The Best Of Times And The Worst Of Times: Lessons From Recent Reforms Of The French Retirement System, Kathryn L. Moore Jan 2001

The Best Of Times And The Worst Of Times: Lessons From Recent Reforms Of The French Retirement System, Kathryn L. Moore

Law Faculty Scholarly Articles

Principally because of increasing life expectancy and the fact that the baby boom generation is reaching retirement age and is followed by a much smaller generation, the American social security system is facing a long-term funding deficit. The Board of Trustees of the Federal Old-Age and Survivors and Disability Trust Funds predicts that unless corrective action is taken, social security benefits will exceed dedicated tax revenues by the year 2016, and the social security system will become insolvent, that is, unable to pay benefits in full, by the year 2038.

The United States is not alone in facing these circumstances. …

Measurements of peroxycarboxylic nitric anhydrides (PANs) made in Houston, Texas during TexAQS (Texas Air Quality Study) 2000 showed a relatively abundant PAN compound that had not been identified in previous studies in North America [cf. Williams et al., 2000]. This compound was hypothesized to be peroxyacrylic nitric anhydride { CH2=CHC(O)OONO2, APAN} based on the work of Tanimoto and Akimoto, [2001]. APAN was synthesized and characterized on one of the two GC systems used to make those measurements, subsequent to the TexAQS 2000 field study, confirming that APAN was observed during TexAQS 2000, both on the ground and in airborne measurements. …

An Analysis Of The Irs’S Voluntary Disclosure Policy, Allen Madison Jan 2001

An Analysis Of The Irs’S Voluntary Disclosure Policy, Allen Madison

Faculty Publications

When a taxpayer files a fraudulent return but amends it before the IRS begins a criminal investigation, the IRS has a long-standing policy that it will not refer that taxpayer to the Department of Justice for prosecution. This policy is known as the Voluntary Disclosure Policy. Such a policy allows taxpayers who have fallen off the tax rolls to get right with the government, which in turn helps the government by increasing revenues without the expense of investigation and enforcement. Over the Policy's history, the IRS has tinkered with it, at times keeping it in written form and at other …

"Under The Umbrella Of Black Civilization": A Conversation With Reginald Mcknight, Bertram D. Ashe Jan 2001

"Under The Umbrella Of Black Civilization": A Conversation With Reginald Mcknight, Bertram D. Ashe

English Faculty Publications

Talking to Reginald McKnight is like scanning an imaginary worldwide radio dial. At any given moment he can transform his pleasant speaking voice into a raspy, aged, Middle Eastern-by-way-of-New York accent - or a deep Southern drawl. In an instant he can switch from a precise West African dialect to hip, urban street lingo, and then effortlessly segue back to his normal voice. McKnight says he "hit the ground running" as a mimic, and his talent was broadened as he lived all over the United States as the son of an Air Force sergeant. His time spent on the road …

Receptor Number And Caveolar Co-Localization Determine Receptor Coupling Efficiency To Adenylyl Cyclase, Rennolds S. Ostrom, Caroline Gregorian, Ryan M. Drenan, Yang Xiang, John W. Regan, Paul A. Insel

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

Recent evidence suggests that many signaling molecules localize in microdomains of the plasma membrane, particularly caveolae. In this study, overexpression of adenylyl cyclase was used as a functional probe of G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) compartmentation. We found that three endogenous receptors in neonatal rat cardiomyocytes couple with different levels of efficiency to the activation of adenylyl cyclase type 6 (AC6), which localizes to caveolin-rich membrane fractions. Overexpression of AC6 enhanced the maximal cAMP response to β1-adrenergic receptor (β1AR)-selective activation 3.7-fold, to β2AR-selective activation only 1.6-fold and to prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) not at all. Therefore, the rank order of efficacy in …

Job Attitudes Of 911 Professionals: A Case Study Of Turnover Intentions And Concerns Among Local Governments Throughout Central Florida, Erik C. Cerbulis Jan 2001

Job Attitudes Of 911 Professionals: A Case Study Of Turnover Intentions And Concerns Among Local Governments Throughout Central Florida, Erik C. Cerbulis

HIM 1990-2015

The purpose of this study was to understand turnover intentions of 911 workers and to identify job factors that are related to turnover. Serving as the link between the public and police, fire and ambulance services, 911 operators work behind the scenes; under stressful conditions and often times without recognition or appreciation. Across the nation, there is a high rate of turnover.by 911 operators and a difficulty in recruiting competent personnel to replace them. A cross-sectional survey research study was conducted using 911 operators from police departments throughout Central Florida. A questionnaire was developed using a combination of established questions, …

Studying The Relationship Between Parental Involvement And Sternberg's Triarchic Theory Of Intelligence, Liliana Munoz Bailey Jan 2001

Studying The Relationship Between Parental Involvement And Sternberg's Triarchic Theory Of Intelligence, Liliana Munoz Bailey

HIM 1990-2015

Extensive research has been conducted in the area of intelligence. Most of the research in this area has been focused on cognitive abilities. However, little research has been explored other type of intelligence and the environmental factors. The intent of this study was to investigate Sternberg’s Theory of Intelligence and parental involvement. According to this theory an individual’s intelligence is composed of three main domains: cognitive, creative and practical. Every individual possesses these abilities to a greater or lesser degree. Yet, little is known of what factors could lead to the difference in these types of abilities in individuals. Parental …

The Marsokhod rover returned data from six stations that were used to decipher the geomorphology and geology of a region not previously visited by members of the geomorphology field team. Satellite images and simulated descent images provided information about the regional setting. The landing zone was on an alluvial apron flanking a mountain block to the west and a playa surface to the east. Rover color images, infrared spectra analysis of the mountains, and the apron surface provided insight into the rock composition of the nearby mountains. From the return data the geomorphology team interpreted the region to consist of …

Faculty Bibliography 2000s

On April 15 and 19, 1998, two intense dust storms were generated over the Gobi desert by springtime low-pressure systems descending from the northwest. The windblown dust was detected and its evolution followed by its yellow color on SeaWiFS satellite images, routine surface-based monitoring, and through serendipitous observations. The April 15 dust cloud was recirculating, and it was removed by a precipitating weather system over east Asia. The April 19 dust cloud crossed the Pacific Ocean in 5 days, subsided to the surface along the mountain ranges between British Columbia and California, and impacted severely the optical and the concentration …

Morphological Operations On Color Images, Lloyd J. Sartor, Arthur R. Weeks Jan 2001

Morphological Operations On Color Images, Lloyd J. Sartor, Arthur R. Weeks

Faculty Bibliography 2000s

Morphological image processing has been widely used to process binary and grayscale images, with morphological techniques being applied to noise reduction, image enhancement, and feature detection. Relying on an ordering of the data, morphology modifies the geometrical aspects of an image: object contours in binary images and object surfaces in grayscale images. Extending morphological operators to color image processing has been problematic because it is not easy to define geometry of a vector-valued function and ordering of vectors is not straightforward We propose a new set of color morphological operators based on a combination of reduced ordering and conditional ordering …

Faculty Bibliography 2000s

Since little is known of how the primitive protozoan parasite, Giardia lamblia, senses and responds to its changing environment, we characterized a giardial protein kinase A (gPKA) catalytic subunit with unusual subcellular localization. Sequence analysis of the 1080-base pair open reading frame shows 48% amino acid identity with the cyclic AMP-dependent kinase from Euglena gracilis, Northern analysis indicated a 1.28-kilobase pair transcript at relatively constant concentrations during growth and encystation, gPKA is autophosphorylated, although amino acid residues corresponding to Thr-197 and Ser-338 of human protein kinase A (PKA) that are important for autophosphorylation are absent, Kinetic analysis of the recombinant …

Faculty Bibliography 2000s

We report on a field experiment held near Silver Lake playa in the Mojave Desert in February 1999 with the Marsokhod rover. The payload (Descent Imager, PanCam, Mini-TES, and Robotic Arm Camera), data volumes, and data transmission/receipt windows simulated those planned for the Mars Surveyor mission selected for 2001. A central mast with a pan and tilt platform at 150 cm height carried a high-resolution color stereo imager to simulate the PanCam and a visible/near-infrared fiberoptic spectrometer (operating range 0.35-2.5 mum). Monochrome stereo navigation cameras were mounted on the mast and the front and rear of the rover near the …

Photoelectron Spectrometry Of Atomic Scandium In The Region Of The 3p - > 3d Giant Resonance, S. B. Whitfield, K. Kehoe, R. Wehlitz, M. O. Krause, C. D. Caldwell

Faculty Bibliography 2000s

A determination of the relative partial photoionization cross sections of the 3d and 4s main lines and associated satellite lines of atomic scandium in the region of the 3p-- > nd,ms excitations has been carried out using electron spectrometry in conjunction with monochromatized synchrotron radiation. The superior resolution inherent in these measurements has revealed additional structure not previously seen in earlier experimental work, highlighting the rich and complex structure of this relatively simple open-shell atom. Relative intensities and binding energies of the 3p photolines are also reported. A comparison with recent many-body perturbation theory calculations in LS coupling shows only marginal …

Fictional Teeth, Linda Dyer Jan 2001

Fictional Teeth, Linda Dyer

Ahsahta Press

In her debut volume Fictional Teeth, Linda Dyer sorted out the world by pinpointing the unexpected connections that help it make sense, and turns the run-on tumbling syntax of an excited child into the medium for poems that first amuse, then haunt the reader. Venturing the territories of family and loss, persistence and hope, Dyer’s voice is wry and inventive in these poems, where a crayfish can be a child’s pet, a lover’s makeshift ashtray an erotic lure, office supplies a convenient resource for makeovers.
