Observations Of Scent-Marking And Discriminating Self From Others By A Domestic Dog (Canis Familiaris): Tales Of Displaced Yellow Snow, Marc Bekoff Aug 2001

Observations Of Scent-Marking And Discriminating Self From Others By A Domestic Dog (Canis Familiaris): Tales Of Displaced Yellow Snow, Marc Bekoff

Ethology Collection

Little is known about what stimuli trigger urinating or scent-marking in domestic dogs, Canis familiaris, or their wild relatives. While it is often suggested that the urine of other animals influences urinating and scent-marking patterns in canids, this has not been verified experimentally. To investigate the role of urine in eliciting urinating and marking, in this pilot study I moved urine-saturated snow (‘yellow snow’) from place-to-place during five winters to compare the responses of an adult male domestic dog, Jethro, to his own and others’ urine. Jethro spent less time sniffing his own urine than that of other males or …

Status Of Chips: A Nasa University Explorer Astronomy Mission, Will Marchant, Mark Hurwitz, Michael Sholl, Ellen Riddle Taylor Aug 2001

Status Of Chips: A Nasa University Explorer Astronomy Mission, Will Marchant, Mark Hurwitz, Michael Sholl, Ellen Riddle Taylor

Small Satellite Conference

In the age of "Faster, Better, Cheaper", NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center has been looking for a way to implement university based science missions for significantly less money. The University Explorer (UNEX) program is the result. UNEX missions are designed for rapid turnaround with fixed budgets in the $10-$15 million US dollar range. The CHIPS project was selected in 1998. The CHIPS mission passed the Design Verification Review in April 2001 and is now proceeding into implementation with a launch in mid-2002. Many lessons have already been learned from the CHIPS UNEX project. The 2000 paper discussed the early issues …

Operational Experiences With The Petite Amateur Navy Satellite – Pansat, Ronald Phelps Aug 2001

Operational Experiences With The Petite Amateur Navy Satellite – Pansat, Ronald Phelps

Small Satellite Conference

This paper provides an overview of PANSAT’s on-orbit performance by discussing how the integration process, design decisions, and space environment have affected mission operations. PANSAT, in its third year of operation, is providing a large quantity of telemetry, some of which has been analyzed by officer students at the Naval Postgraduate School. Battery temperatures and charge cycles, EDAC errors as well as solar panel currents, are some of the telemetry data that were analyzed to gain insight about satellite performance.

Earth Observing-1 Spacecraft Bus, Mark Perry, Peter Alea, Michael Cully, Michael Mccullough, Paul Sanneman, Nicholas Teti, Bruce Zink Aug 2001

Earth Observing-1 Spacecraft Bus, Mark Perry, Peter Alea, Michael Cully, Michael Mccullough, Paul Sanneman, Nicholas Teti, Bruce Zink

Small Satellite Conference

The Earth Observing 1 (EO-1) spacecraft is one of the most trouble-free spacecraft that NASA has launched in the last ten years. A NASA New Millennium Program (NMP) mission dedicated to validating revolutionary technologies that will be used in future government and commercial missions, EO-1 was launched in November 2000 and flies in formation with Landsat 7. As the prime contractor, Swales Aerospace designed and built the spacecraft bus, integrated and tested the EO-1 observatory, and performed launch-site operations. Developed under the faster-better-cheaper philosophy, EO-1 is an example of a successful low-cost mission. We describe the mission, its new technologies, …

A Small Satellite As An Attached Payload On Iss—The Merger Of “Small” And “Very Large” , G.B. Murphy, T. Adams, Dale Ferguson Aug 2001

A Small Satellite As An Attached Payload On Iss—The Merger Of “Small” And “Very Large” , G.B. Murphy, T. Adams, Dale Ferguson

Small Satellite Conference

This paper describes the use of the Floating Potential Probe (FPP) as an “Attached Payload” on ISS. Background and motivation for building the FPP and well as detailed descriptions of its subsystems are described in another paper published in these proceedings (ref # SSC01-V-4b). With it’s solar arrays, primary/secondary power system, control/data processor unit, RF command/data link, thermal protection system, and two science instruments, the FPP displays most of the characteristics of a small spacecraft— with the exception of attitude control and propulsion subsystems. The FPP was attached to the top of the P6 truss during one of several Flight …

Multispectral Thermal Imager (Mti) Satellite Imaging Operations And Performance , Max Decker, R. Rex Kay, Glenn Rackley Aug 2001

Multispectral Thermal Imager (Mti) Satellite Imaging Operations And Performance , Max Decker, R. Rex Kay, Glenn Rackley

Small Satellite Conference

MTI is a comprehensive R&D project, featuring a single satellite in sun-synchronous orbit designed to collect radiometrically accurate images of instrumented ground sites in 15 spectral bands ranging from visible to long-wave infrared. The satellite was launched from Vandenberg Air Force Base on March 12, 2000 aboard an Orbital Sciences Corporation Taurus rocket. After launch, the operations team completed a 3-month turn-on, checkout and alignment procedure, and declared the satellite ready for its R&D mission on June 14, 2000. The satellite has collected over 1850 images in support of its research mission. This paper presents a brief satellite overview and …

In-Orbit Attitude Performance Of The 3-Axis Stabilised Snap-1 Nanosatellite , W.H. Steyn, Y. Hashida Aug 2001

In-Orbit Attitude Performance Of The 3-Axis Stabilised Snap-1 Nanosatellite , W.H. Steyn, Y. Hashida

Small Satellite Conference

SNAP-1 is the first 3-axis stabilised nanosatellite in orbit. The satellite is stabilised by a single Ymomentum wheel and 3-axis magnetorquer rods, used for nutation damping and wheel momentum management. The primary attitude sensor used for attitude and rate estimation, is a miniature 3-axis magnetometer. This paper will show the attitude performance results during pointing of the CMOS cameras. One of the challenges was how to handle a large residual magnetic moment disturbance on the satellite. This disturbance was caused by an unforseen permanent magnetisation dipole from the thruster solenoids, which could not be fully cancelled by the magnetorquer rods. …
