Does Study Abroad Make A Difference? An Impact Assessment Of The International 4-H Youth Exchange Program, Barry L. Boyd, Christie Giebler, Matthew Hince, Yaru Liu

Journal of Extension

The Texas Agricultural Extension Service 4-H program asked an undergraduate research team from the Eisenhower Leadership Program at Texas A&M University to assess the impact of participation in the International 4-H Youth Exchange (IFYE) program. The team surveyed all former IFYE participants from Texas, their family members, and friends. The findings indicate those surveyed were more sensitive to other cultures, more interested in global events, and more involved in community activities because of the exchange program. Participants described the exchange as a life-changing event. Participants also cited barriers to participation that can be overcome by seeking corporate support and by …

Pathways To A Better Trained Workforce, Gloria Kraft Oct 2001

Pathways To A Better Trained Workforce, Gloria Kraft

Journal of Extension

Changes in the economic and social climate have intensified pressures on the food industry. A significant factor is the lack of qualified workers and, at the same time, a lack of well-paid jobs and desirable careers. "Pathways to a Better Trained Workforce" is a 5-year project funded by the Mid-Atlantic Consortium through the W. K. Kellogg Foundation. The mission is to create a regional workforce development system that will provide a well-trained, reliable workforce for the food industry. The project is led by a team from Rutgers and Cornell Universities as a multi-state collaborative effort among educators, policy makers, and …

The Role Of The Adult Volunteer When Youth Turn To Them In Crisis, Stephen T. Russell Oct 2001

The Role Of The Adult Volunteer When Youth Turn To Them In Crisis, Stephen T. Russell

Journal of Extension

Volunteers who work with adolescents may be called upon when youth are in serious crisis. In supporting adult volunteers who work with youth, it is important for youth professionals to be mindful that the youth needs support from the volunteer and the volunteer needs support from the professional. Supporting the adult volunteer involves helping identify appropriate roles and actions. Situations in which youth face a health danger (pregnancy, drug use or abuse) or are keeping the crisis from their parent(s) are discussed. The volunteer must work with the youth to develop a plan for resolving the challenge that faces them.

A Simple, Robust, And On-Site Microwave Technique For Determining Water-To-Cement Ratio (W/C) Of Fresh Portland Cement-Based Materials, K. Mubarak, Karl Joseph Bois, R. Zoughi Oct 2001

A Simple, Robust, And On-Site Microwave Technique For Determining Water-To-Cement Ratio (W/C) Of Fresh Portland Cement-Based Materials, K. Mubarak, Karl Joseph Bois, R. Zoughi

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Inspection and evaluation of cement-based materials such as concrete is of great interest to the construction industry. In particular, real-time and on-site evaluation of water-to-cement ratio (w/c) is an important practical issue, since the compressive strength of a concrete structure is significantly influenced by its w/c. Currently, there is no single real-time, on-site, relatively in-expensive, easy-to-implement, and operator friendly technique for evaluating this parameter. Microwave nondestructive testing and evaluation techniques have shown great promise when used for inspection and evaluation of the properties of cement-based materials. In this paper, the optimal design of a monopole antenna probe used to evaluate …

The Decline And Fall Of Saint Mary's Of The Barrens: A Case Study In Contraction Of An American Catholic Religious Order - Part One, Richard J. Janet Ph.D. Oct 2001

The Decline And Fall Of Saint Mary's Of The Barrens: A Case Study In Contraction Of An American Catholic Religious Order - Part One, Richard J. Janet Ph.D.

Vincentian Studies

The closing of Saint Mary’s of the Barrens Seminary offers an example of the reaction of religious orders to the Second Vatican Council. In the United States especially, there was conflict between orders’ missions and their members’ individual identity as tied to specific works. Saint Mary’s Seminary formed hundreds of churchmen and provided a “unifying spirit” to apostolates. It closed due to declining enrollment and changes in the American church’s culture. When it did, Vincentians disagreed on what to do with apostolates. Details on the decision to close Saint Mary’s and the apostolates’ fate are provided from surveys and reports.

Scientific Ignorance And Reliable Patterns Of Evidence In Toxic Tort Causation: Is There A Need For Liability Reform?, Carl F. Cranor, David A. Eastmond Oct 2001

Scientific Ignorance And Reliable Patterns Of Evidence In Toxic Tort Causation: Is There A Need For Liability Reform?, Carl F. Cranor, David A. Eastmond

Law and Contemporary Problems

As a first step to preserving the central aims of tort law, courts will need to recognize the wide variety of respectable, reliable patterns of evidence on which scientists themselves rely for drawing inferences about the toxicity of substances. Courts may also need to take further steps to address the woeful ignorance about the chemical universe. This may necessitate changes in the liability rules.

Weed Plan For Western Australia, State Weed Plan Steering Group, Department Of Agriculture And Food, Western Australia Oct 2001

Weed Plan For Western Australia, State Weed Plan Steering Group, Department Of Agriculture And Food, Western Australia

Bulletins 4000 -

One of the most significant environmental challenges facing Western Australia is the minimisation of the impact of weeds. In the relatively short history of this State since European settlement, some 1155 exotic plant species have established as weeds in our diverse and generally fragile ecosystems. While development for agriculture, mining, transport and housing must by its nature result in some change to the State’s flora, the introduction of weedy plant species has caused serious impacts which cause great concern.

Weeds now pose a serious threat to many of the State’s ecosystems, and impose high annual costs on agricultural industries. Weeds …

The Role Of Lawyers In The World Trade Organization, Peter D. Ehrenhaft Oct 2001

The Role Of Lawyers In The World Trade Organization, Peter D. Ehrenhaft

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

The World Trade Organization is a marvelously ambitious effort of now 140 countries to bring the rule of law to international trade. The WTO is a logical extension of the inspired ideas of the draftsmen of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT), who recognized at the end of World War II that the seeds of that conflagration were sown, in part, by the chaotic condition of international trade following World War I.

During that inter-war period, the United States adopted its Antidumping Act of 1921 and its Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act of 1930. Both survive to this day. By …

He shows how programs emerged from the concept, the barriers to integration that they attempt to address, and their success. In Part II, he looks into the future of AC/RC integration, starting with an overview of transformation, then discussing transformation's impacts on the Reserve Components and their integration with the active force. Finally, he provides conclusions about the current and future state of …

2001 Presidential Address: Do More With More, Dawn O. Braithwaite Oct 2001

2001 Presidential Address: Do More With More, Dawn O. Braithwaite

Department of Communication Studies: Faculty Publications

As I have listened to, and recently reread the addresses of our WSCA Presidents, I have been moved and challenged by their words and their wisdom. And their speeches are challenging. They have exhorted us to embrace quality discourse, to welcome change, to maintain the centrality of communication in the university of the 21st century, and to avoid becoming out-of-touch whiners. I wondered, what can I add to their words in my own address?

Over this past year, I have thought about my life as a communication professor. How are my times similar and different from those who have come …

People Of The Scarred Coin, Thomas F. Mckenna C.M., S.T.D. Oct 2001

People Of The Scarred Coin, Thomas F. Mckenna C.M., S.T.D.

Vincentian Studies

In Vincent de Paul’s metaphor, persons who are poor are like badly scarred coins; they have their humanity on one side and Christ’s face on the other. We are to see God in them and that is “the basis of human dignity.” This also motivates Vincentian work in education. As Thomas McKenna writes, education “nourishes” dignity, both by teaching poor persons themselves and “by sensitizing everyone else to their dignity and worth.” McKenna emphasizes the need for Vincentian institutions to exercise transparency, or simplicity, as Vincent called it and explains transparency’s particular application to education.

Incarnational Spiritual Influences: Baptismal Covenant & The Life Styles / Stages Of Elizabeth Seton, Frances Ryan D.C.

Vincentian Studies

Elizabeth fulfilled many roles during her life: daughter and stepchild, wife, widow, convert, mother, and foundress. To each she brought her understanding of her baptismal covenant with God. This article explores each of Elizabeth’s roles, and how the combination of relationships and events led her to see God in others and understand God’s will for her life. This understanding of God that develops through life stages and events is a hallmark of Incarnational Spirituality. The culture that Elizabeth was born into, Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s influence on her ideas about education, and early life in the community of the Sisters of Charity …

Foreign Representatives In U.S. Chapter 11 Cases: Filling The Void In The Law Of Multinational Insolvencies, Evan D. Flaschen, Anthony J. Smits, Leo Plank

Connecticut Journal of International Law

In 1850, with forty dollars' and a lot of hard work, Isaac Merritt Singer created "America's greatest invention," a revolutionary design for the sewing machine. He founded the Singer Sewing Machine Company in 1851, and in 1867 opened a factory in Scotland, making Singer the first American multinational manufacturing company.

In 1999, with little more than forty dollars in the bank, The Singer Company N.V., the successor in interest to the Singer Sewing Machine Company, was again responsible for a new invention, this time in the field of international insolvency. Singer and forty-six of its affiliates (collectively, "Singer") filed Chapter …

The Social Meaning Of Environmental Command And Control, Michael P. Vandenbergh Oct 2001

The Social Meaning Of Environmental Command And Control, Michael P. Vandenbergh

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

...This essay draws on the new social norms literature to examine one of the possible reasons for the public misperceptions about the sources of the remaining environmental problems. The essay suggests that one of the insights of the social norms literature, the influence of social meaning on social norms, may shed light on these misperceptions and may enrich our understanding of the difficulties encountered by efforts to control second generation sources. In particular, this essay examines two principal social meanings that appear to have been conveyed by the command and control system. The first social meaning is the conventional notion …
