Management In The Financial Services : Emotional Labour And Gender, Sarah Watson Jan 2001

Management In The Financial Services : Emotional Labour And Gender, Sarah Watson

School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences Theses

This thesis examines the development of management in financial services and its implications on managers' activities and socialisation. The thesis uses gender and emotional labour as the main themes for the discussion of management in the financial services. The thesis reports on two ethnographic case studies within two UK retail banks. Analyses are based on data derived from interviews, observations and documents. Both the literature and data suggest that management in the service sector centres around the management of organisational cultures. Managers must disseminate the organisational values in order to extract excellent customer service from the front-line staff. Managers themselves …

The Relationship Between Interorganizational Collaboration And The Perception Of School-Business Partnership Effectiveness In West Virginia., Julie Marie Norman Jan 2001

The Relationship Between Interorganizational Collaboration And The Perception Of School-Business Partnership Effectiveness In West Virginia., Julie Marie Norman

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

School-business partnerships have proliferated in response to public outcry for education reform, yet little evidence exists to support that these collaborations are effective. The purpose of this study is to determine if a significant relationship exists between the factors influencing collaboration and school-business partnership effectiveness in West Virginia. This investigation was accomplished through survey research procedures using a questionnaire developed by the researcher upon careful review of the literature. Quantitative research was conducted on the perceptions of public school principals in West Virginia with regard to their school-business partnerships' effectiveness and the existence of environmental, organizational, and group interaction factors …

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder: Families Choosing Alternate Management Approaches., Christina Mary Lavorata Jan 2001

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder: Families Choosing Alternate Management Approaches., Christina Mary Lavorata

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder affects approximately two million American school children by making them distractible and impulsive, and by causing them to have a short attention span in both scholastic and social situations. These characteristics generally result in the students receiving poor marks in academic subjects, being reprimanded frequently, and being labeled as disruptive and difficult to control by both their parents and teachers. Pediatricians and psychiatrists most often prescribe psychostimulant medications to control the syndrome, and this is an effective treatment in sixty to seventy percent of cases. There are questions about the safety of long-term use of medication, …

Animal, Dairy, and Veterinary Science Faculty Publications

Despite intense efforts to increase vaccine coverage, measles virus (MV) still causes significant morbidity and mortality in the world, sometimes as the result of severe, chronic, lethal disease. In an effort to develop therapies to supplement immunization strategies, a number of 5′-nor carbocyclic adenosine analogues were evaluated for anti-MV activity in CV-1 monkey kidney cells. Of those compounds tested, those either unsubstituted at C4 or possessing a hydroxyl, azido or amino substituent at that position were the most active, with particularly significant inhibition of MV, strain Chicago-1. The EC50 values against this strain ranged from100 mg/ml in actively growing and …

Of Courts And Closets: A Doctrinal And Empirical Analysis Of Lesbian And Gay Identity In The Courts, Todd Brower Jan 2001

Of Courts And Closets: A Doctrinal And Empirical Analysis Of Lesbian And Gay Identity In The Courts, Todd Brower

San Diego Law Review

The decision4 to acknowledge one's sexual orientation-to "come out'5 in common parlance-exposes gay people to a variety of responses from acceptance, to ridicule,6 to loss of contracts or other means to earn a living, to termination of employment or other benefits.8 Nevertheless, it is an essential step toward lesbian and gay persons' full and equal participation in American society. Legal rules can help or hinder this process; current doctrine, unfortunately, does both.

Honey Amylase And The Effect In Starch-Containing Foods, Sibel Babacan Jan 2001

Honey Amylase And The Effect In Starch-Containing Foods, Sibel Babacan

Open Access Dissertations

Honey amylase was evaluated for potential to degrade food starch and cause viscosity loss. Honey was assayed for amylase activity with diastase number (DN). A viscosity assay, developed with unmodified waxy maize starch, measured rate of viscosity decrease (RVD) by honey amylase. The relationship between DN and RVD was linear (R2 = 0.98). Modified waxy maize starches showed resistance to honey amylase. Heat treatment at 85 °C reduced the amylase activity in honey, but confirmed enzyme heat resistance. Optimum pH for honey amylase was confirmed at pH 5.3-5.6. Lower pH was effective at decreasing enzyme activity in both pure starch …

Assessing Depression Treatment And Outcomes Using Insurance Claims Data, Gregory Andrew Allard Jan 2001

Assessing Depression Treatment And Outcomes Using Insurance Claims Data, Gregory Andrew Allard

Open Access Dissertations

This retrospective, longitudinal, quasi-experimental study uses insurance data to compare long-term outcomes among an adult population by depression history and treatment level. Treatment levels were assigned based on claims history correspondence with Agency for Health Care Policy and Research (AHCPR) depression outpatient treatment guidelines. Thirty-month outcomes included depression resurgence and total health care utilization (total utilization). Recurrent depressives (recurrents) were expected to experience resurgence at higher rates than single episode depressives (singles). Additionally, cases with AHCPR-recommended (preventative) treatments were expected to have lower resurgence rates compared to cases that received lower-level treatments. Also, total utilization in cases receiving preventative treatments …

Piety And Intolerance: A Rhetorical Inquiry Into The Constituting Of Christian Fundamentalist Identity, Mary K. Cardinale Jan 2001

Piety And Intolerance: A Rhetorical Inquiry Into The Constituting Of Christian Fundamentalist Identity, Mary K. Cardinale

Open Access Dissertations

"Piety and Intolerance: A Rhetorical Inquiry Into the Constituting of Christian Fundamentalist Identity" explores the connection between fundamentalist texts and the promotion of prejudice--prejudice defined as intolerance, discrimination, and "negative intergroup attitude[s]" toward outsiders. Studies suggest a relationship between religious fundamentalism and prejudice; however, no study has found conclusively what links them. In response, this study analyzes and interprets passages from two fundamentalist texts in order to locate link/s between the texts' rhetorical elements and their effects on constituting an exclusive fundamentalist identity that positions outsiders as God's enemies. I argue that epideictic rhetoric and the enthymeme, employed as a …

Traces Of Enlightenment: Eighteenth-Century Travel Writing And The Reproduction Of Knowledge(S), Richard Kenneth Van Dyke Jan 2001

Traces Of Enlightenment: Eighteenth-Century Travel Writing And The Reproduction Of Knowledge(S), Richard Kenneth Van Dyke

Open Access Dissertations

Through analysis of eighteenth-century travel writing and eighteenth-century attempts to discover a reliable metaphysical knowledge, this study reveals foundational instability in the European Enlightenment knowledge project and thus makes a call for a more nuanced approach to eighteenth-century textuality than late twentieth-century discourse theorists usually allow. Discourse theorists often construct an enlightenment defined exclusively by progressive endpoints of social order, narrative control, and epistemological fixity, which lead to practices of domination over self-determined Others. Yet, through a focus on the metaphysical inquiries of George Berkeley and David Hume, a different picture of the eighteenth-century knowledge project emerges. For Berkeley and …

Study Of Particle Deposition In Human Airway Models, Guosen Yue Jan 2001

Study Of Particle Deposition In Human Airway Models, Guosen Yue

Open Access Dissertations

In this dissertation, the deposition of particles in human airway models is studied. The dissertation consists of three parts: In the first part, an analytical model of particle nasal airway deposition by diffusion considering effects of both laminar and turbulent flows is proposed. It appears in the literature that neither laminar nor turbulent analytical models alone works well for the entire range of diffusion parameters. A simplified turbulent particle diffusion equation is first developed and then a new combined turbulent/laminar diffusion model is proposed. The results predicted from the new model show improved accuracy when compared with available experimental data …

Examining The Structural And Philosophical Positions Of Community-Based Organization Practitioners, Dana Scott Mills Jan 2001

Examining The Structural And Philosophical Positions Of Community-Based Organization Practitioners, Dana Scott Mills

Open Access Dissertations

Research examining the gap between science and practice in community health promotion often acknowledges the relevance of differing philosophies between science and practice populations and their relative influence on technology transfer. However, few studies have examined the nature of the philosophical differences on the adoption of science-based health promotion and prevention program adoption. This dissertation explored the paradigmatic views and philosophical orientations of community-based prevention providers with a focus on how paradigm differences between researchers and practitioners sustain gaps and block the transfer of technology (a.k.a., diffusion of innovations, utilization of research findings, adopting science-based programs) in community health promotion …

Sexual Negotiation And The Influence Of Gender And Power In Heterosexually Active Men And Women, Seth Michael Noar

Open Access Dissertations

This study had four main goals: (1) to develop a psychometrically valid condom influence strategy scale (CISS) on a college sample; (2) to examine the relationship of these influence strategies to variables from HIV risk reduction models; (3) to further validate this scale in a sample of at-risk community adults; and (4) to discuss how gender, power, and interpersonal variables such as influence strategies can be integrated into current models of HIV risk reduction. In Study One, a sample of 471 sexually active college students was split in two for exploratory (N = 201) and confirmatory (N = 270) analyses. …

Synthesis Of Conducting Polymer Complexes, Patrick Allen Mccarthy Jan 2001

Synthesis Of Conducting Polymer Complexes, Patrick Allen Mccarthy

Open Access Dissertations

Conducting polymers are notorious for being difficult to process. Here, we describe syntheses, purification, and characterization of water-soluble double-stranded complexes containing conducting polymers. We describe the synthesis of a water-soluble double-stranded complex containing chiral polyaniline and poly (acrylic acid). We also describe the synthesis of a water-soluble double-stranded complex containing polypyrrole and poly (acrylic acid). Finally, we describe the synthesis of a water-soluble double-stranded complex containing polypyrrole and poly (acrylic acid) with an unusually high polypyrrole loading.

Indium Tin Oxide Thin Film Strain Gages For Use At Elevated Temperatures, Qing Luo Jan 2001

Indium Tin Oxide Thin Film Strain Gages For Use At Elevated Temperatures, Qing Luo

Open Access Dissertations

A robust ceramic thin film strain gage based on indium-tin-oxide (ITO) has been developed for static and dynamic strain measurements in advanced propulsion systems at temperatures up to 1400°C. These thin film sensors are ideally suited for in-situ strain measurement in harsh environments such as those encountered in the hot sections of gas turbine engines. A novel self-compensation scheme was developed using thin film platinum resistors placed in series with the active strain element (ITO) to minimize the thermal effect of strain or apparent strain. A mathematical model as well as design rules were developed for the self-compensated circuitry using …

Using Jpeg2000 Compressed Images For Foveated Texture Mapping In Limited Memory Environments, Timothy Michael Henry Jan 2001

Using Jpeg2000 Compressed Images For Foveated Texture Mapping In Limited Memory Environments, Timothy Michael Henry

Open Access Dissertations

Despite advances in hardware technology and software rendering algorithms, there remain several limitations that force design trade-offs in virtual environments and visualization systems, such as the decision between increased level of detail, scene rendering time and the storage size of an object or virtual world. If an application involves the Internet or another restricted bandwidth transmission environment, the amount of data necessary to communicate a high level of detail becomes an even more critical parameter. Texture mapping and light mapping are used to increase the realism of a scene without increasing the geometric complexity. The cost for these methods is …

An Exploration Of Critical Thinking And Processing In Cardiac Nurses' Practice, Nancy Phoenix Bittner Jan 2001

An Exploration Of Critical Thinking And Processing In Cardiac Nurses' Practice, Nancy Phoenix Bittner

Open Access Dissertations

The need and demand for critical thinking in cardiac nursing and practice in general is well documented in the nursing literature. However, little attention has been given to solidifying a definition or describing critical thinking as it occurs in practice. In an initial fieldwork project of one experienced nurse in a cardiac rehabilitation setting, an eight-phase process (reference point, congruency check, active questioning, additional gathering, cueing congruency, weighing and selection, action and follow-up/self-evaluation) was identified. It involved both mental and behavioral activities and prompted the renaming of critical thinking to critical processing, as a more encompassing label. The aim of …

Leading The Assembly Is Pastoral, Virgil C. Funk Jan 2001

Leading The Assembly Is Pastoral, Virgil C. Funk

Institute of Liturgical Studies Occasional Papers

(Excerpt)

I should begin, I think, by explaining a bit about what I mean by "pastoral" when we speak about leading the assembly. We got a phone call once at the National Association of Pastoral Musicians from a scholar who was researching the folk music of Greek shepherds, and he thought that we might be of some help, since we are also interested in things "pastoral." That isn't the "pastoral" that I have in mind! Instead, my vision of pastoral leadership is rooted in the story at the end of John's gospel where Jesus asks Peter three times, "Simon, son …

Movin' On Up To The 21st Century: Multiculturalism… Making The Abstract Applied, Vonda Dionne Jones-Hudson

Open Access Dissertations

The following evaluative study looks at a psychology department's organizational development and change process. Using the Multicultural Environment Inventory (MEI) (Pope-Davis & Liu, 1995), the Departmental Cross Reference to the MEI (DCR-MEI) (Jones-Hudson, 1997), and a short version of the Marlowe-Crowne Social Desirability Scale (Reynolds, 1982), this research assessed the psychometric properties of the surveys and the effects of the 3-year intervention designed to assist the University of Rhode Island's Psychology Department in its journey towards multicultural proficiency. Using information from an initial consult in 1995, data was collected in 1998 to measure change specific to the environment and curricula …
