The Speed Of Money: Investment As Consumption In Age Of Computer-Mediated Communication, Detlev Zwick Jan 2001

The Speed Of Money: Investment As Consumption In Age Of Computer-Mediated Communication, Detlev Zwick

Open Access Dissertations

Using the tools of interpretive consumer research my dissertation explores individual online investing in stocks and mutual funds. Investing in the stock market means more to the individual than the pursuit of a rational financial strategy. Approaches to study investment behavior developed by disciplines such as finance and economics have produced subject-specific but from a marketing perspective empty knowledge. An analysis informed by marketing and consumer theories is able to construe investing as consuming and bring into being a richer and more contextualized description of the lived experience of online investing. Based on a hermeneutic reading of 30 in-depth one-on-one …

Genealogy Of A State-Engineered “Model Minority”: “Not Quite/Not White” South Asian Americans, Tayyab Mahmud Jan 2001

Genealogy Of A State-Engineered “Model Minority”: “Not Quite/Not White” South Asian Americans, Tayyab Mahmud

Faculty Articles

This is review essay based on Vijay Prashad, The Karma of Brown Folk (Minneapolis: University of Minnesota Press 2000). It engages the saga of immigration of South Asian to the United States. A primary focus is on the matrix of identity formation within the grammar of imperialism. It explores how modern regimes of power/knowledge constitute racialized subjects. The deployment of the "model minority" discourse is examined as it relates to South Asian Americans. Structures of power and strategies of resistance among South Asian Americans are highlighted and it is argued that building solidarities among all subordinated is the only viable …

Privacy And Power, Rosa Brooks Jan 2001

Privacy And Power, Rosa Brooks

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

Something has gone wrong in modem America, argues Jeffrey Rosen in The Unwanted Gaze. Our medical records are bought and sold by health care providers, drug companies, and the insurance industry. Our e-mails are intercepted and read by our employers. Amazon.com knows everything there is to know about our reading and web-browsing habits. Poor Monica Lewinsky's draft love letters to President Bill Clinton were seized by the villainous Ken Starr, and ultimately plastered all over the nation's newspapers.

To Rosen, the nature of the problem is clear: These examples are all part of a troubling "phenomenon that affects all …

Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios

The purpose of this phenomenological study was to assess the attitudes, perceptions, behaviors, and responses of teachers with varying computer skills after exposure to the Technology Learning Model (TLM), as well as to assess the overall impact of the staff development experiences. The TLM was comprised of a researcher-designed, 10-session, 15- hour training implementation over 8 weeks. The two research questions of the study were: How will participants with varying computer skill levels respond to the TLM? How does the TLM affect participants' attitudes toward integration of computer technology into professional responsibilities?

The purposeful sample was drawn from teachers at …

Review of The Common Place of Law: Stories From Everyday Life by Patricia Ewick & Susan S. Silbey (1998).

Sometimes a work's intellectual influences reveal both its strengths and its shortcomings. This is certainly the case with Patricia Ewick and Susan Silbey's The Common Place of Law: Stories From Everyday Life, and its indebtedness to the thinking of Michel Foucault and Michel de Certeau. Taken together, Foucault and de Certeau's work suggests that investigations of law's power are most fruitful not at the level of legal institutions and the state but at the level of lived experience, where we …

Resistance Theory And The Transculturation Hypothesis As Explanations Of College Attrition And Persistence Among Culturally Traditional American Indian Students, Terry Huffman Jan 2001

Resistance Theory And The Transculturation Hypothesis As Explanations Of College Attrition And Persistence Among Culturally Traditional American Indian Students, Terry Huffman

Faculty Publications - College of Education

This paper reports the findings of a qualitative research investigation on the educational experiences of 69 American Indian college students. Specifically, the data involving two groups of culturally traditional students (estranged students and transcultural students) are considered. Estranged students are culturally traditional American Indian students who experienced intense alienation while in college and, subsequently, fared poorly academically. Conversely, transculturated students are also culturally traditional students. However, these students overcame acute alienation and generally experienced successful college careers. After an examination of the dominant theoretical perspectives on American Indian educational achievement and attrition, the findings of the research are extended to …

From Pronatalism To Social Welfare? Extending Family Allowances To Minority Populations In France And Israel, Leslie King Jan 2001

From Pronatalism To Social Welfare? Extending Family Allowances To Minority Populations In France And Israel, Leslie King

Sociology: Faculty Publications

An inherent tension exists between the goals of pronatalism and the actual policies through which law makers have often attempted to raise birth rates. Proponents of pronatalism often prefer to raise births only to specific racial/ethnic or national groups; yet in modern democracies, it is unacceptable for social policies to explicitly discriminate on the basis of race, ethnicity, or national origin. Social benefits, such as family allowances, must be accessible to all citizens. The recent extension of certain previously denied family benefits to minority populations in France and Israel illustrates this tension and points to a future direction in which …

Betraying Women In The Name Of Revolution: Violence Against Women As An Obstacle To Democratic Nation-Building In South Africa, Suzanne A. Kim Jan 2001

Betraying Women In The Name Of Revolution: Violence Against Women As An Obstacle To Democratic Nation-Building In South Africa, Suzanne A. Kim

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The article examines the contradiction between the formal legal advancements in gender equality and the persistent epidemic of violence against women in post-apartheid South Africa. Despite the African National Congress' (ANC) commitment to gender equality and the inclusion of women in political processes, the reality of widespread violence against women undermines the nation's democratic ideals and highlights the failure to address gender concerns within the broader nationalist agenda.

Cultural Predictors Of Asian/Pacific Islander Women’S Hiv/Aids Protective Behaviors, Jennifer C. Huang Jan 2001

Cultural Predictors Of Asian/Pacific Islander Women’S Hiv/Aids Protective Behaviors, Jennifer C. Huang

Open Access Master's Theses

Understanding the HIV/AIDS risk behaviors among heterosexual Asian/Pacific Islander (API) women requires an examination of the circumstances which place heterosexual women at risk of AIDS, as well as the cultural factors which affect API sexuality. Research has been conducted on samples of women, one of the fastest growing populations to be infected with HIV/AIDS, as well as API populations, who are susceptible to HIV infection as any other ethnic group. There is, however, a paucity of research concerning the sexuality of API women. Previous research regarding HIV/AIDS risk factors for women may not be culturally sensitive. Additionally, research pertaining to …
