An Assessment Of The Status Of White-Faced Ibis (Plegadis Chihi) In The Great Plains, Joel G. Jorgensen, Stephen J. Dinsmore Jan 2001

An Assessment Of The Status Of White-Faced Ibis (Plegadis Chihi) In The Great Plains, Joel G. Jorgensen, Stephen J. Dinsmore

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: Staff Research Publications

Recent increase of White-faced Ibis (Plegadis chihi) in the Great Plains have been considered a "reoccupation" of the species' former range. Review of the published literature and specimen record, however, indicates that this species has only recently become a regular breeder in the Great Plains; thus, recent patterns of summering and nesting birds in the region are best considered a range expansion. Currently, this species is increasing in the Great Plains, where it is an uncommon migrant and local breeder. Extralimital records of this species are also increasing, both along the Atlantic Coast and the Gulf Coast, probably …

Remote Sensing Of Biotic Effects: Zebra Mussels (Dreissena Polymorpha) Influence On Water Clarity In Saginaw Bay, Lake Huron, Judith W. Budd, Thomas D. Drummer, Thomas F. Nalepa, Gary L. Fahnenstiel Jan 2001

Remote Sensing Of Biotic Effects: Zebra Mussels (Dreissena Polymorpha) Influence On Water Clarity In Saginaw Bay, Lake Huron, Judith W. Budd, Thomas D. Drummer, Thomas F. Nalepa, Gary L. Fahnenstiel

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

In this study, Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) remote sensing reflectance (Rrs), imagery from 1987–1993 is used to study changes in water clarity before and after zebra mussels (Dreissena polymorpha) were discovered in Saginaw Bay, Lake Huron. Spatial and temporal trends in the data indicate distinct and persistent increases in water clarity in the inner bay after the first large recruitment of zebra mussels in the fall of 1991. The pre-Dreissena imagery show that turbidity in the inner bay was influenced by the Saginaw River discharge in spring, biological production (plankton) in summer, and …

At-Satellite Reflectance: A First Order Normalization Of Landsat 7 Etm+ Images, Chengquan Huang, Limin Yang, Collin Homer, Bruce K. Wylie, James E. Vogelmann, Thomas Defelice Jan 2001

At-Satellite Reflectance: A First Order Normalization Of Landsat 7 Etm+ Images, Chengquan Huang, Limin Yang, Collin Homer, Bruce K. Wylie, James E. Vogelmann, Thomas Defelice

United States Geological Survey: Publications

Regional Landsat applications often rely on clear and near cloud-free images. With the spectral value being represented by digital number (DN), however, such images contain substantial noises. A significant proportion of such noises can be normalized by converting the DN to at-satellite reflectance value. Being physically based and ready to automate, the conversion method can serve as a first order normalization of Landsat 7 images, making it possible to derive land surface information from such images more consistently.

A Strategy For Estimating Tree Canopy Density Using Landsat 7 Etm+ And High Resolution Images Over Large Areas, C. Huang, Limin Yang, Bruce K. Wylie, Collin Homer

United States Geological Survey: Publications

INTRODUCTION

The Multi-Resolution Land Characteristics (MRLC) consortium was initiated in early 1990s to address the need for consistently developed national and regional land cover data (Loveland and Shaw, 1996). Through this consortium, a 1992-vintage National Land Cover Dataset (NLCD) was developed for the conterminous United States (Vogelmann et al., 2001), and a second generation National Land Cover Dataset (NLCD 2000) will be developed using 2000-vintage Landsat 7 Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM+) images and ancillary data. The 2000 NLCD will consist of a suite of data layers relevant to many applications, including a tree canopy density layer describing percentage of …

Solubilization Of Fe(Iii) Oxide-Bound Trace Metals By A Dissimilatory Fe(Iii) Reducing Bacterium, John M. Zachara, James K. Fredrickson, Steven Smith, Paul Gassman Jan 2001

Solubilization Of Fe(Iii) Oxide-Bound Trace Metals By A Dissimilatory Fe(Iii) Reducing Bacterium, John M. Zachara, James K. Fredrickson, Steven Smith, Paul Gassman

United States Department of Energy: Publications

Trace metals associate with Fe(III) oxides as adsorbed or coprecipitated species, and consequently, the biogeochemical cycles of iron and the trace metals are closely linked. This communication investigated the solubilization of coprecipitated Co(III) and Ni(II) from goethite (α-FeOOH) during dissimilatory bacterial iron reduction to provide insights on biogeochemical factors controlling trace-element fluxes in anoxic environments. Suspensions of homogeneously substituted Co-FeOOH (50 mmol/L as Co0.01Fe0.99OOH; 57Co-labeled) in eight different buffer/media solutions were inoculated with a facultative, metal-reducing bacteria isolated from groundwater (Shewanella putrefacians CN32), and incubated under strictly anaerobic conditions for periods up to 32 …

Meiotic Recombination, Cross-Reactivity, And Persistence In Plasmodium Falciparum, F. Ellis Mckenzie, Marcelo U. Ferreira, J. Kevin Baird, Georges Snounou, William H. Bossert Jan 2001

Meiotic Recombination, Cross-Reactivity, And Persistence In Plasmodium Falciparum, F. Ellis Mckenzie, Marcelo U. Ferreira, J. Kevin Baird, Georges Snounou, William H. Bossert

United States Navy: Publications

We incorporate a representation of Plasmodium falciparum recombination within a discrete-event model of malaria transmission. We simulate the introduction of a new parasite genotype into a human population in which another genotype has reached equilibrium prevalence and compare the emergence and persistence of the novel recombinant forms under differing cross-reactivity relationships between the genotypes. Cross-reactivity between the parental (initial and introduced) genotypes reduces the frequency of appearance of recombinants within three years of introduction from 100% to 14%, and delays their appearance by more than a year, on average. Cross-reactivity between parental and recombinant genotypes reduces the frequency of appearance …

Legionella Pneumophila Entry Gene Rtxa Is Involved In Virulence, Suat L. G. Cirillo, Luis E. Bermudez, Sahar H. El-Etr, Gerald Duhamel, Jeffrey D. Cirillo

School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications

Successful parasitism of host cells by intracellular pathogens involves adherence, entry, survival, intracellular replication, and cell-to-cell spread. Our laboratory has been examining the role of early events, adherence and entry, in the pathogenesis of the facultative intracellular pathogen Legionella pneumophila. Currently, the mechanisms used by L. pneumophila to gain access to the intracellular environment are not well understood. We have recently isolated three loci, designated enh1, enh2, and enh3, that are involved in the ability of L. pneumophila to enter host cells. One of the genes present in the enh1 locus, rtxA, is homologous to repeats …

The Spatial Variability Of Energy And Carbon Dioxide Fluxes At The Floor Of A Deciduous Forest, Kell B. Wilson, Tilden Meyers Jan 2001

The Spatial Variability Of Energy And Carbon Dioxide Fluxes At The Floor Of A Deciduous Forest, Kell B. Wilson, Tilden Meyers

United States Bureau of Land Management: Staff Publications

Fluxes of carbon dioxide, water and sensible heat were measured using three different eddy covariance systems above the forest floor of a closed deciduous forest (leaf area index ~ 6). The primary objective was to examine the representativeness of a single eddy covariance system in estimating soil respiration for time scales ranging from one-half hour to more than one week. Experiments were conducted in which the eddy covariance sensors were in one of three configurations: i) collocated, ii) separated horizontally or iii) separated vertically. A measure of the variation between the three systems (CV' 0, related to the coefficient of …

Replacing Conventionally Processed Soybean Meal With Extruded/Expelled Soybean Meal In Swine Diets, Andrea M. Tucker, Phillip S. Miller, Austin Lewis, Duane Reese

Nebraska Swine Reports

The effects of extruded/expelled soybean meal (ESBM) on growth performance and carcass composition of pigs from weaning to slaughter were investigated. Two experiments were conducted. In the first experiment, weaned pigs were fed a diet containing either conventional solvent-extracted soybean meal or ESBM. Average daily gain and feed efficiency were greater in pigs fed the control diet. The second experiment was designed to determine whether nursery diet influenced performance during the growing-finishing period. In the second experiment, half of the pigs from Experiment 1 were assigned to either a control or ESBM diet and were fed until slaughter. Average daily …

Multilayer Mim Inversion Of Aem Data: Theory And Field Example, Clyde J. Bergeron Jr, Juliette W. Ioup, Yan Wu, George E. Ioup, Kenneth W. Holladay

Physics Faculty Publications

This paper presents a multilayer generalization of an algebraic method of inverting frequency-doma in airborne active electromagnetic (AEM) data in terms of 1-D layered earth models. The processing of the AEM data, which includes a recalibration procedure, is also outlined. The inversion is applied to synthetic fields generated from a multilayer model which is intended to approximate a measured conductivity profile of the water column in the Gulf of Mexico and to measured AEM data from a survey of the Barataria Bay estuary region of the Louisiana Gulf of Mexico coast. The inversion results from the synthetic data are in …

Whether, When, And How To Tax The Profits Of Controlled Foreign Corporations, John P. Steines Jr. Jan 2001

Whether, When, And How To Tax The Profits Of Controlled Foreign Corporations, John P. Steines Jr.

Faculty Articles

Among the choices of how the United States could tax the earnings of controlled foreign corporations (CFCs) are these: (1) exempt the income from tax permanently; (2) accrue the income currently and grant either a credit or deduction for foreign taxes; or, (3) defer taxation until repatriation and allow a credit or deduction for foreign taxes at that time. The present system reflects aspects of all three approaches, but mainly accords deferral with a foreign tax credit upon repatriation, except for income taxed currently (actually or effectively) under anti-deferral regimes such as subpart F and the passive foreign investment company …

Choice And Federal Intervention In Corporate Law, Stephen J. Choi, Andrew T. Guzman Jan 2001

Choice And Federal Intervention In Corporate Law, Stephen J. Choi, Andrew T. Guzman

Faculty Articles

In a recent and provocative essay, Lucian Bebchuk and Allen Ferrell put forward a proposal for takeover-related corporate law that they contend 'dominates' the present system of state competition. They advocate in favor of a new federal takeover regime combined with a mandatory choice rule through which shareholders may force a corporation to opt into the new federal regime. We applaud Bebchuk and Ferrell's proposal in so far it expands the amount of choice available to corporations and thereby increases competition within the market for takeover-related legal rules. While some choice makes the present system better, we argue that greater …

Markets And Geography: Designing Marketable Permit Schemes To Control Local And Regional Pollutants, Jonathan Remy Nash, Richard L. Revesz

Faculty Articles

In recent years, there has been a steady rise in the use of marketable permits in environmental regulation. They have been employed as tools to control both air and water pollution, and have been implemented on local, regional, and national scales. These trading regimes - based upon a single market in emission permits - do not control the distribution of emissions throughout the trading region or prevent the formation of hot spots of pollution. Over the years, commentators have advocated several alternative design structures to deal with these problems. Each of these alternatives, however, has significant drawbacks, either providing only …
