Multiple-Access Interference Suppression In Cdma Wireless Systems, Jianqiang He Jan 2001

Multiple-Access Interference Suppression In Cdma Wireless Systems, Jianqiang He

LSU Master's Theses

This thesis presents techniques that suppress the multiple access interference (MAI) in CDMA wireless systems. MAI is the main factor that influences the communication quality and the capacity in CDMA wireless systems. Hence the suppression of MAI is essential to the performance of a CDMA wireless system. For conventional CDMA systems where matched filters are used as receivers, the only MAI suppression method available is the power control, which allocates each user in the system an appropriate transmitter power level such that the transmitter power is minimized to decrease the MAI, while at the same time each user maintains a …

Assessing The Rate Of Change In The Enterprise Database System Market Over Time Using Dea, Timothy R. Anderson, Keith Hollingsworth, Lane Inman

Engineering and Technology Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

This paper builds upon previous work of using Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) to measure incremental innovation in technology by applying it to the Online Transaction Processing Market. A variable returns to scale DEA model is utilized to determine an annual rate of change in benchmarks based on data provided by the Transaction Processing Performance Council. This rate of change may then be used to forecast possible future performance trendsetters of the TPC.

A Space For Co-Constructing Counter Stories Under Surveillance, María Elena Torre, Michelle Fine, Kathy Boudin, Iris Bowen, Judith Clark, Donna Hylton, Migdalia Martinez, 'Missy', Rosemarie A. Roberts, Pamela Smart, Debora Upegui

Publications and Research

Using our experiences as members of a participatory action research committee (from the City University of New York Graduate Center and the Bedford Hills Correctional Facility) documenting the impact of college in a maximum security prison, this essay illustrates the power of Participatory Action Research in the construction of counter stories. We raise for discussion a set of theoretical, methodological and ethical challenges that emerged from the co-production of counter stories under surveillance: the creation of a critical space for producing 'counter knowledge'; the co-mingling of counter and dominant discourses, the negotiation of power over and within research in prison, …

Agrammatic Verb Errors In Spanish Speakers And Their Normal Discourse Correlates, Jose G. Centeno, Loraine Obler Jan 2001

Agrammatic Verb Errors In Spanish Speakers And Their Normal Discourse Correlates, Jose G. Centeno, Loraine Obler

Publications and Research

Agrammatic verb errors are characterized by a reliance on simple verb forms without elaborated inflectional markings. Yet agrammatism studies on verbs have not addressed the possible correlations that might exist between pre-morbid verb use patterns and agrammatic verb production, especially frequency in oral discourse. Spanish, a language with a highly inflected verb system, is a useful context to explore this interaction. This study investigated agrammatic and normal verb use for those Spanish verb tenses found in daily conversation (Silva-Corval/m, 1983; Bentivoglio and Sedano, 1992). We analyzed agrammatic verb performance in spoken discourse and a sentence repetition task, and compared it …

Attitudes At The Bank : A Survey Of Reactions To Different Varieties Of English, Sean Wilcox

Dissertations and Theses

In the modem world of international communication, it is more common for speakers of different varieties of English to come into contact with each other on a daily basis. This can occur not only in face to face communication, but in telephone communication as well.

This study investigates the attitudes towards a non-native or Expanding Circle (ECE) variety of English held by telephone customer service representatives at a large American financial institution. The central question of this study asks whether or not these telephone representatives will rate a speaker of a Korean-accented variety of English higher or lower than a …

Sharing Stories Of Teaching, Thomas Mcfarland Jan 2001

Sharing Stories Of Teaching, Thomas Mcfarland

Northwest Journal of Teacher Education

Teaching is what matters most for improving student learning in the new millennium. Unfortunately, the teaching profession needs heros and heroines-it is sadly in need of caring teachers who have the ability to influence the general public. If teachers and teacher educators are to be influencers or public leaders, then they must consider the constraints of the unschooled mind as shown in the writings of Howard Gardner. They must present their expertise so that their ideas influence parents, students, and community members-not just other professionals. All teachers must model caring in their classroom. A few teachers or teacher educators need …

Preparing Teachers For Educating Linguistically Diverse Students, Teresa Kennedy Jan 2001

Preparing Teachers For Educating Linguistically Diverse Students, Teresa Kennedy

Northwest Journal of Teacher Education

The nations resident population on Census Day, April 1, 2000, was 281,421,906- a 13.2 percent increase over the 248, 709,873 counted in the 1990 census. Since the ethnic profile of the United States is steadily increasing, the current drive for educational reform must strive to rethink and restructure schools to serve all students well. The intended modification of curriculum and instructional practices necessary to achieve this goal must focus on challenging and engaging all students while articulating programs across grade levels in a coherent, sequential manner. The teaching contexts are changing direction, and so, too, must teacher training and staff …

Philosophy In The Wilderness, Jamie P. Ross Jan 2001

Philosophy In The Wilderness, Jamie P. Ross

Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations

An analysis of the team-taught course, Knowledge, Art & Power: The Social Construction of Knowledge. It critically analyzes and rejects both of the following claims: 1. Knowledge consists of eternal truths, 2. Knowledge is relativistic. In so doing, we focus on an understanding that knowledge serves selective interests; knowledge has a teleology (purpose)- i.e. power.

In this course we examine and analyze the relationships among and between knowledge, power and art. That means we must first understand what counts as knowledge. One way of understanding what counts as knowledge is to understand the way in which power is defined …

Lying, Misleading, And Falsely Denying: How Moral Concepts Inform The Law Of Perjury, Fraud, And False Statements, Stuart P. Green

UC Law Journal

This Article seeks to describe the relationship between the criminal law and various concepts of deception. Deception is defined as the communication of a message that is intended to cause a person to believe something untrue. Three different kinds of deception are identified: (1) lying (deception that involves an assertion and is literally false); (2) non-lying deception, or mere "misleading" (deception that requires neither an assertion nor literal falsity); and (3) falsely denying (deception that occurs in the context of a person's denying some accusation of alleged wrongdoing). This Article argues that, other things being equal, non-lying deception tends to …

Attribute Agenda-Setting In An Open Primary: An Examination Of Press Coverage And Political Ad Effects, Scott Hobbs Jan 2001

Attribute Agenda-Setting In An Open Primary: An Examination Of Press Coverage And Political Ad Effects, Scott Hobbs

LSU Master's Theses

Creating a favorable candidate image is one of the more difficult tasks a political consultant faces. Besides researching which issues their client will address, the consultant must analyze what attributes voters find most appealing in a candidate. Then, through a complex process, a candidate image is finally packaged and presented to the public. This thesis looks at the end result of the packaging process for a Mayoral candidate in East Baton Rouge parish. By examining the press coverage and campaign ads in a local election in a mid-size city, this study expands on previous second level agenda-setting research. Literature in …

The Role Of Experience And Active Learning In Web-Based Training For Applying Knowledge, Deborah L. Dunaway Jan 2001

The Role Of Experience And Active Learning In Web-Based Training For Applying Knowledge, Deborah L. Dunaway

The purpose of this study was to test a new method for presenting information on the internet in a format that enhances adaptive learning and transfer to real-world applications. This web-based training method, called Cognitive Toolboxes (Mathews, 2001) involves analyzing course content into goal-based categories (toolboxes) linked to sets of knowledge facets (tools) and applications (cases). Three experiments examined the effects of internet access to different aspects of toolbox content (tools, toolbox names and cases) on subsequent application of the material to real-world problems. Results show that access to the organizational aspects of the method (tools organized into toolboxes) facilitated …

Healing The Whole Person: A Post Occupancy Evaluation Of The Rooftop Therapy Park At Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center, Knoxville, Tennessee, Brad Edward Davis

LSU Master's Theses

This study used a post occupancy evaluation to assess the impact of an existing hospital garden on its users. Previous studies of hospital gardens have been of passive garden use. This study addressed gardens including physical therapy, while also considering the emotional, spiritual, and social aspects. The POE included behavioral observation, interviews with the designer and lead therapist, a staff survey, and a patient questionnaire. In light of historical information and contemporary theory, the results revealed issues to be addressed in the design process of future healing gardens, specifically those including physical therapy. The major issues included: the need for …

Erps And Strategy: First, Do No Harm, Kristi Jane Yuthas, Catherine Banbury, Darrell Brown

Business Faculty Publications and Presentations

ERP and other systems projects are now commonly preceded or accompanied by reengineering efforts. Traditional reengineering projects use a 'clean sheet' approach, in which companies attempt to design ideal processes without being bound to existing processes and constraints. When reengineering is associated with information technology (IT) implementation, the more common approach is known as 'tool-driven' or 'system-enhanced' reengineering. Under this approach, the new processes are designed with explicit attention to the opportunities and constraints presented by the capabilities of the new information system. Although IT-related reengineering approaches have matured through time, they have not kept pace with current perspectives on …

"Of One Kind Or Another": Rape In The Fiction Of Eudora Welty, Nicole M. Donald Jan 2001

"Of One Kind Or Another": Rape In The Fiction Of Eudora Welty, Nicole M. Donald

LSU Master's Theses

"Of One Kind or Another:" Rape in the Fiction of Eudora Welty explores the ways in which Eudora Welty's repeated inclusion of rape in her fiction reveals and questions southern society and women's roles in it. Despite the vague, even confusing language with which she describes the incidents of rape. Welty offers a rich, forceful commentary upon the culture and women's roles in it. The ambiguity with which she describes rape reveals ambivalence toward the society that Welty may be said at once to protect and to expose. An examination of Welty's use of rape in her fiction reveals a …

"Encourager Le Commerce Et Répandre Les LumiʹEre" : The Press, The Provinces And The Origins Of The Revolution In France: 1750-1789, Stephen Auerbach

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation examines the political, intellectual, and cultural significance of France's provincial newspaper press, called affiches, published between 1750-1789. Combining the histories of the press, provincial life, and the public sphere, this dissertation explores the ways in which the affiches became an indispensable part of local economic, cultural, and intellectual life while at the same time articulated a world view that was antithetical to the tenets of monarchical absolutism. The first part of the dissertation focuses on the origins, form and contents of the provincial press. Faced with the twin obstacles of laws governing censorship and privilege, provincial newspapers eschewed …

The Uncertain Future Of Fair Use In A Global Information Marketplace, Marshall Leaffer Jan 2001

The Uncertain Future Of Fair Use In A Global Information Marketplace, Marshall Leaffer

Articles by Maurer Faculty

The author of this article forecasts an increasingly troubled future, if not the demise of the doctrine of fair use in copyright law. Legal developments, both at home and abroad, driven by technological change, and the push toward the international harmonization of legal norms, threaten the very survival of fair use. Given these realities the doctrine will, of necessity, be reconceptualized Although fair use values will always be inscribed in copyright law, these values will have their practical manifestation in decentralized form, and effectuated, in large part, through industry agreement. They will exist in conjunction with certain bright line exceptions …

Adolescents And Sport : A Case Study Of Boys' Drop-Out From Basketball, P. N. A. Jelovsek

Theses : Honours

This thesis was designed to acquire comprehensible awareness of specific drop-out cases from basketball, specifically adolescent boys between the ages of twelve and fifteen, at Cockburn Basketball Stadium and hence abate the incidence of adolescent drop-out. My intention was to uncover what happened to these adolescents and what led them to decide to stop playing basketball. I also wished to ascertain what meaning these adolescents ascribed to the events that occurred whilst playing which led them to decide to stop playing. The Cockburn Basketball Association had 190-plus junior teams in semester 1, 1996 and only 86 junior teams in semester …
