The Little Probe That Could! (A Story Of Mission Impossible Engineering) , T. Adams, D. Downs, G. Murphy, K. Neal

Small Satellite Conference

Starting with the Space Shuttle flight 4A (Nov. 30, 2000), the International Space Station (ISS) power system employs large, high voltage, solar arrays with the negative ground tied to chassis. An intense study by a NASA sponsored Tiger Team in the early ‘90s determined that this configuration leads to the structure being at a high negative potential relative to the local plasma (approximately 140v negative without any intervention) and, that at any potential greater than around 70v negative, the anodized aluminum structure and its components will undergo destructive arcing. A set of plasma contactor units (PCUs) was deployed to provide …

Efficient Satellite Structural Design Optimised For Volume Production, Angelos Tsinas, Christopher Welch Aug 2001

Efficient Satellite Structural Design Optimised For Volume Production, Angelos Tsinas, Christopher Welch

Small Satellite Conference

In the past, the limited number and production volume of satellites has meant that their structural design has been essentially a one-off procedure. As a result, the most common choice of primary structural medium has been metal. Although eminently reliable and highly proven, this option has led to a comparatively high structural mass fraction of 20-24%. The emergence of communications satellite constellations creates the need for a complete reappraisal of current design practices. Emphasis needs to be given in the implementation of volume production methods, already matured through experience in the aviation industry, to manufacture of satellites. The prospect of …

A Feasibility Study Of Micro-Satellites For Earth Observation, Joshua Levi, Peter Washabaugh Aug 2001

A Feasibility Study Of Micro-Satellites For Earth Observation, Joshua Levi, Peter Washabaugh

Small Satellite Conference

There is a continuing desire to minimize the fabrication, launch, and operational costs of Earth-observing satellites, while still maintaining their high-resolution capabilities. Micro-satellites have been suggested as a method for obtaining these results using several different configurations; such as conventional filled aperture optics, distributed aperture systems, constellations and tethers. The ability of the different spacecraft types to achieve images of a specified resolution and quality are examined, as are their affects on the mass and size of the spacecraft. However, first a minimum spacecraft size is discussed and formulated for missions of this and similar types. This is used as …

Crafti: A Canadian Asteroid Mission, Henry Spencer, Alex Beattie, Robert Zee

Small Satellite Conference

Historically, planetary exploration has been performed using large, complex, and costly spacecraft that have attempted to bring a laboratory of instruments with them. Only in the early days of the American and Russian space programs were the missions less complex and more focused. The Canadian Robotic Asteroid Flyby and Tentatively Impact (CRAFTI) mission proposes to return to some of the philosophies of that era, and to bring modern microsatellite design philosophies into planetary exploration. The CRAFTI mission is a concept study being undertaken by the University of Toronto Institute of Aerospace Studies Space Flight Laboratory (UTIAS-SFL) and the Canadian Space …

Single Injection Earth Return Trajectory Options For Small Spacecraft Missions To The Moon, Cesar Ocampo, Shawn Hayes, Robert Twiggs Aug 2001

Single Injection Earth Return Trajectory Options For Small Spacecraft Missions To The Moon, Cesar Ocampo, Shawn Hayes, Robert Twiggs

Small Satellite Conference

There exist several classes of high energy trajectories that are injected from Earth centered orbits to deep space destinations and return to the vicinity of the Earth sometime later due to the direct influence of a third body perturbation. These trajectories can be designed to flyby the moon or near Earth asteroids and comets. The appealing characteristic of these trajectories is that they require a single injection maneuver at the Earth and no further translational control thereafter. A spacecraft on such a trajectory can take observations and measurements of the flyby body and download the data once it returns to …

Satellite Imaging Service Analysis Using Queueing Theory, Yan Mai, P.L. Palmer

Small Satellite Conference

Earth observation using small satellites is leaving demonstration status and being proposed for more and more commercial applications. By analysing such a service from both end-user and satellite operator point-of-view, it is hoped to provide the information such as service performance, on-board resource status and key parameters for system optimisation before the spacecraft is designed, launched and put into service. In this paper, queueing theory, traditionally used to perform tra_c and e_ciency analysis in tele-communication and other queueing system, is applied in this new area - a commercial imaging service using small satellites. The introduction of queueing theory in our …
