Aero-Digestive Tract, Murty Psn, Vijendra S. Ingle, Ramakrishna Shah, Fahim A., Varghese Philip

Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal

Foreign bodies in the upper aero-digestive tract pose major challenges to the otolaryngologist in both diagnosis and management. Aspirated and ingested foreign bodies are often emergencies, leading to inadequate study and poorly prepared, improper attempts at removal. The authors share their experience in managing upper aero-digestive tract foreign bodies in Omani population at a district hospital, present a statistical review of 58 cases, and highlight certain critical scenarios as well as cultural variations specific to the region.

Publications (YM)

Starting on October 1, 1995, the monitoring of seismicity within the southern Great Basin near Yucca Mountain was performed with a new digital network. This network features three-component recording with 24-bit A/D conversion in the field. Continuous data are collected at 20 sps, and event triggered windows are collected at 100 sps. A seismic bulletin of events is made by automatically associating triggers among stations, classifying the local earthquake events, and locating the earthquakes and computing their magnitudes with conventional methods. This report covers the operational and seismic results of the fifth full year (FYOO) of the improved, digitally based, …
