In-Prison Day Care: A Correctional Alternative For Women Offenders, Jessica Y. Kim Jan 2001

In-Prison Day Care: A Correctional Alternative For Women Offenders, Jessica Y. Kim

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The note argues that traditional incarceration of mothers can have detrimental effects on both the women and their children, advocating for alternative correctional methods such as in-prison day care programs. These alternatives aim to maintain the mother-child bond, reduce recidivism, and mitigate the negative societal impacts of separating mothers from their children.

Malcolm Maclean, Jr.: Ahead Of His Time And Ahead Of Our Time, Will Norton Jan 2001

Malcolm Maclean, Jr.: Ahead Of His Time And Ahead Of Our Time, Will Norton

College of Journalism and Mass Communications: Faculty Publications

In a recent essay Stephen Reese (1999, 70), chair of the Department of Journalism at the University of Texas, assessed the media today and analyzed the condition of journalism education and concluded that foundations and media corporations are having more influence on journalism programs than at any time in the history of journalism education. As I read the essay by Reese, I noted many observations that Malcolm MacLean made three decades ago, but nowhere was MacLean cited. In fact, I do not believe Reese could have described the influence of media as a new problem if he had known about …

Soil Property Changes During Conversion From Perennial Vegetation To Annual Cropping, Brian J. Wienhold, Donald L. Tanaka Jan 2001

Soil Property Changes During Conversion From Perennial Vegetation To Annual Cropping, Brian J. Wienhold, Donald L. Tanaka

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Management practices for conversion of land supporting perennial vegetation to crop production are needed. Effect of haying (hayed or not hayed), cropping (annual crop with no-tillage, minimum tillage, or conventional tillage, and no-tilled perennial crop), and N fertilization (0 or 67 kg ha-1) on soil properties were measured in 1995 and 1997 at a Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) site in North Dakota having an Amor loam (Fine-loamy, mixed, superactive, frigid, Typic Haplustoll) soil in a spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), winter wheat, pea (Pisum sativum L.) rotation. Soil physical properties were not affected negatively by the …

Oxidative Metabolism In Plant/Bacteria Interactions: Characterization Of A Unique Oxygen Uptake Response Of Potato Suspension Cells, C. Jacyn Baker, E. W. Orlandi, Kenneth L. Deahl Jan 2001

Oxidative Metabolism In Plant/Bacteria Interactions: Characterization Of A Unique Oxygen Uptake Response Of Potato Suspension Cells, C. Jacyn Baker, E. W. Orlandi, Kenneth L. Deahl

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Plant suspension cells have been shown to respond to bacteria or microbial elicitors by producing active oxygen as well as increasing oxygen uptake. Here we characterize a unique two stage oxygen uptake response of potato suspension cells to heat-killed bacteria. Stage 1 occurred within minutes after the addition of heat-killed bacteria; the potato suspension cells responded with a rapid increase in oxygen uptake and reached a steady state approximately 50 % greater than the initial basal rate. Stage 2 began 20-30 min after this new steady state was achieved and was characterized by a slow increase in the oxygen uptake …

The Call Of The Sirens: The Women Who Support The Fremantle Dockers, Fiona Irvine Jan 2001

The Call Of The Sirens: The Women Who Support The Fremantle Dockers, Fiona Irvine

Theses : Honours

Australian Football and sport in general is a large part of the Australian culture. In the past men have dominated most aspects of sport as participants, spectators and administrators. Women have fulfilled a submissive role supporting men's sporting pursuits. However, the role of women is more significant and football clubs are recognising the importance of this membership segment by creating clubs within clubs to cater for the needs of female members. This study examined the reasons why women enjoy watching men's sport and if there are specific reasons why they joined a women-only supporter club of a male sport. A …

An Evaluation Of A Web-Based Tool To Assist Transition To University, Jack Seddon

Theses : Honours

This study sought to evaluate the user experience of the Race Around ECU (NAHCU) Web site (Seddon. Grant, Kosh, White & Hunt, 2000) http://www.ecu.edu.au/pa/raecu, in an attempt to understand the extent that a web-based solution can enhance high school students prior knowledge of the issues that students encounter during transition to university and how effective the site is in raising their aspirations to attend university. It sought to determine the extent to which the provision of Web promoted engagement and to explore the extent to which teaching strategies that support the integration of Web site use within existing class structures …

Application Of Orthogonal Polynomials To Geostatistics, Ainslie Chapman Jan 2001

Application Of Orthogonal Polynomials To Geostatistics, Ainslie Chapman

Theses : Honours

Geostatistics is a field of study that deals with spatially dependent attributes. As information regarding these attributes is usually only available at sample locations, estimates must be made at unsampled locations. Sample data are usually measured on point support within the study region, however in reality decisions are based on small blocks and not on points. A change-of-support model is required to obtain the theoretical distribution of block values given the sample point values. Estimates arc then made for a collection of blocks, referred to as a panel. Kriging is a generic term adopted by geostatisticians for a family of …

Hpe Teachers' Collection Of Information On Student Physical Activity Levels, S. A. Tonkin Jan 2001

Hpe Teachers' Collection Of Information On Student Physical Activity Levels, S. A. Tonkin

Theses : Honours

This exploratory study sought to identify whether Health and Physical Education (HPE) Heads of Department (HODs) used a process of reflection to identify students' physical activity levels in compulsory general HPE (years 8-1 0) at secondary schools in the northern metropolitan suburbs of Perth. This study used a questionnaire, administered by research assistants, to learn what teachers believe students should be taught about physical activity. It utilised the Pollard & Tann (1993) reflective teaching process to determine if teachers collected written information on students' physical activity levels. It asked whether they analysed, evaluated, reflected, planed, made provision and acted on …

The Psychosocial Well-Being Of Children From Fly-In/Fly-Out Mining Families, Anne Margaret Sibbel Jan 2001

The Psychosocial Well-Being Of Children From Fly-In/Fly-Out Mining Families, Anne Margaret Sibbel

Theses : Honours

The children of fly-in/fly-out (FIFO) mining employees are exposed to the risk factors for depressive disorders of regular father absence associated with hazardous employment conditions, together with disruptions to family routines. In the absence of previous research in this area, this exploratory study sought to determine whether the levels of depressive symptomatology, anxiety and perceptions of family function of 30 primary school-aged children whose fathers were in FIFO employment were less healthy than those of a Control Group of 30 children whose fathers did not have FIFO employment. The mothers' perceptions of family function were also compared. The children were …

The Effectiveness Of Pre-Interview Training In Helping Preschool Children Overcome Compliance In An Interview Setting, Jo-Anne Naylor Jan 2001

The Effectiveness Of Pre-Interview Training In Helping Preschool Children Overcome Compliance In An Interview Setting, Jo-Anne Naylor

Theses : Honours

The purpose of the present study was to investigate whether a pre-interview training package was effective in reducing compliance to misleading questions with pre-school children and if the effects of the pre-interview training package could be generalized to interviewers other than those conducting the pre-interview training. Sixty preschool children, aged between four and five years, were randomly allocated to one of three interview conditions. The first group was given no pre-interview training (control group). In the second group, the same person administered the pre-interview training package and subsequent interview (same interviewer group). In the third group, different people conducted the …

Substitution De Solvants : Étude De Cas D'Implantation, Denis Bégin, Michel Gérin Jan 2001

Substitution De Solvants : Étude De Cas D'Implantation, Denis Bégin, Michel Gérin

Rapports de recherche scientifique

Introduction

Editorial, Ron Jordahl

The Christian Librarian

Forget the hoopla of New Years Day 2000; we know that January 1, 2001 actually marks the beginning of the 21" century. That fact notwithstanding, in this first issue of The Christian Librarian for the new millennium you will find a "business as usual" attitude. Perhaps that is because not all of the TCL team members share my mathematical insistence this is really the first month of the new millennium, but more likely it is because my colleagues are more concerned about the realities of Christian librarianship in the real world than they are in sophomoric niceties.

"Public Citizens" And The Constitution: Bridging The Gap Between Popular Sovereignty And Original Intent, Robert W. Scheef

Fordham Law Review

I sincerely congratulate the citizens of America upon the fair prospect which now presents itself to their view; and promises a long reign of virtue, happiness, and glory, as the result of a constitution which is the real vox populi so often ardently desired by mankind, in vain, for the first time, discovered by the patriotic sages of America.
