Selenocysteine is a rare amino acid in protein that is encoded by UGA with the requirement of a downstream mRNA stem-loop structure, the selenocysteine insertion sequence element. To detect selenoproteins in Drosophila, the entire genome was analyzed with a novel program that searches for selenocysteine insertion sequence elements, followed by selenoprotein gene signature analyses. This computational screen and subsequent metabolic labeling with 75Se and characterization of selenoprotein mRNA expression resulted in identification of three selenoproteins: selenophosphate synthetase 2 and novel G-rich and BthD selenoproteins that had no homology to known proteins. To assess a biological role for these …

Photovoltaics In Disaster Management, Florida Solar Energy Center, William Young

FSEC Energy Research Center®

Man made or natural, disasters can happen at any time, often with little or no advance warning. Major disasters, such as hurricanes, floods, tornados, and earthquakes, can leave many people without adequate medical services, potable water, electrical service and communications. They can be as destructive as Hurricane Mitch leaving several hundred-thousand people homeless or as minor as an afternoon thunderstorm knocking down local power lines to your home.

In response to a disaster, photovoltaic (solar electric) modules offer a source of quiet, safe, pollution-free electrical power. Photovoltaic (PV) power systems are capable of providing the electrical needs for vaccine refrigerators, …

Communicating About Mass Communication: A National Study Of The Content, Functionality, And Value Of University Mass Communication Program World Wide Web Sites, Douglas J. Swanson

Journalism

A study was undertaken to assess college and university mass communication program World Wide Web site content, functionality, and value, and to gauge faculty members' opinions related to Web site creation and maintenance. Descriptive statistics, analysis of variance and t-tests were used to address three hypotheses relating to Web site use by academic programs and related perceptions of social order by faculty: Most programs had an operational Web site. Site enhancements varied widely while most faculty members' opinions were thematically consistent.

Control Of Laser Cladding For Rapid Prototyping -- A Review, Mallikharjuna R. Boddu, Robert G. Landers, Frank W. Liou

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Lasers have wide-ranging applications in the manufacturing field (e.g., cladding, welding, cutting, machining, drilling). Extensive work is being conducted to apply laser cladding as a Rapid Prototyping (RP) process. In this paper the authors illustrate various principles of laser cladding in rapid prototyping. Important process parameters for the control of the laser cladding process are discussed as well as the experimental methods adopted, and results obtained by, various authors.

Research And Development Of A Hybrid Rapid Manufacturing Process, Frank W. Liou, J. Choi, Robert G. Landers, Vijayakumar Janardhan, S. N. Balakrishnan, Sanjeev Agarwal

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper presents the research and development of a hybrid rapid manufacturing process being developed at the University of Missouri--Rolla. This process includes a laser deposition and a 5- axis CNC milling system. By combining laser deposition and machining processes, the resulting hybrid process can provide greater build capability and better accuracy and surface finish. The hybrid process can build some features that are difficult to build in using a purely deposition processes. The issues and related approaches in the research and development of the hybrid deposition-machining process, including laser deposition process, system design and integration, process planning, and sensor …

A Dissertation On African American Male Youth Violence: "Trying To Kill The Part Of You That Isn’T Loved", Joy Degruy Leary Aug 2001

A Dissertation On African American Male Youth Violence: "Trying To Kill The Part Of You That Isn’T Loved", Joy Degruy Leary

Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation is based on Sociocultural Theory, Social Learning Theory and Trauma Theory, as well as a new theoretical framework (Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome) which takes into account multigenerational trauma. Five research questions involving independent variables believed to predict violent behavior in African American male youth were investigated. The first three questions addressed stressors experienced by African Americans: violence witnessing, violence victimization, and daily urban hassles. The fourth and fifth questions concerned the sociocultural characteristics of racial socialization and prosocial attitudes toward respect. Participants were 200 African American male youth residing in inner Northeast Portland, Oregon who were recruited from …
